CALGARY -- Liquor merchants are applauding a move by the Alberta government to restrict a price increase proposed by the province's alcohol distributor.

7 m; B, N, H* F7 T' sConnects Logistics, the sole supplier to all liquor merchants in the province, will be able to raise its rates Feb. 25, but not to the levels it recently asked for.

8 g5 |: k% ^% W: l/ t' f2 j- m- w& FThe industry had a difficult year in 2006 when Connects Logistics chronically failed to deliver shipments because of what the distributor said was a labour shortage.

; `* I+ }4 e6 x, Y: A  H. [* uThat's one of the reasons the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission forced the supplier to roll back its proposed increases, said spokeswoman Marilyn Carlyle-Helms.

The increases approved by the liquor commission would see merchants pay, on average, an extra 10 cents for a 750-millilitre bottle of wine or spirits, 40 cents for a dozen imported bottled beer and 25 cents per dozen of imported canned beer.
