I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
( i5 B% R2 C+ e" t' ?: sam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
2 u, K+ w" ?! E$ ]* yconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
, k& i6 v; z; Q% p, m! A4 `attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them/ e- @8 X+ E1 \9 \$ b! ?* y" S
will acquire language earlier and faster.
& { N/ }" F _" t+ G* c
/ X2 Q; U5 h( s9 kIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
% G% G$ P# u7 D. A30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop/ M/ r, W. r! e+ }3 x7 |$ i( b9 r
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or2 P# { J: y2 Q. U' |+ @
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you- B8 k8 V) W; s9 \$ w6 g
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
, ~& R' o4 c. K: _# A" J' F0 ]baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.
0 Z3 m( F' X6 R3 b4 E# d# D: {2 s& }- g; _( K5 X: A X n6 X
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
' U& i8 U9 N2 J7 K& ]1 R5 V5 rbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
3 m9 [2 |4 O0 `3 ?5 Wthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.: p {3 u, j k/ A
0 @3 Z: O& }; U0 W( |5 bStarting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously Y; s0 I/ u+ P9 |
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby: c5 G# C, @3 ^1 t# F6 S& e( P' [
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
) s- R' V) H. i: E* ?6 sthose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.; G0 H/ |0 l. p6 i b2 F" a6 w \% n

Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,1 J: }2 \$ \' x; Q9 p. z$ y
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done0 t* \' N: Q, L" O7 Y
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she1 V! w, F8 E5 q3 d: K! S
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
v [; \5 I9 k8 Otake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate6 X& j: w: B# l! X& m0 a
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.1 H+ |, l. {$ U" L2 L' X
As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
( ^" _, {, O8 c2 a/ sare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show0 s" a- l, q( {, D) f* C. a+ z
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used* ~3 J& K' d7 ~$ M2 f
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
6 G7 i7 f ~! q6 F ~4 f9 Pdestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,* z, L9 N, j6 H- ^
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of# l1 ~- w, ]0 X3 m R( \
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
