谈英语俚语

谈英语俚语
$ L! @1 H2 z8 Q- g' F7 b% \% i/ A. C8 u! h: B

4 \( v- C7 Y: h* A在中文报章杂志上,常看到一些英语俚语(口语)的中文翻译。诸如「黑羊」、「踢水桶」、「阿奇里斯
+ g: v6 A1 B( b2 m+ p1 g. U之踝」等等。其实这些译文都是来自英语「black sheep」、「kick the bucket」和「Achille's heel」。( a! [$ w2 p  U9 p% m# e$ @7 t
若是这些译文不附加原文予以解释,恐怕「迷惑」的读者,不在少数。这不是影响了语文的沟通目的吗?为此,介绍一些这类的英语俚语(在此称之为「特别字眼」),也许对某些读者会有点助益!

(1) empty suit:; s* a, x# l% Q$ X
指不重要的人或假冒者 ( an unimportant person or a phony) 多半用在商业上,当名词用。; H6 F/ s8 Z4 ?$ F
(这本是business term,指虽然穿著整齐全套的 business suit,却不能干、没有能力,不受尊敬的人。)
% E" I7 J# @$ @% |+ g; r例如:' S! Q  ?0 N1 R9 U
An empty suit generally gets no attention from the public.
" `# [2 ]' s7 I$ Z- P) |7 m2 P7 t(一位虚伪不实的人,通常不会受到大众的注意。)% Y3 |' J+ g2 U# P5 @) U7 y
Mr. Lee acts like a big shot, but he is just an empty suit.
& P) _& n8 q: x. ~9 f(李先生装著像位大人物,但他只是不重要的人。)
: }6 O1 y9 G! ~  Q6 A. \- R) W虽然这句话,多半只用单数,但有时也用复数:# ?9 Z! `: J) t* P6 |' N
The company is filled with a lot of empty suits.1 f1 T, ^; l$ _( I) J8 C  S9 Y
(这公司有许多虚伪不重要的人)
+ V4 `. z# x1 I' p(2) fair-haired boy:
0 k" i* g. }8 Q  A" R指得宠的人,也就是宠儿,多半指男人(a fa-vorite person usually referring to a man)
, z- X6 t% `! t9 e* d* P(通常用单数,当名词用)$ y' c/ e- n  s& B  t9 M# H4 ?
例如:. p, l. @/ M% W! u
Mr. Cheney has become a fair-haired boy to the presi-dent.% o" Z% j7 R6 x1 A9 r# T: A
( Cheney 先生变成总统的宠儿。)
& D" I: f) s0 t& @$ s9 o3 k1 mNot being a fair-haired boy, Mr. Wong never gets pay-raises and promotions.
+ b% W+ g- I$ u6 ]/ I' ^0 z(王先生不得宠,从未得到加薪和升级。)& F8 I- F' x4 U$ ~, g
有时也可用复数:
  b5 k" k2 r$ F  c! f' u2 O3 I+ _Mr. Bush selected two former fair-haired boys for his cabinet.
; B; A+ n( o: j2 ~; c' A) [(Bush 先生为他的内阁选用两位过去的宠儿。)( w3 H- w. C& F& T2 c% f8 P
Fair-haired boys tend to receive special treatment by their bosses.- z1 M$ l" P8 E9 M; Y2 i
(得宠的人,较会受到他们上司的特别待遇。)
( ]- y  K1 p; J( m(但没有 fair-haired girl 的说法)0 [3 c; w1 J$ @; O  O
(3) fishing expedition:
5 D# ?$ j6 W  F5 m: O为了搜罗新闻材料而进行盘问或调查(Try to ask questions to get more useful information): j; u' `5 e2 R8 l% I1 J* D
(这句话本是 legal term,当名词用,多半用单数)/ a9 [7 S9 v4 J
例如:# I# }, c# Z- \1 p7 k$ ^) V
The judge said the prosecutor was on a fishing expedi-tion and stopped him.
+ ?5 R1 a* J0 \5 z(法官说原告为搜罗罪证而进行调查,要他停止。)
9 ]% C' K5 w: |: D' zThe police are on a fishing expedition in order to solve(或 resolve)the murder case.
. s6 E; d" p! n(警察进行调查盘问,以便侦破谋杀案。)! x2 n3 P! N4 B! J0 l5 P+ q  M
(注:solve 和 resolve 都有「解决」的意思,但通常solve用在「问题上」,resolve 用在「争执」上。solve the problem 而 resolve the conflict)8 ?- O/ r2 i& y* j: c0 x
The reporter went on a fishing expedition about the president's involvement in the Iraq War.9 B# ]! U: C4 Q9 K5 U8 r% L
(记者搜罗有关总统卷入伊拉克战争的新闻资料。)2 q2 m+ t! i  m* ]0 p$ j8 d- b
偶尔也有人用复数:* ^4 n  Y) r* x1 ^) {! U/ S
Several fishing expeditions have been made before he decides to run for office.
& b! W  W) g6 C8 I' d5 o(在他决定竞选之前,他做了数次的收集资料调查。)
" Z# ?* _+ y0 c" K6 y7 a; K/ N(4) filthy rich:
0 x6 k  U2 K2 d- j7 k: w; S意思是很富有,很有钱。(very wealthy)2 P% F& Z' G5 Q1 {0 E$ V- {. [+ W
(未必是不义之财或肮脏钱)
6 |1 K1 U6 H) J$ s多半当形容词用。例如:
) o7 n" _9 @1 A! [6 }With a beautiful mansion and an expensive car, Mr. B must be filthy rich.( h  N& s9 P( M7 R
( B先生住著富丽堂皇的大厦,开著昂贵的汽车,他一定很有钱。)
2 g6 f6 ~) \+ o$ r; J8 y- zDespite being filthy rich, Mr. C is still leading his life in a frugal way.' [0 ~. {, d0 g, M$ a/ J, l! U
(尽管 C 先生很富有,他仍然过著简朴的生活。)
6 r6 d- k& F3 v0 j" S) uA filthy rich person tends to have a superiority complex toward others.
) U9 ?( j- c) t, z0 N# z( Q# t(有钱者对他人有优越感的倾向。)4 X" W  ^; W. H; d! H' P3 B% o& m
Filthy rich people are not necessarily well-respected unless they possess noble characters.- Y& Q: I" o6 t. ~
(有钱人未必受人尊敬,除非有高尚的品格。)8 }  c, G8 c5 f/ O  z
(注:但没有 cleanly rich 的说法)
+ e6 Z# D; w5 I& s4 ]+ W1 Q7 _(5) fairy godmother:* o6 L; G1 J/ y9 L" `2 e# ^
指及时慷慨提供帮助的人(someone who unex-pectedly gives generous assistance)2 T2 T  J3 |& z/ i
(多半指有钱的女人)1 E2 _9 O, v+ Z
(这是来自 fairy tale, 指女人有 magical power;因为童话故事里没有男人,故不说 fairy godfather。当名词用。例如:7 Q) b! M4 b' X6 z- u7 N. T
Mr. A has a fairy godmother who gave him fifty thou-sand dollars.% ~5 |" z9 j5 e7 w5 x+ P
(一位有钱的女人,帮助A先生五万元。)
! X# k5 W% q' z4 G3 b( ^7 jAfter lifelong savings, Mrs. B donated all her money to a charity organization like a fairy godmother.
: f: }" @0 S0 [1 l8 ^) K(B 太太将一生的积蓄全部捐给慈善机构。)$ k& {8 R: f5 l
有时也用复数:9 `0 v2 K+ @& Y* t' S: S
Only business women can act as fairy godmothers.4 O4 O# w: b8 ~' g3 ^
(只有商场上的女人才能提供金钱帮助他人。)
3 A) |) J9 s$ U+ Z$ N0 R1 WIn Chinese society very few fairy godmothers can be discovered." i) \: t& d! f" n
(在中国社会里,很少有钱的女人慷慨捐助。)4 N$ p2 M7 s4 V- I6 g) h

4 ?' e+ ?- J# c' G6 R5 P. s; W8 j# o& o: o" @
6)eye opener:
0 |: |6 G& |$ u5 J2 I7 h指令人瞠目的事物或使人恍然大悟的发现。也就是惊人的新发现或启示(shocking news or revela-tion), ?0 F* X: K" d
(当名词用;通常只用单数)$ q( Q) X8 C) y/ U# E- W" ?- s# b
例如:5 L7 a, l# _. _( l2 V9 d- Y
Your wonderful article on marriage was certainly an eye opener to many youngsters.5 J5 ?% }/ H$ ~0 {  J$ u6 p
(你那篇有关婚姻的好文章,使许多年轻人获得启示。)
# s' M% K' v" L& B7 b% m8 UMr. Wong's speech about U.S./ China policy seemed to be an eye opener.
% s/ o: |$ w  X7 i1 ?: u( T# M4 m* |(王先生的中美政策讲演使人恍然大悟。)
; B4 H+ h+ r# o. l, M. _The popular World Journal in North America is an eye opener for many Chinese immigrants.
& H4 x$ r* c4 u(大名鼎鼎的世界日报是北美许多中国移民惊喜的新发现。)+ i0 B7 B) u" z7 u+ F
Some American customs and ways of thinking can be an eye opener to many Chinese people.+ k, U' B, B7 E+ X
(美国一些的风俗习惯和想法,让许多老中感到惊奇。)
9 F- J; T/ u7 w1 ?& g" }, ~(7) hot dog:
( C. V2 w9 d; B指喜欢卖弄冒险的举动,或爱出锋头的惊险动作。(one who performs showy or dangerous stunts ; a show off) ( 可当名词或动词用)
( ~9 g3 r; P1 l1 j- r8 }例如:
4 p* |2 k9 Z, ]) M/ mSome young people are hot dogs behind the wheel, speeding all the time.7 g. T1 Y9 i7 b" C  u+ V* v, }
(一些年轻人开车时,常做些超速的惊险动作。)  m, e/ W9 ]6 q6 Z# ~0 L& P
(这里的 hot dogs = hot doggers)
! M+ H8 B4 U# FIn front of his girlfriend, the teenager was trying to hot dog.+ {$ R- P2 \: A
(在女友面前,年轻人做出一些卖弄技巧的花招。)
% z( b  P4 D1 W7 Q. R9 W7 M+ V0 a2 F(动词时态是:hot dogged, hot dogging)
( Y! \) \9 [& W# O! N5 H) TDuring the air force show, one of the pilots was a dan-gerous hot dogging flyer.7 z# d' ]2 R, r, m: s$ n. X9 b2 S

指做事非常卖力的人,也许为了给人良好的印象。(one who likes to work harder in order to impress others)
5 i- O! i% }7 r' H6 o(这句话是来自二次世界大战,新兵为了讨好长官而卖力工作。)
1 V: q# h, G  _2 ^. q# a. o(当名词用,可指男女)
2 J3 A& V' @4 ~7 g$ W; Q0 m例如:
5 b+ k6 Z' c( t! U$ iJohn seems an eager beaver because he always comes early and leaves late.) j& ], c, D7 U. O) B* M
(John 似乎是十分卖力的人,因为他总是来得早,走得晚。)3 V3 m+ b6 T! B% d1 z' {
Being an eager beaver, he sometimes is not well-liked by his colleagues.: O9 u- H/ Q$ r
(他做事异常卖力,有时不受同事喜欢。)
+ y: w8 b, R" S! SDoes Mr. B have a long-lasting attitude as an eager beaver?- v( r3 c5 W1 w, e: J$ a5 j2 q
(B 先生做事非常卖力,那是长久以来的态度吗?). u. s, U* d7 \
You may find some eager beavers in any organizations.
- Q, A( U1 o2 p/ ^(在任何机关里,你总会发现一些对上司竭力讨好的人。)
1 H) j- o* ^4 P1 `: \+ ^4 b(9)doubting Thomas:- t) a& {( z( d$ Y5 ^' [. E
这是指不信任所有的人,几乎是一种怀疑主义者。(one who is always doubtful toward others)% h& D' b1 V/ R4 k/ Y
(这原出于圣经,因耶稣门徒 Thomas 不信基督的复活)
/ \- o( Y+ S0 d9 @6 W1 z(当名词用)
/ C; ?/ _' |, i1 X例如:
1 G2 N+ ]1 d0 E6 kI am not trying to be a doubting Thomas about Mr. Wong's keeping promise.- @! u+ e! o) k- R% X' ]
(我不怀疑王先生的承诺。)9 ?, @2 w7 d  ~: _+ C2 M
There must have been some unpleasant experiences for Mr. B to become a doubting Thomas.1 A8 K* O7 p6 W. d$ V9 }; y
(B 先生不信任他人,也许因为有不愉快的经验所致。)% [$ ~- Y1 U7 {
也可用复数:& R: t, V' [; n" T9 c( N: A
My friends are doubting Thomases toward many Chi-nese business people.
) m1 v2 @9 Z1 |* s- p(我朋友对许多中国商人不信任。)3 Q, i2 j6 p3 u* }$ w4 n. I
If there are too many doubting Thomases in our society, people will lose confidence with one another.
6 v( J0 Y% ]8 r(假如社会上有太多的怀疑主义者,那么人与人之间的信心就会丧失。)4 r* L" r. W8 U4 x3 F
(10)dragon lady:0 l9 [6 a( X, u# u7 ~
指生气、不友善或凶险的女人。(angry, un-friendly or dangerous woman)(当名词用)
6 ?$ i, \+ D% n1 z* I例如:
6 X. V5 A  o2 Z) OThe chairman's secretary is so snoffy and nasty that she is considered a dragon lady.
9 v* q" p$ P4 O8 c4 L5 Y, k(主席的秘书,很自大,脾气差,她被视为凶恶的女人。)! A& M  C" l) C
I am sure no woman likes to be called a dragon lady.7 B( q( s  L  O
(我相信没有女人喜欢被称为凶恶的女人。)
+ W% K& Q' [: |% S0 Q" vShould your girlfriend happens to be a dragon lady, are you going to breakup with her?
& Z& J" W! O" m7 b( s(假如你的女友成了凶恶的女人,你要与她分手吗?)' E, c, S1 C. l# u5 i, n: v
也可用复数:
' l( R4 J5 M8 [: N+ f9 lThere may be many dragon ladies in our community.
- R3 o* s8 `; D/ B8 j4 C8 k! l(在我们社区里也许有不少凶女人。)% K% l) [, N% E
注:老外指凶恶男人,不用 dragon gentleman,利用英国侦探小说里的中国恶棍傅满洲(Fu Manchu)为代表
