Whole country benefits from our petro-boom, Stelmach says

EDMONTON - Alberta's economic power is not a threat but a multibillion-dollar boon to the rest of the country, Premier Ed Stelmach told a national gathering of oilsands buyers and sellers Tuesday.

"The Alberta advantage is Canada's advantage," he said. "Our boom is Canada's boom."

Stelmach's words came on the same day national census figures showed the province growing twice as quickly as the rest of the country.

The driver of much of that growth is oilsands development in the Fort McMurray area, which lures workers and capital from across Canada. The census showed the fastest growth came in areas that are directly benefiting from the petro-boom.

5 ~5 u0 x% ]3 Q# l9 z8 z9 {+ V: zThis week's conference -- the largest of its kind -- gives out-of-province contractors a chance to meet major oilsands players and their top suppliers. Of the roughly 800 conference attendees, about 500 were from outside Alberta.

With oilsands production set to rise from one million to three million barrels of oil per day over the next decade, the National Buyer/Seller Forum is designed to help meet industry's skyrocketing demands in areas such as labour and industrial supplies.

"Alberta industry, more than ever, needs you," Stelmach said.

The premier used a 2005 report from the Canadian Energy Research Institute to argue his case. The report suggests that oilsands activities will lead to a $789-billion increase in Canada's GDP by 2020.

According to the premier, that means at least $634 billion for Alberta, $102 billion for Ontario, $8 billion for Quebec and $45 billion for the other provinces and territories. It also means thousands of new jobs inside and outside Alberta.

"No matter how you slice it, no matter how you add it up, the benefits to all of Canada cannot be understated," Stelmach said.

Sandra Pupatello, the Ontario Minister of Economic Development and Trade, agreed. She said Ontario has already benefited from the oilsands and is looking for ways to gain more.

"As the demands in Alberta grow, we think we can help," Pupatello said.
