CHIEF RETURNING OFFICER

5 J, A2 ]$ J) h/ q& h! x4 `JOB SUMMARY:  The Chief Returning Officer reports to the President of  0 T% @7 ?8 |5 Q# Z
the Students' Union and oversees all electoral logistics as per Bylaw  
& A7 P% n* g) ?- y' v) s5 u2000.  The Chief Returning Officer shall be recommended to Students'  
5 U4 ]+ L5 g2 P/ b# F5 _3 JCouncil in the manner set out in the Council Administration Committee  , r- d7 ^, Y: l* Z, E; s. V
Standing Orders by April 15 and serve from May 1 to April 30 of the  % {, h& }# A! M6 W, ^* }

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:. Y+ _1 O* o3 B  Y% S* }  {  O0 ?5 o

( L# G2 i; M. H( _1) To run the elections as per Bylaws 2000! d! G/ J: k$ G7 m
0 [* v1 M- g0 X1 K
2) To run referenda/plebiscites as per Bylaw 2000.
7 a: l9 V5 }  I( S+ N7 V; d( M0 b/ |7 ]
3) To choose the Deputy Returning Officer(s) and assign their duties.

; w) U# H5 W8 Y' Z7 A4) To organize polls during elections/referenda, including appointing  
0 l4 [4 e$ R# madequate poll staff and situating polls at appropriate locations  # X, S* m# @8 {+ a& s; d
across campus, and advertising the poll locations.

3 i: L% F3 T( d# r, b& D4 f5) To oversee the physical count of the ballots during elections/
- c5 Q2 V( K. S0 K, m$ |1 R3 Mreferenda.( c0 x2 m8 {! e9 ^; @

0 k! O% X9 ^2 F9 S2 C& {6 C  K6) To report the result of an election/referendum to the appropriate  $ W: }3 C/ I1 r: _( ]

7) To facilitate classroom speaking arrangements during an election/
/ b2 l$ a" \% q7 @7 Q1 {# i$ V0 r* S. M. jreferendum.5 `, E# C/ o# l) \

7 S; s7 r: l$ b5 x5 q3 c- d3 Z To enforce budgetary regulations as stipulated in the Elections  
& k  n$ @* u) z6 M/ L2 U0 s2 sBylaw 2000.

# G. h3 c$ u4 r10) To be available to all parties during elections/referenda for a  
. w. W+ o8 w1 l, Aminimum of four (4) working hours a day, between Monday to Friday,  ; q/ n5 x8 j# w; H
from the first working day after nominations close until the last day    s2 j& v% u' ~5 Y- a
of voting.  These hours are to be posted in advance.; ~4 [/ q4 K! M4 u! Q. v+ a/ V
4 A! X! W1 G4 h9 ?; e  _
11) To act as the arbitrator in any dispute which may arise during  
( x: B$ s- K5 T1 B- Zthe course of an election/referendum.
% f5 E7 d/ M( T/ c6 }/ h4 C; d) i$ g
12) To ensure that a cost effective and accurate ballot counting  , Y1 x! k: q% ]* k3 O' q
process is in place.$ q* N! j; O7 B2 D" a

13) To submit to Students' Council, prior to April 30, a final report  
9 K# e' j# C; x) p" D$ Bof activities and recommendations.

/ N5 h8 F9 [; h  @14) To organize a minimum of one (1) forum to be held during the week  ; h" t; ^" @  |! `+ v# s: @' H% H
of campaigning.# e( z3 o% n) a; T3 e) i+ d, T

15) Perform other job related duties as required by the Council

% D5 H8 z4 p! \' b! l* kQUALIFICATIONS:
' d$ p! A2 \: _4 B) A5 N
5 I- }: }# ]7 M( X1) Must be an undergrad student registered in at least one (1) course  
4 [* F+ F# L3 p4 g7 Z- S4 y4 Kfor each of the terms of Winter Session and shall be a full Students'  
0 h; [4 U' ^' N+ g8 A$ pUnion member.
7 l2 Q. M( o1 z- U" D$ m' h8 W) K: v! C# H8 ]- p* f
2) Must have some experience in student elections.
% [$ G' Q' n! E9 q# I% O
" l, G7 d$ p$ X9 I3) Shall not concurrently hold a position on Students' Council, or  9 @. c( G1 V3 ~4 z/ p6 v/ r
any of its standing boards, committees, or any other paid position  / O  T# @7 `3 }/ U# C# M' a( A
with the Students' Union.0 d: b0 z& |3 b6 n

4) Willingness and ability to work varying hours.5 N/ F$ [. F6 a+ {* W

staff, students and the general public.
