　　North country scene:

3 K: i- @; `: t  o0 d! C　　A hundred leagues locked in ice,
- n" a5 I$ d% B8 F: p- Z3 D
　　A thousand leagues of whirling snow.

　　Both sides of the Great Wall

5 w% k: G1 D8 L: T2 G　　One single white immensity.

　　The Yellow River"s swift current

& F, {$ E6 s: x" U8 Q( Z　　Is stilled from end to end.

　　The mountains dance like silver snakes
$ {8 j* }) B. @3 g( O1 a# }
/ g5 L1 K8 |/ e; J6 D, `9 b　　And the highlands* charge like wax-hued elephants,
: U6 j5 E7 X, A& V) L/ p
　　Vying with heaven in stature.

　　On a fine day, the land,

　　Clad in white, adorned in red,

　　Grows more enchanting.

　　This land so rich in beauty
- Q; d1 ]5 Z6 O3 Z

/ N+ R6 R7 ~. }7 M: T& j　　But alas! Chin Shih-huang and Han Wu-ti

: b5 Y! z7 S# A9 y9 w+ x4 x% r　　Were lacking in literary grace,

　　And Tang Tai-tsung and Sung Tai-tsu

" V6 a/ S/ ]3 ~　　Had little poetry in their souls;
　　And Genghis Khan,
7 f0 C; W1 L6 Y$ ]
4 \8 h% _" U: E　　Proud Son of Heaven for a day,

8 ~7 o3 _4 J; l0 J5 j　　Knew only shooting eagles, bow outstretched

) O5 b' K1 b0 J) N& C　　All are past and gone!

　　For truly great men
' v6 B5 i; {: r6 Z" B
* n' P% {% t& |3 s4 M, K' G2 ^　　Look to this age alone.
