Today I was volunteering at a post office. A man in an old jacket with uncombed hair came to the counter. He had a wallet in his hand, and put it on the counter. He told me: 0 [2 q0 V' p& j# A o2 Q
"I am going to send it back". $ [9 l3 \3 ~' ?" r! ~8 c" I! }
I did not understand what he meant by "it", because usually people would send a letter or a parcel back to the sender, and I did not see he had any of those. So I asked him:
C' b: [+ A( d0 r "I am sorry, what are you sending back?"
: q/ w* p0 h7 cHe said, "the Wallet, I am sending back the wallet." Then he added: "I am going to pay the postage."
# ^, S5 w; M% e" ]4 u, e* r3 |"Oh, you found a wallet, and you are going to send it back to the person who lost it?" 2 g5 Y; I0 W) K- p) W
"Yes, I did."3 B( j- j! y" y% B4 J7 ?2 [
Finally I understood: this dishevelled man found a wallet, and he was going to return it to the owner by post.
7 d8 Z* T& f! w+ z6 I' i, jHe took the ID card from the wallet, and showed me the address of the loser of the wallet. I saw there were several one-hundred bills in the wallet. % N2 k* v% j. @( s: ^$ F+ h, U4 X. V
"Are you going to take some money from the wallet to pay the postage?"% ]: x ~/ j( H7 [+ {
"No, I am not. I do not do those things."
' `# O. {5 @$ b- Q7 HHe took out his wallet, which was nearly worn-out, small, and almost empty. There were some coins inside. . M3 p% y) }1 Y: V4 n$ Z1 k) z
I gave him a bubbled envelope, and instructed him where to write the addresses. He wrote the owner's address, but stopped at writing a return address. He asked:: r* e0 B; ?: N1 ?+ _) _
"Is it okay that I do not write this part?"
! |' o! k9 k, ]9 u/ z! P* ^"Yes, you may." I thought he must want to be a nameless hero. But he said:
4 u0 ]; q! h Q"I do not have an address."
# g; G0 t* n: Y$ k6 p% a( b: {' o: TI was surprised: "oh, where do you live?": J! Y* j6 o7 W
He did not look up, and said: "I do not have a home."
( e) I. D' L2 F7 y$ i6 w+ d7 |5 qMy heart had a sudden jump. I realized that this is a homeless man who found money but was sending it back to the person who lost it. * p9 x1 K- {6 c) L: [
He did not a posses a home, but he had a big heart. He had the precious fortune of being a man of integrity.
