3 s; r% k9 d' d5 i: b- d2 sI am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
- X7 W/ Y% I( C0 \am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
0 n) k7 w; w8 ~, r6 ~( t, {concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and3 {5 F" Z- t9 w
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them- s5 t" c0 S u4 [: l3 f4 F
will acquire language earlier and faster.$ S$ y! F/ A, x% B- \# B9 K
9 {) H7 l- j. H! }: l# P* dIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately+ l( E* ?4 R, G
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop. g4 j( G7 @2 ?2 l! R8 ?6 Y
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
- z# [3 ~1 w% t, Csimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
' _* `8 _4 \1 a; ?" Zmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
0 W" U) n* I( n* ebaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.
* u' @0 P% ^) Z( j! z; |+ O @* I) Y" U
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common6 P' j/ J+ y( ^% N) @6 S0 l
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and& G% ~3 c5 ^) V7 ?7 h1 z
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.6 M/ C9 ]3 m# K! O9 u
( E7 X: o2 c% S0 {: d4 pStarting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously, K3 X& T4 Y5 s5 x0 z/ f. ^
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby! O# L5 w$ Q/ F i9 F
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
2 D) w% j) R/ K9 G) J/ @4 Pthose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
% I' x! k6 P' r3 Hover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
$ [3 o9 m& R5 F" Jis 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will0 Z p) d( Y; Z# b) h/ I
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate
3 ]2 }% o% W% Oon the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
. m3 p+ F3 Z: u5 hAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
9 ?+ W# \7 v# w" }5 f9 j9 ~! d8 `are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
3 j+ k& {$ S0 p ]video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
# B' J/ g" g4 o. u2 `( m( |, P1 xin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and; u& l6 Z y5 Y ]1 P& }
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,# {4 \+ H$ w- _2 x( e. {
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of9 s( k0 j, d0 T, z: E9 o6 }1 r
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
* _$ U- b5 ^6 s8 E8 bjournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
