An Edmonton-based trucking coming is facing $3 million dollars worth of fines under the Traffic Safety Act for allegedly operating overweight vehicles on city roads.
2 A0 r4 S  o4 ]% q6 W  m+ |& qA police investigation revealed that between August 15 and September 19, the unnamed company made 1,907 trips to the waste management facility located on Yellowhead Trail and 170 Street.
' D% E, `6 X. ^( m, J- I: XPolice say the trucks were transporting loads that were overweight by a least one tonne each visit. One truck was recorded as being 17.9 tonnes overweight.
+ z/ i1 d+ ?, ]% W1 C& H& j$ W0 C"The company is facing a fine of just over $3 million dollars," said EPS Const. Dave Beattie. "It's a big fine, I'll give you that, but for the police it's not about the value of the fine, it's about keeping these roads safe."
1 A$ [) K- w0 s' MBeattie explains that with overweight vehicles, braking can be a problem.
"The last thing I'm sure you, and any of us want, is to be in front of a vehicle that is basically 17 tonnes over what it's allowed to be on the road when you stop at a red light."
& S, w0 U' {, K) _" iBeattie added that roadways can be destroyed by overweight vehicles since they cause cracks and potholes.
The company is due in court on Thursday, December 3.
