Master Composter/Recycler Program / Free!

Dear colleague: once a year, the Waste Management Branch hosts the
8 D6 X' |6 v. R4 j! b; gMaster Composter-Recycler Program. Over a 3 weeks course schedule* B/ H- s; ?3 E/ m" A
(Tues./Thursday evenings and Saturday) volunteers will learn about
4 S5 K2 U# @: m& Qenvironmental stewardship in our city, such as: history of waste
! P" N3 S# C: |4 c) g# t* T/ [management; home composting; household hazardous waste;8 y) H. F. ^; g& w1 l v: {( V0 z. P
vermin-composting and residential recycling.& a/ [: c, E& p$ h) T5 t
' `& |( V; U* o8 {8 G4 \This course offers in-class instruction as well as several field trips
" _) Z3 P9 H( d) E' S4 w" T! ]to various City facilities. After finishing the course, graduates$ u( s0 p! C# x0 @
complete 35 hours of volunteer activity promoting the four R's: k6 d; o: H5 j' z! C
reduce, reuse, recycle and recover. Graduates become important5 ~- D$ n" G% I: C' L
resources in their communities as they broaden awareness about the! e* S9 h# b2 z* @3 {2 w
importance of composting and recycling.

. v' l# a. b* aExamples of volunteer activities include: help with Reuse Fairs & the
3 ?5 W( T" m. C$ S. F/ M9 AReuse Centre; helping friends/neighbours with composting problems;
2 x, M5 }' y# J: q8 Z: R! ~. ?public education display booths; assisting with programs and
: E+ B$ S& R7 t0 V4 c# n8 J; w6 z) amaintenance at the City Compost Education Centres; assisting at" ?. }8 Q- S6 H. O7 D0 _! B
various demonstration gardens and general public and school/ S6 q) O; j3 A
presentations.- g e/ C& W2 M& l0 [
! f, R' s/ h7 [6 }/ t1 Y- n9 t& PThere are many other opportunities for volunteers to contribute and: l) a# Q' d. }
volunteers are able to choose the opportunities that interest them the! n: N( l0 s( A' C5 O2 C

knowledge with others, then apply to become a Master
