2 o8 N* k. q# ~4 X' F8 S) vam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
3 A6 X! {: K4 {; p* g/ gconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
6 y+ X4 J* I8 oattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them" ?2 o9 p& N) a. j- G
will acquire language earlier and faster.
% l" b6 P. u5 S m P+ O* _" J9 u+ w" Z9 r/ e0 ^5 W! m
In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
: e/ ` O6 k$ M- X) s, }# U30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop+ i8 P2 M" ]" K4 O0 E* u
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or) b6 }/ T$ m7 k
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
2 T9 `* R0 r- U% a4 a4 a lmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your# [3 y# H6 \1 V& ~6 X
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.
% U# l& `& Y/ A* B# S5 O
2 f" e* j# u6 g( u, I: s8 x8 xAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common: ?/ W' i: h+ m
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
8 w( j. [- Y" a& J' t+ Ethose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.
& R, h! q. h( M! i/ W3 {5 o
9 ?4 Y" t/ C" {# |Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
* U; q! {# O3 ?/ a1 O+ Vproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
7 B& }* y4 P |/ T$ fknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
- O8 R4 [. n* |; h1 r" N3 Q4 jthose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

$ A) _6 H0 E, D" a& ?+ HFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,' j: @/ ^9 s0 x( D
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

7 e( P: F4 n, _The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done2 C: ?6 N: g& Z( s$ \
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
4 a! p) j/ p7 h4 R% G1 fis 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
) Q& q/ W! L5 e' v) i2 T$ dtake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate
/ Q, u A9 ^4 M$ Gon the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.$ D3 l* W, B7 H
As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
; Z# n! t2 @5 J' k3 a( c) aare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
) M; W5 {2 T2 ?1 c1 p0 {video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used1 j# K. j' I" w# }/ |& y
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and8 c; t! e& z q `6 v
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
9 j5 e. {3 O) m+ |# X* y' R+ Cand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
3 g! O7 P O0 ~; \# yHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
/ w0 |- o1 v9 k3 s+ Ijournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
