　　North country scene:
                                                                                               
7 _1 f* q& b9 G2 F+ e6 s　　A hundred leagues locked in ice,

　　A thousand leagues of whirling snow.

. X1 D, {( ~9 R) y3 X5 a　　Both sides of the Great Wall
! r) z! K9 ~8 n# z& q) A' ]( W! u
　　One single white immensity.
/ ?6 V. _! ~5 }9 W6 c; K( x
* I& F# X8 B( x, R  M　　The Yellow River"s swift current

　　Is stilled from end to end.
5 f* N/ G: z  d, I. x
+ |4 M! w+ g* k　　The mountains dance like silver snakes
, n; _: V  m% r# t' P$ b
　　And the highlands* charge like wax-hued elephants,

+ Z! t" m, a6 y" h3 D3 d2 G　　Vying with heaven in stature.

4 ?3 z3 h0 G8 D1 `8 Q6 |6 D- A　　On a fine day, the land,

　　Clad in white, adorned in red,

　　Grows more enchanting.

' \) o% |; g! L# d# F　　This land so rich in beauty

　　Has made countless heroes bow in homage.

　　But alas! Chin Shih-huang and Han Wu-ti

　　Were lacking in literary grace,
# Z' n+ J2 D5 O7 P  z" A
4 c' o0 h# e: O# W! Z8 _　　And Tang Tai-tsung and Sung Tai-tsu

+ M; b+ d+ @  k1 z  b. _　　Had little poetry in their souls;
: x( q2 G$ w3 `6 v　　And Genghis Khan,
+ o" N) E6 P: r/ D& ?
+ ^: k( w" n( m6 P' p# h　　Proud Son of Heaven for a day,

" h! R/ W- r; D* B4 G+ G5 @　　Knew only shooting eagles, bow outstretched

　　All are past and gone!

! R8 R7 ?  b6 O5 o　　For truly great men

　　Look to this age alone.
