& I9 q/ \5 q. M l dI am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I! Y3 s' Z0 {8 F8 K
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,% o6 e6 _! H" w z: p
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
* H+ I2 c; |; @: `attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
' x5 n+ ~1 G2 h7 M, U6 S3 ?% wwill acquire language earlier and faster.7 Z4 @3 d7 O7 ^: n6 l# ?( e% x
8 L; `! `0 X0 u3 XIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
: p) u6 u5 E$ D8 y9 N/ @8 E- G30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
8 \5 `& F2 n0 L& G) \, G- Cvideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
- V9 D) l1 z* e/ Rsimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
. c& C, H- I8 R( Dmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your! d) p3 ^% E/ Y" X: W/ L2 |. y
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.
q- G/ d# u/ S( \( h3 p8 y& H1 }& i; h: E
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
7 g D/ B: D$ @: N8 _behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and! }1 ^3 J. J: I, d" f: e+ w; l/ C4 [
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.5 {8 d _! D: S- z
( c3 U$ `7 l ?! E0 c
Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously: z# n. V" D8 k/ @+ A. E
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby6 n. \6 i' s" F, S5 l& v* J( f) C2 x
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
b; y0 m/ K7 \4 }" Wthose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,: F% [- ]) l+ A
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.1 Q) d n8 f5 L- f1 t6 x0 X( K0 I! a5 j

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
2 d) S' L' I, p8 y! Bover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
1 J2 k. r, E; o. l# P: [! mis 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
/ F9 i* ?# V. N, w3 d7 Wtake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate
- n2 P8 R) A+ K4 don the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.7 m. C# f0 W* B* D4 u0 O
As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data% {" ~- e4 r; _, n R" S
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show5 I2 H0 ~& _3 D ^
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used( ?8 `: |. b( h
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
( ^; I( c9 g' E/ m* Idestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,. g: |4 U* J$ @5 W( l$ S, ?5 ]
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
, t* i9 G) l- B4 e" x6 g2 f. D# ~ xHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific/ m2 p7 A2 U8 r5 l
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child( x$ _. U9 M$ S2 S; O `+ }
and the parents participating in this study.
