I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
0 B$ U# y1 G" {6 ~am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,& ^: n% V1 z1 x! A Y
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
' M" O2 O0 @3 }% t2 Dattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
7 _! w; b. D) t: Z! Q. C- qwill acquire language earlier and faster.( B. Z4 {% u& X9 F" c2 T
" I2 ?. q) N5 T/ b, c. q# f* W
In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
7 n" A$ D& R+ ?* b! |30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
+ M) i, _6 ^6 k; x3 p+ M5 _videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
; l \5 i. \; Z4 P, D4 e E6 Vsimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
% f5 o/ e, s3 \. x0 a, amay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
8 S# e3 L2 F" b8 sbaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.

$ J }9 W! o6 m7 o6 c/ V* p' n9 {At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common; H% h& t& [6 D4 q0 x
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
7 }; ^5 f8 E1 N" E+ }( v& Xthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.* p5 |" |" Z! Q, L
/ P/ m- t8 L" FStarting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously$ t2 f# F5 j3 `% t/ c
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
- ?" B8 s4 ?9 w+ \; y! W- K1 rknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to$ @) Q$ \. n* A0 ^3 P( e& B) ]
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.9 @0 G. g& l! \7 K

Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this," U/ f& F# u5 Q* w7 W0 H
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects., |6 n, T4 _* q. {* B' a8 ~
/ B! x( B/ R/ O9 |) T0 Z% l" h
The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
( x5 l) T0 m- r+ N% i+ a3 u3 Z1 cover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
& }, V2 W- _* t- |: M: {is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
3 l$ C W6 G' x+ R# C' ?take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate/ }9 Y ~& i7 @- b0 f! |& y" \
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
7 s" q7 o' r% k! H/ ^ I+ qAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data1 l8 T0 r+ V+ C
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show( E* W7 h4 Y" S4 H: s
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used. j. T: L; y$ V# b/ n
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and# ]7 I: E7 V) h# U4 z( f# u
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
& Q7 `# I3 h+ _: M/ }8 a: Hand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of) s) q4 Y' r' k* c% y* T
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific3 L% c1 b1 h8 Y) v g: z
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
