# G5 I5 v: X0 y9 G5 [. q5 Y6 bI am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
& X2 V6 f3 ~' @0 p0 `am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,4 ?, E1 z7 y$ O/ |" c3 e0 L2 F
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and# ?6 Z. R& H! E" p, P% U9 U
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them# J8 Q6 C1 W- D9 b
will acquire language earlier and faster.
: j& D% w8 ~$ G w& R
$ p+ a" p" c' \: \7 U& ?& a% KIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
! z5 U2 H; r$ s/ ^30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop9 s; J; R) ]0 |+ Q9 L2 R
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or& h# f' S/ d6 l: Z' `7 ^' y" y
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you! k' e* A( r6 M. B1 [$ z. _$ V" `+ L0 t
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
: O2 }3 v7 o2 j# h. Bbaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.' d, c" x9 ?! c- i; K: M- ]
% V8 A5 P9 s6 DAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common+ Y4 u4 d" w# |
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
^* r3 e$ R- c# p" [' c; y6 ^those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.
7 q z! H3 C1 b% D* Z, ]1 C9 m- M% E6 ]% V# M
Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
" j; K& M8 t- I$ U, ^2 N8 \produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
, B# w: z( ^# a# [! o2 @# }% {knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to1 k) ~" M$ S5 X0 i5 g
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,1 T; O8 c: `! L% D+ L8 c ?1 E+ C
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

$ I/ u0 ]5 T+ L. a6 mThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
5 W7 Y# u6 f& Y( \7 Hover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she1 \' B2 v: n4 c/ d( B
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will9 q# z4 h% {& r$ O# b
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate
; V( C- |, P- f# son the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
5 D& V5 z; k( @( a! c: ?As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data& v! z# w5 {1 c) f
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show) r! K* b6 ^0 u
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used/ O2 Z2 g3 s! |; x) \' I2 X+ k8 h
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and( D0 o D R% l5 T
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,8 Q6 s8 Q1 @$ y# n) s) _
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of d- x, Y) l9 x; D4 l$ T2 ~2 r
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
1 f6 ~' Q; J/ ]- }* {8 I7 Z x7 sjournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child6 I" [: H- v7 V7 r
and the parents participating in this study.
