An Edmonton-based trucking coming is facing $3 million dollars worth of fines under the Traffic Safety Act for allegedly operating overweight vehicles on city roads.4 @" t$ d! X/ L; u" i8 X5 {
A police investigation revealed that between August 15 and September 19, the unnamed company made 1,907 trips to the waste management facility located on Yellowhead Trail and 170 Street.( ]5 r8 a8 i }3 u5 ]! O4 Y7 V
Police say the trucks were transporting loads that were overweight by a least one tonne each visit. One truck was recorded as being 17.9 tonnes overweight.
c/ ^. ~+ d; R"The company is facing a fine of just over $3 million dollars," said EPS Const. Dave Beattie. "It's a big fine, I'll give you that, but for the police it's not about the value of the fine, it's about keeping these roads safe."4 u0 o/ @ P/ k& y h) g+ \
Beattie explains that with overweight vehicles, braking can be a problem.% A0 E' E1 s, f# ^( b
"The last thing I'm sure you, and any of us want, is to be in front of a vehicle that is basically 17 tonnes over what it's allowed to be on the road when you stop at a red light.", A h) _9 x; f D
Beattie added that roadways can be destroyed by overweight vehicles since they cause cracks and potholes.
