CHIEF RETURNING OFFICER

Remuneration: $6,032.00 contract

JOB SUMMARY:  The Chief Returning Officer reports to the President of  : |9 D- C. X4 i8 H8 w! V
the Students' Union and oversees all electoral logistics as per Bylaw  2 @7 z" {) h& e* A) t9 P7 s
2000.  The Chief Returning Officer shall be recommended to Students'  ' P5 y- ^1 p# A- v* x# a# m
Council in the manner set out in the Council Administration Committee  
8 t* w% Z# W" k5 u" C. q* e9 BStanding Orders by April 15 and serve from May 1 to April 30 of the  
8 b2 l: z/ Q( Z1 k) ^2 T- V1 ?year following their appointment.$ p  g( I/ N2 p6 q1 A, s

, S; B" d( @' ]- sDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1) To run the elections as per Bylaws 2000
: ]/ n& v' w5 r$ s$ F& ]- ~, ^) l
0 l# R) t( _. l% T8 F" w2) To run referenda/plebiscites as per Bylaw 2000.9 s0 b0 |0 J: S/ L/ P

" a1 G" D3 I! ^% S6 C! K2 S3) To choose the Deputy Returning Officer(s) and assign their duties.
3 k( g% L& e1 ?; K" k( R
* a5 c+ @3 b3 j6 R4) To organize polls during elections/referenda, including appointing  
3 M$ C1 A1 o7 l- k5 R2 y  \adequate poll staff and situating polls at appropriate locations  - t8 S; Z5 d- n! @1 V1 E
across campus, and advertising the poll locations.
, B# Y4 j* W' {/ i. k$ p  d* S7 A! G! ?" y# ?  M
5) To oversee the physical count of the ballots during elections/ 9 F  _5 p# v) @+ J8 u, K
referenda./ H/ b2 M/ S  w

  }4 I) [4 F0 w5 U* Q; U6) To report the result of an election/referendum to the appropriate  , O- B- x5 T: K5 u, M# }# `
parties.
7 M4 D: ?! G: {: r0 ]1 A$ Q  V5 E; T' g$ y2 ?4 x
7) To facilitate classroom speaking arrangements during an election/ 1 }5 V4 c' u8 o  j# Z
referendum.

/ y/ e" r9 w5 D7 P# y0 f To enforce budgetary regulations as stipulated in the Elections  
' C$ x7 ^5 W& L1 VBylaw 2000.

5 u( Q" S2 g" I: i4 m5 N# D4 k( @10) To be available to all parties during elections/referenda for a  % G7 V4 X0 `$ f4 P7 ]& |
minimum of four (4) working hours a day, between Monday to Friday,  
& C& \: a4 t5 Q9 U% o6 b; j) `from the first working day after nominations close until the last day  
1 `% I  g4 p! A  a+ A. J6 Wof voting.  These hours are to be posted in advance.
7 V1 r/ g3 R; I& }1 s' {- H! }* Y: ?) R* v2 T) ]9 o' c
11) To act as the arbitrator in any dispute which may arise during  
# l( X, X! j: G8 ]9 r5 x/ i3 t, [the course of an election/referendum.

0 E' l# X' S" z7 a3 H12) To ensure that a cost effective and accurate ballot counting  
; ]) i9 Y3 R+ b4 Uprocess is in place.

# i. k. s/ R8 B. s3 N13) To submit to Students' Council, prior to April 30, a final report  6 O! I7 d* n8 t. T8 Z+ ]0 @! e8 M
of activities and recommendations.

14) To organize a minimum of one (1) forum to be held during the week  
; A7 M8 }7 q; }5 W# u8 i+ jof campaigning.

15) Perform other job related duties as required by the Council  ; }! E' E5 b" {) C
Administration Committee.

: x  T$ a3 j/ x  qQUALIFICATIONS:

) `; @$ v5 {) o0 Y2 {1) Must be an undergrad student registered in at least one (1) course  9 R, g4 y* @3 ]/ t
for each of the terms of Winter Session and shall be a full Students'  
+ _& ^& z$ J/ q# E# o7 S! V$ `& aUnion member.7 L7 F' J0 R) u$ V3 T$ h- f
3 i! r5 ]& i5 q* i5 W1 v
2) Must have some experience in student elections.) x+ ^7 J- S/ t" ]2 R- o' ?
, V, Q1 ?/ u, N  k1 y
3) Shall not concurrently hold a position on Students' Council, or  
8 Y# j- C& a$ @  [* Hany of its standing boards, committees, or any other paid position  * d/ \' Q- k, _) U+ g; x; l
with the Students' Union.

4) Willingness and ability to work varying hours.

5) Excellent project management skills are required.

staff, students and the general public.
