The Advanced Materials business unit seeks a Safety Assistant to assist the business unit over the summer months. * _4 I6 N# m& T5 c7 z. j
) j& n% @3 M1 w0 F3 @' W4 Q) gResponsibilities include:- y `2 Z1 Q H. P, o& C& f
8 _/ A5 z1 W1 H$ ^
1. Chemical list and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS’s): b7 l/ ^5 T4 H
• help complete up-to-date chemical lists for all laboratories within the department2 [2 b K* o+ ]' v& F- I$ l
• collect and obtain MSDS’s for all chemicals
' ?5 U* \4 |9 a* w$ U• make sure all chemicals are properly labelled and stored
( Z1 z& M3 a# [$ n3 O' Z• proper disposal of all unwanted chemicals( x; }6 I- r6 t" Y$ r
• finalize chemical lists and then duplicate and label all MSDS’s for distribution to OH&S for the MSDS on line system.

# {, q! v& R! w x0 q7 A2. Standard Operation Procedures (SOP’s) and Hazard Assessments (HA’s)
1 f+ O9 k5 N5 y1 L) e/ t( _2 i• help update the department SOP’s and HA’s. This will include verification of existing SOP’s and HA’s and tracking any that are needed.

3. Tracking System
6 g0 l0 c9 R) i: D" m• help develop a tracking system for adding or removal of chemicals as well as continual updating and verification of SOP’s and HA’s ; M3 v! ]; ?& L" r0 M# z

Candidates should be inquisitive, thorough, and willing to learn. Some education and/or experience in safety is preferred. Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment are required.

n) S$ e% [( E1 H& R- k0 ~This is a two-month summer position, preferably commencing the middle of June, which will pay an hourly wage commensurate with education and experience. Final candidates will be asked to undergo a security screening.
