I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
, k2 O2 |. G9 `: S, }& o8 Xam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
5 [# g% n! w4 Nconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and3 ~/ q& M7 R1 A! m5 A( q
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
( ^- E% d; P5 k& C3 C, j% |will acquire language earlier and faster.
0 q) f0 k8 O% S: v3 r9 P# D/ _6 H6 s* n- m; G$ B
In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately4 l; p/ m/ I* |( ?* w3 I2 B' x! @/ a
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
7 a: A3 s# e$ q/ ~& j, k4 Z$ a0 j) C' }videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
6 Q6 C6 ^9 `( S; usimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you0 P% k9 m' E- x& q& w; ^) Q8 d
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your# J6 H, T- l2 a
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.
: S1 b9 C8 v- c% P0 S# f/ ~' O9 Y2 M& ?. W& }9 S
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
. b' m* A2 d. M0 H/ C, f* @' t Wbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and* s6 h1 i5 z8 R. c9 ~$ w
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.
% M7 L/ a; o/ L' \6 C- ]* H1 b3 ]( r' z* U) t1 {
Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
1 z, X/ O" F c" k$ S% d4 fproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
" o n9 g5 o8 M% k! s% B! c; |knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
+ n/ X% ^* Z, h4 ~those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

1 A7 U# m _: e' M- L/ O$ i! u6 D! u( VFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,8 j1 }, q9 X. q H+ f
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.# n- [& i5 l- Q2 u
- W3 G. @( K9 e$ D5 |; J, F
The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done6 W: j0 ?3 q4 w4 I1 f9 c
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
# [# I( l' X/ R% \+ I5 f0 Iis 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will5 A1 n! I* C1 y6 d3 \
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate
. g! V* w0 l5 ` \% @7 Eon the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
4 e. i- d# t7 U5 ~As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data. Z& W% W; c! Q7 W/ E( B
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show/ }7 W" @' r0 `2 d" ]0 P I
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used0 d' V2 B, s2 }6 U2 i& C
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and) i" x# e5 ]) V: S, Z4 ]7 k- X8 ]
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
% i7 @. B x l6 Mand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of; |. m- S. Q- m X* f7 C8 i
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific# z! q/ N: u, w, z0 z; S: Q: `7 Z6 d
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child) f# Z: M2 d0 b; T( t8 r8 E
and the parents participating in this study.
