% z/ F* S3 X) n1 k; e  z% e6 @       New Concept English, an all-time classic, is a valuable learning resource, even for people who live overseas. The short stories are generally two minutes long, but they are concise and fascinating. Indeed, these stories are simply elegant!

        New Concept English, originally a British English textbook, is typically recorded with a British accent. As an experiment, I have recorded the stories with more or less a North American accent. I hope that you can do the same kind of practice and find the old fashioned textbook beneficial. Now let's get started.

Lesson 1 A Puma at Large

Pumas are large, cat-like animals which are found in America. When reports came into London Zoo that a wild puma had been spotted forty-five miles south of London, they were not taken seriously. However, as the evidence began to accumulate, experts from the Zoo felt obliged to investigate, for the descriptions given by people who claimed to have seen the puma were extraordinarily similar.

7 h# \# q. d. r& C/ b' pThe hunt for the puma began in a small village where a woman picking blackberries saw 'a large cat' only five yards away from her. It immediately ran away when she saw it, and experts confirmed that a puma will not attack a human being unless it is cornered. The search proved difficult, for the puma was often observed at one place in the morning and at another place twenty miles away in the evening. Wherever it went, it left behind it a trail of dead deer and small animals like rabbits. Paw prints were seen in a number of places and puma fur was found clinging to bushes. Several people complained of "cat-like noises' at night and a businessman on a fishing trip saw the puma up a tree. The experts were now fully convinced that the animal was a puma, but where had it come from? As no pumas had been reported missing from any zoo in the country, this one must have been in the possession of a private collector and somehow managed to escape. The hunt went on for several weeks, but the puma was not caught. It is disturbing to think that a dangerous wild animal is still at large in the quiet countryside.

One interesting difference between the British and Amerincal pronunciation is that the British usually add a /j/ to many words, while most North Americans don't. For example, you may have heard people say puma as /pjuma/, whereas in North America people would say /pu:ma/. So here I pronounce it as /pu:ma/. Similarly, new is /nu:/, and Tuesday is /tu:zdei/.

puma 这个词应源于西班牙语.  /乌/ 的发音也是西班牙语发音;
你看地图上一些墨西哥城市就是叫*uma;
英国人读错了西班牙语,读成了/ju:/

error这个音我会发，是因为我学着人家发的。 但是从来不知道是什么r controlled vowel.

/ t) }4 r9 t+ _$ }其实还不是特别明白这个规则，我再好好看看琢磨一下, R controlled到底是什么意思? 这个R 是指哪一个R?

哦，看了你的补充我明白了：

推翻的概念，是英式发音里的，R作为辅音，和后面的元音结合成一个音节。
# v9 Q( q( w  x: a, X
而新建立的概念，是美式发音里的，R和前面的元音结合，成为一个R Controlled Vowel，和后面的元音不发生干系。

5 m5 |1 X- S$ D' I3 G7 r您过奖了。我昨天用录音读了一遍，发现效果和从前也差不多。我的单词发音在中国人里自认是80-90分，但是音调和断句还是很差。你这点上的优势是非常明显的。还希望能够在这点上多谈谈经验。

谢谢支持与鼓励！我也是靠长时间的摸索，一点一点地提高吧。练英语，尤其是口语的确是一条长期而艰苦的征程。对于音调与断句，我的体会是：1）重在模仿 （多跟读）2）要慢练。我想练语音，语调就得像学打太极一样，慢慢分解才能发现其中的细节。可能，每个人的体会或方法都不太一样。你怎么看呢？

$ c. G7 Y/ m  n4 A2 V  s; T% d% c竹老师过奖了。其实我写的东西，大部分都是从别人那里学来的成果。等下一次我再集中研究发音的时候，会把这些帖子修订一番，修改些错别字，把语焉不详的地方多加点细节，把弄错的地方修改过来，然后发上来。

我觉得录音还是非常能够帮助自己听出自己的缺点的。但是明确缺点也不容易，改正就更难些。

我刚才反复听了听自己的发音，我觉得r 的发音儿化音太强，整体感觉很铿锵，这可能和我自己的母语方言有关系。

你们是不是觉得有些老外说话特别不清楚，含着鸡蛋说话的感觉，不知道这是什么风气？有什么理论信息提供马？ 我家老大受学校影响（我和家属说话都是非常清晰i的），说话就模模糊糊的，非常懒惰的说法方式。我和孩子他爸指出过很多次，就是不知道怎么帮助他纠正。

5 q+ C7 A' R6 W9 L$ lOne aspect of speech that we have not discussed in this forum is articulation, which can be a separate issue. Articulation is "the formation of clear and distinct sounds in speech," according to the Oxford dictionary. To improve articulation may take a very special approach and only people who have training in it can give reliable advice as to how to speak more clearly.

articulate, 我一直认为是指在语义上表达清晰。语音的清晰有个词叫作enunciation.

In the context of speech,  "enunciate" and "articulate" have simililar meaning. "Articulate" can also mean that an idea or argument is clear and effective in either speech or writing.
