am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
5 l- I/ j' N" bconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
) A/ m2 ~: \# r- `' O" nattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them: _0 I4 x2 Y5 l' |
will acquire language earlier and faster.

In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately+ { ], [8 t( g0 Q1 ]
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
# E( f4 K0 `5 P h% K cvideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or- b2 O# w0 d. d: f8 D C
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
) O/ q6 @4 N. y6 F# A) c1 U1 Zmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
! O) R+ M, ?/ b/ L' ababy starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.
: A* Z) n" ^2 Q+ c3 o' M" ^) }( g2 z L3 T' t8 e4 d
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common- @* y& a- Q! V( n. ~8 H! x
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and% m; Z) s% i* m* @) v8 C
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

1 g3 J# \) o) e! C: ?1 a5 a) SStarting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
' ~$ w' b2 E9 o# k1 U8 ~produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby' ?$ J, D2 L8 ?( k
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
* P; Y6 y0 l3 W$ a& k Y. }2 R3 x7 C3 @those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
D1 N9 z& W( J" x2 E+ M: jthe child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done0 H4 _/ d( Q4 k! M/ I: l K
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she6 h8 R$ p8 R/ q# \$ N
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will1 `1 v2 a6 i$ I+ O' V6 t7 D- u1 M
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate5 q5 S* e0 X; u
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.8 q0 F! P \) \# h$ c) \: k* @9 e4 Z
As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
; ^- B& }, X7 c/ lare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
9 O7 d* J9 ?( avideo clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used2 H2 |- a% S. O* W ^4 ?- o
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
) l/ a# r! e" vdestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
1 x! N9 ]* O6 P& Band teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of ~# S+ [4 E5 T8 ]
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific, C4 x" S, C$ [% R+ G
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child- y, u) b# R9 I* e3 a* J
