Environment Minister Stephane Dion told Alberta francophones a Liberal government is their best hope for protecting their language rights.

During a swing through Edmonton, Dion urged Alberta voters to send strong Liberal representation to Ottawa.

"We need strong Alberta forces in the Liberal government," he said. "A strong Alberta is key to a strong Canada and we want to have a strong Alberta at the cabinet table the day after the election."

Speaking to about 100 members of the Edmonton Francophone community, he promised to pursue federal financial assistance for a francophone medical centre and expansion of La Cite francophone, an educational and social centre.

Accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Anne McLellan, he toured the Edmonton waste-treatment plant and dropped in on several Liberal campaign headquarters.

He was the first cabinet minister from outside Alberta to visit Edmonton during the campaign.

McLellan, the lone Liberal MP in Alberta, is again in a close race in her Edmonton Centre riding. She is running against retired jetfighter pilot Laurie Hawn, who lost to her in 2004 by about 700 votes.

Dion also made a swing through Edmonton-Beaumont, held by former Liberal David Kilgour. Kilgour left the Liberals to sit as an Independent over the party’s stand on same-sex marriage. He isn’t running again.

The Liberals are running Armajit Grewal in the largely ethnic riding.
