I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I' x" K& x$ X( F" D8 @/ X" q
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
, ^$ g9 E% u* ^; F" Econcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and: C1 P1 g7 W* }- Y
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
% E- R0 @, E& f2 f& x% ^will acquire language earlier and faster.

/ Y* U$ V: x/ o( ^ U& i8 Z4 aIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
: B# b2 z9 B8 K! M30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
: ~- e; F# x0 bvideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
6 `9 h- D6 S" A. h5 B8 bsimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
; ^' d6 `1 y+ Q# t) zmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your! N8 h9 v0 B M2 {" }
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.

j9 x& F$ Z0 z9 ?1 N. JAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common- n% I/ b+ ]! S

those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.' |5 p4 f4 G) X# |1 [

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously, W% V1 D3 r1 Y4 u4 h4 M
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby2 }- M. [- i& A9 i
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to8 X2 z; q; \" j' S

Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
