Dear colleague: once a year, the Waste Management Branch hosts the% O0 y) G" Z5 g) I! K
Master Composter-Recycler Program. Over a 3 weeks course schedule* l. L7 S* z) z0 ^9 g, M8 y8 W; Y
(Tues./Thursday evenings and Saturday) volunteers will learn about& Q5 D% D! v$ A. ^! h& Y3 v- U
environmental stewardship in our city, such as: history of waste
' L( T2 _, \6 c: P* m- Y& U1 umanagement; home composting; household hazardous waste;$ u# Q( }- u9 P# _, r: G
vermin-composting and residential recycling.
7 E- |7 R/ H+ b+ Z: {
7 W, ~2 w) X4 `4 g* s8 B$ \This course offers in-class instruction as well as several field trips% t, R! r3 h! r/ `
to various City facilities. After finishing the course, graduates
7 w( v) v$ V/ ~+ ? ^complete 35 hours of volunteer activity promoting the four R's:0 b. M; c# s# p7 p% |+ l, ]/ P& } B
reduce, reuse, recycle and recover. Graduates become important. \' F& a2 s( K/ ?' r7 K) T. z4 S5 k
resources in their communities as they broaden awareness about the% t0 L% J0 @/ q# e. y- k/ Y, j
importance of composting and recycling.# ~* ~# F# L( k" ^$ E/ v3 |# E2 T
6 \. c7 }! X1 dExamples of volunteer activities include: help with Reuse Fairs & the
, r2 E+ G6 z9 y1 M2 n$ H& MReuse Centre; helping friends/neighbours with composting problems;
$ |3 i6 I* e: x. r4 ypublic education display booths; assisting with programs and6 K( J7 o7 p, D( P. D
maintenance at the City Compost Education Centres; assisting at
E6 M" q- Q# ^& t5 Q& tvarious demonstration gardens and general public and school5 c* \. f8 a' e) B" J
presentations.) j% \* L: M/ X" R: V/ Y. W/ I
! s+ u; }' ~# }5 }' ^% FThere are many other opportunities for volunteers to contribute and, S3 l. g6 ~ K" {! l
volunteers are able to choose the opportunities that interest them the- T8 s5 W0 o, J% X U C
