　　North country scene:

　　A hundred leagues locked in ice,
7 H: Y( ^" m9 n5 Y
6 ^! H& n4 _' w0 Y; f6 o1 _! e　　A thousand leagues of whirling snow.

) I7 x) `4 M  |0 r( {( p; C　　Both sides of the Great Wall
3 A9 D& Y1 x- e. V
  K) ^0 _! f! l. A/ g: _  i7 V# T" M　　One single white immensity.

　　The Yellow River"s swift current

+ C. z+ h' l, \" E# I& D5 Q' D　　Is stilled from end to end.

　　The mountains dance like silver snakes

　　And the highlands* charge like wax-hued elephants,

. L' c7 F6 {6 O6 P　　Vying with heaven in stature.

　　On a fine day, the land,

　　Clad in white, adorned in red,

" ~5 n6 k9 S% h7 s0 W2 N; o; h　　Grows more enchanting.
' F  y8 w7 w5 Q4 A
　　This land so rich in beauty

　　Has made countless heroes bow in homage.

0 j$ j1 F' h/ q% G: u7 P9 F; u　　But alas! Chin Shih-huang and Han Wu-ti
1 a( O& Q  y/ O
　　Were lacking in literary grace,

　　And Tang Tai-tsung and Sung Tai-tsu

3 G+ c$ e0 i; m% u9 D　　Had little poetry in their souls;
4 M2 a  `- m5 c6 F　　And Genghis Khan,
3 Y* N- A: N8 [) X- v& h. j" Z
" }& }: T2 `  N. [% P　　Proud Son of Heaven for a day,

　　Knew only shooting eagles, bow outstretched

　　All are past and gone!

　　For truly great men

　　Look to this age alone.
