3 c/ p! G4 \ b/ s' iAn Edmonton-based trucking coming is facing $3 million dollars worth of fines under the Traffic Safety Act for allegedly operating overweight vehicles on city roads.+ d# w2 I( p, s, A8 T
A police investigation revealed that between August 15 and September 19, the unnamed company made 1,907 trips to the waste management facility located on Yellowhead Trail and 170 Street.
' O* r% o' f+ k( T' h7 UPolice say the trucks were transporting loads that were overweight by a least one tonne each visit. One truck was recorded as being 17.9 tonnes overweight.1 F0 Q# \3 i0 l4 z/ J
"The company is facing a fine of just over $3 million dollars," said EPS Const. Dave Beattie. "It's a big fine, I'll give you that, but for the police it's not about the value of the fine, it's about keeping these roads safe.", ] s; r4 x) ~0 v
Beattie explains that with overweight vehicles, braking can be a problem.& U0 n! J2 }% l- |9 ?. K+ C e* E
"The last thing I'm sure you, and any of us want, is to be in front of a vehicle that is basically 17 tonnes over what it's allowed to be on the road when you stop at a red light.", R" C, l$ H8 z5 a
Beattie added that roadways can be destroyed by overweight vehicles since they cause cracks and potholes.
