I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
! ^* ^; c+ Q. K/ mam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,( G* Q+ y. }! ^& @5 `: p4 B. \2 R' n
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
1 ~3 x) j" p$ Nattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
% m0 \, l. s: T. ywill acquire language earlier and faster.
% Y+ V( C' i0 M" e# c7 a
$ P% ^, Q3 |- NIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately# Y) T% n3 ~) v$ q' u2 B* u
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
9 B7 o) G0 c7 f4 ]- evideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
5 u4 P2 Y1 J+ T# h, ]( lsimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
# S8 x! V% u+ n6 c D% g# n# Nmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
: t. w9 {4 x! `5 Cbaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.
8 D8 L! f. | A+ f5 r* q+ g( m# s1 ~$ p; |; O6 G( v& d/ W7 T
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
! J7 ]$ P- l" ~- ^% \1 K2 Vbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
; K4 M {6 z; L8 p! Q- E' }those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.# R. U$ x+ H" X8 Z7 M+ {
4 v s" k% c/ w/ ^: y# a
Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
! q& R9 h6 W t$ _ P; \produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby. c5 o9 ^) |0 r9 I+ R; S, B/ h
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to7 D3 ]- q3 i7 I' S
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,, e0 k* ~* x! g; a' l
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.. Z) p4 @- @& U) }5 n, s' q
; q, L" N" V4 _% k' n. cThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
5 x3 P/ U* J$ B/ Kover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
5 u7 J/ s( s5 u: h$ [is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
+ F& Y) ]' @) e8 itake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate
! w/ h# a1 [4 k! q# ion the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
9 x. u- Z& ?7 }As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
c1 R; a! _8 w, N2 }% y- tare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show" v4 J1 d* m6 X
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
: U1 f6 h/ V( Rin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and' K7 }/ D0 Z5 ]+ [1 |
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
$ D9 x$ A7 X2 z. q" Y/ C% m2 Eand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of6 ]/ C* _6 F$ l# g( x$ q
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific6 r% p, \5 r/ {& H3 e9 X
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child7 U" ~3 u- f3 g& ~! R+ C
and the parents participating in this study.
