CALGARY -- Liquor merchants are applauding a move by the Alberta government to restrict a price increase proposed by the province's alcohol distributor.

8 d  a% n9 l, ~4 p4 OThe industry had a difficult year in 2006 when Connects Logistics chronically failed to deliver shipments because of what the distributor said was a labour shortage.

) I6 Q. P8 [$ r9 g- E' U8 m9 V+ hThat's one of the reasons the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission forced the supplier to roll back its proposed increases, said spokeswoman Marilyn Carlyle-Helms.

' X4 e7 o+ T& r# _, i- P! d' [; sThe increases approved by the liquor commission would see merchants pay, on average, an extra 10 cents for a 750-millilitre bottle of wine or spirits, 40 cents for a dozen imported bottled beer and 25 cents per dozen of imported canned beer.
