question for shower pan?

please help me out:

% ?9 U8 t6 L$ H! e( s+ Y9 \does a curb needed by code in building a mortar shower pan for a tile shower? the curb looks ugly and dangerous for older people.  i wonder if i can have a tile shower without the curb, only slop and glass panel to prevent water splash out.
