昨天（4日）早上在埃德蒙顿西部，维亚火车（Via train）与一辆卡车相撞，造成3人死亡。

此次重大交通事故发生在昨天早上8点40分左右。目击者希克（Karen Hick）事后说，当时就听到一个巨大的声响。预警的信号灯仍在工作，警方正在检查另一端的信号灯是否正常。

在事发现场，被撞毁的卡车散乱在一条地沟附近，金属被扭曲，完全无法辨认。

死者是父亲和两个孩子，男子身份没有披露。埃德蒙顿学校局发言人昨天只是透露，两个遇难的孩子都是在埃德蒙顿西端一所小学就读，一个上2年级，一个上4年级。

维亚铁路女发言人卡罗斯基（Catherine Kaloutsky）说，事发的火车是从温哥华驶往多伦多，车上有227名乘客，26名工作人员。事发后火车被迫停驶，乘客留在车上，直到急救人员赶到。

调查人员表示，当时由暴风雪造成的恶劣路况和能见度不高，可能也是事故发生的一个原因。

1 `5 r* C% c" S6 sVia spokeswoman Catherine Kaloutsky says the collision happened at a level crossing protected by gates, lights and bells. No one on the train was physically hurt.

* [! ~6 P; @3 S/ N"We have 227 passengers on board the train, none of whom sustained any injuries," Kaloutsky said Tuesday. "Our two engineers, understandably, have requested relief."

Kaloutsky said the westbound train en route from Toronto to Vancouver hit the truck around 8:15 a.m. While there were whiteout conditions at the time, investigators have not indicated if they were a factor.

A witness at the scene was quoted as saying she heard a "loud crash like a door slamming and I saw the vehicle fly, and when the train left I wasn't sure if I was imagining it."

Police say the girls were both under 10.

The lead locomotive in the Via train sustained minor damage and was repaired, Kaloutsky added.

Kaloutsky said the coroner released the train before 3 p.m. and it was expected to reach Vancouver sometime Wednesday afternoon.
