am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,* V" M' A% {2 B) {$ Q5 {# {0 y5 M2 u6 Z( g
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and: R; n/ c+ x' q% }$ _8 g, S1 @* Y
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
: z$ j/ G6 S& `/ ?2 J3 J; [' c; Hwill acquire language earlier and faster.6 @0 a2 ]0 \7 A" p- o
9 f! o# k% ~8 T E+ ?7 Q( B
In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately7 m2 y0 G; r x: i- i1 V$ g6 |
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
$ e9 b" m1 x* J4 \7 X2 l( ovideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or( g* v3 \. t9 d3 s1 M- ]
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you: k- Q- Z1 U& i6 Q7 O; Y
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
# U! ^9 b4 z2 q0 B& O5 o) d$ hbaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.# v1 W( n2 |4 ]' E/ Z# r
& U7 ^. r* { @7 Z7 S: A/ x
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
. S8 ^4 r8 M8 C. N) @behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and1 r' T7 e5 E2 M( F% D& B j
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.
9 _* t6 ^! N. L+ _& F6 X( z9 [. Z3 x3 f( p% O% N4 N
Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously( q" x' J) |; F
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby* D5 L4 |) \2 {0 R
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
4 ^& h. Q% ?0 _6 @those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

7 c' v$ `! G- xFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,9 C5 v; U- M% D- z
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

: O6 V( J+ z3 x, o! s' a) y* E/ bThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
1 H! c0 w ~( q( N/ e$ ?over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she7 a8 d+ o- n W* }# z" X" e: S
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
n0 z- `8 r/ g h v4 Ktake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate. H( f: ~8 o8 U! r, p0 o7 e
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
- Q# x( @4 j VAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data6 J* q0 ]8 w+ ^5 g. n, E/ t+ I
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show5 C, g7 y' D3 a8 e2 f7 z
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
% w0 x2 `% E- ]2 Ein the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and4 ?' e5 Q) q: |3 @/ O" e5 b( Q- h
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,9 X" n) V o5 E2 \/ A8 O+ `) L* G7 k
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
; H# W+ k6 u" s- ?: [) wHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific) X( \/ m$ ? H4 t8 i
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child! n+ D7 Z( v6 y8 T' _# `
