I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
" L H. F k2 Y O! u8 ?# a% r: cam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
7 N4 u6 X" h% M Bconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and# ?- g9 E% k6 l6 f( | O( \
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
4 e: g% [/ A. _" _. s3 |0 M1 ~7 g/ dwill acquire language earlier and faster.

* y. }( k" v" P5 g A5 d7 Q o8 OIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately! j- R) |; G2 ` `! g' H
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop2 D- q$ f1 Y9 v" a( q- F
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or* \" t6 z' E' T9 S) ]' O
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you8 n% Y5 R; F6 A8 a* @
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
( c! I8 k# `4 J* z- v1 r8 Q" pbaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.

- d, Q: H3 @/ Z# a; aAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common/ l0 Q; o$ U. i2 w% ?: b! i0 h
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and# t; H# m+ ?- p; t" @$ m
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.0 y, `! Q B2 W- h; i j8 A% q! T
7 o# `6 m8 i. z5 e. _/ S
Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously4 @, L; Y( i9 q# U6 i3 p( }
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby# V, {; ~1 p. C
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
- g M' \) G1 A# z) g- V& a! _those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.3 x2 D, ?. f( k
- ^8 V6 `, l: T/ G, q' {Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,& h: g1 N! v! f9 Y q
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.( }0 w; S/ B$ b% M

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
& C! y' [6 e _9 h7 D) V# {/ uover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
4 l* G6 h6 B8 C4 D( S6 g, zis 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will- G% F! U: p* Z4 o8 s
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data" F, ?. t) m0 c4 q
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
' G' v a5 O6 I+ dvideo clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used6 ?1 h! g0 |0 X9 C" y( N* N
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
" H7 M' C2 [; W. L, ^# n7 U$ Adestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,4 k u6 S' w6 s7 s, S
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of: T( A( k; H" m
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
