I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I* V& I7 {3 d1 Y4 _1 _( b/ t
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,' r4 S& q' w" S& P8 T
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
! P3 U3 R x) L4 [attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them) N7 p# v; l7 ^ Y1 i. m
will acquire language earlier and faster.# `, |+ Y `8 h) ^$ f
( |, U$ B' ?$ s1 Q4 j- R' r. VIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately; B! ^! k% y A6 I, L" `
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop; w, d' m7 H8 v) p9 ^' O; T& b
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or* w' L- z7 f: ]" z- ~8 T h
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
' ~1 ]0 R! K" p6 l6 @2 Y, [may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your/ Y* |# }: |2 F+ I0 Q% j3 b! ^
