it all depand on what you want. a diamond ring can be broken down into the following 4 categories:
# J: B$ e; ]& Q: U: \& a. L! S# @4 }( m) A9 }; |+ a
size ( t0 W4 i! F9 Z) A, D* Z. b
colour7 y# e$ [1 m# B( L1 E

cut- o9 z( U) E- O! K- n+ B3 J
8 c& h9 p- c% c. \' Y9 m" n+ b) U' ]if you want a very high clarity and colour, then $10K CAD may only get you a 0.5 ct diamond if you don't care as much about colour and clarity, then you can easily get a 1.0 ct or bigger ring. typically, girls care more about the clarity and size.

o9 j, }3 P3 ~the cutting of the diamond is also very important. a well cut 0.5 ct diamond may look as big or maybe even bigger on surface than a 1.0 ct diamond if it wasn't cut properly. - o. u: p7 T) |9 \. R. n- G' o! n2 A

the solitary princess diamond is the most popular style for an engagement ring. solitaty means a single large diamond (not a whole bunch of small diamonds or dusts but with the total weight added to a 1.0 ct) and princess means it's cut into a round shape on top (not square or oval shape)8 V- a$ h7 U: k: G! x% ~1 Q

the band (ring itself) can be found in white gold 14K or 18K. typically, the better the diamond, the better band it comes with. ie <$5000 ring usually comes with a 14K band but >$5000 ring will come with a 18K band.
