Students at the University of Alberta have voted in favour of mandatory bus passes, a move that will cost students an extra $75 every term.

A vote held earlier in the week saw 84 per cent of students in favour of the passes, which will be mandatory regardless of whether or not they ride on transit.- M9 C$ H" v5 q5 I

- U3 t0 S7 G( s# BGetting to this point took five years of debate and negotiations, said U of A student union president Samantha Power on Friday.

0 E3 F6 x% K/ _8 @" Y6 H5 h3 i"We really needed to make sure that it was affordable for students because it's mandatory. We didn't want students who don't use transit as often to be put at a disadvantage, so at $75 for four months, it's about one round trip a week."

Power said the U-Pass will be environmentally friendly by encouraging more students to use transit, and those who already buy monthly passes will save about $300 a year when the new pass kicks in next fall.
