I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I7 p3 z0 a0 o4 }
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,+ R7 B% m6 W; O! u- D
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and/ o9 k J" } m% g5 D2 G
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
$ k2 a- ?7 Z% ewill acquire language earlier and faster.
) H# E2 }4 x" e8 \+ t7 K
9 F: y: l5 D" W% T& ~9 J- M/ VIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
- M, w) c: q' I: D30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop0 I. G. q0 |6 r4 j% f* M
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
# ^0 W0 Q+ u2 X) I) F" }simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you8 C- X- d2 }$ j& t
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your6 v, o2 G8 H- Y+ a) e* P9 N
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.
% O' A& I! S" W6 p( t; k& m0 V/ W+ G3 h1 a; E+ D
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
) f7 {0 G# N2 Z0 j R3 ebehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
3 T; ?! K8 a6 H: Dthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.
/ k8 S# q* Z: x, L! \: F! p k+ I7 p
Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously0 q/ ?* d: n5 R6 s' p& ^# t, v; x0 N
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby2 {, ~3 F5 i, ~4 f$ B, A7 @
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to h( z* z" w( A6 H$ V+ B
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.# P6 a8 Q2 p9 W2 ] s
t& f! x- U3 u" C4 kFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
( B' ?4 Y4 l- `the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.$ b) @7 o. `: M$ A; }0 X3 S
/ w5 v8 [: q- JThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done/ |! J4 e5 v2 v, @$ q4 T- Y+ C
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she+ W* l% o. G8 O3 ]6 b2 o4 V
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
7 P5 o- r( d" N1 c/ Mtake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate3 |+ Y. T" S8 v6 I
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.

+ e4 G$ e9 _) F6 Vare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show7 k5 [! o/ Z) M6 @' }7 s
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used) w5 w1 |" t* ]- J" H
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
3 s+ X. G3 x; {3 f O* Zdestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,# r0 u4 |! j' o7 B# {4 @
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
# `3 {! j( t0 fHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific$ n Z- \* h1 M7 m' { r
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child! L+ w) ?9 L1 {1 A% x. o
and the parents participating in this study.
