Environmental Specialist

Job Description/Duties:         NOVA Chemicals Joffre site, located 20 minutes east of Red Deer, Alberta, is the result of an idea generated back in the early 1970's. Today, we're one of the largest ethylene and polyethylene sites in North America with 3 world-scale ethylene plants, 2 world-scale polyethylene plants, and a large utilities infrastructure to support these facilities. As an Environmental Specialist at the NOVA Chemicals Joffre Site, you will be a member of the Manufacturing West Environment and Regulatory Team. This team is responsible for the development and implementation of a variety of environmental management programs. General responsibilities will include assisting our manufacturing departments with meeting Environmental requirements through the collection, management and evaluation of environmental monitoring data and the compilation of summary reports. The following are specific examples of programs that you would be involved in: AIR QUALITY, WATER QUALITY, AND WASTE MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS: - Organize and interpret data, perform calculations and prepare and submit the required reports to regulatory bodies and other stakeholders. - Provide interpretation of technical and regulatory documents. - Provide direction to contractors involved with source emission monitoring, ambient air monitoring, leak detection and repair programs, water and wastewater management programs, waste management programs. - Assist units in setting emission targets and/or identifying emission reduction opportunities. SOIL AND GROUNDWATER MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS: - Support the soil/groundwater monitoring programs through coordination of sample collection and overall maintenance of the site monitoring well network. - Understand monitoring program fundamentals, including field sampling methods, laboratory analytical techniques, and electronic data management along with statistical analysis tools to assimilate large quantities of data into clear and concise reports. REGULATORY SUPPORT PROGRAMS: -Understand the implications of regulatory requirements in their functional and associated areas. -Identify/alert others to possible compliance issues and participate in their resolution. -Interpret various licenses, permits and approvals and update/prepare procedures for operations and maintenance teams to follow regarding regulatory requirements. - Review and communicate regulatory change to site leadership teams. - Participate in the preparation and submission of regulatory amendment documents. QUALIFICATIONS: -Post secondary education, preferably University graduate in Natural or Applied Sciences OR Environmental Engineering with 1 to 5 years of directly applicable work experience in the environmental field or equivalent. - Demonstrated analytical and troubleshooting skills, the ability to interpret and apply technical documentation, as well as general knowledge in environmental monitoring principles are required. - Good verbal and written communication skills are a key competency for this role. - Experience in utilizing computer systems for data acquisition, data management and statistical analysis is essential. - A working knowledge of instrumentation used in environmental monitoring programs would be an asset. - The ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams and manage contract resources is also a requirement of this position.5 O* H& Y: {. a
