am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,6 ^9 l; W$ d: p4 j8 h
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
/ ]) q: a' J/ t* G R: C$ Rattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
& F! w% _& a2 l0 E8 \/ [will acquire language earlier and faster.$ W2 X; E9 ~0 j$ Y4 |* H+ Y& |
* V" `6 p% V9 |6 Q2 y. y1 jIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
( x4 O* x+ {% [" g30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
& r% J" ^7 x1 f2 K. i- q0 O- j1 Vvideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
+ e% u9 y1 K7 A6 i3 z2 vsimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
) f3 a+ c3 d5 b- E! `may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your7 t' [, |- I! W3 y. \
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.

At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
! T, u1 L* w7 u& k- v8 n- i) jbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
: I. p0 p" x0 Z, a1 I) _/ S- M+ O- Zthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes., w) M/ \3 {+ M! @$ j
P. y: C( G) @9 A; yStarting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
2 ^; O3 h( f0 B: ^* x( iproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
a/ M+ U3 {4 I9 sknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to+ k) U& B* f z# W# \! |
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes., l! R+ m9 p2 w
1 B4 q% G' N) l% k5 |, V' P/ f+ g0 _% x( ?Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,$ p3 O4 Q9 {. \. J- u9 w
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.. z( k( ?5 R) ]1 q' }6 x& B" F; Q
" o% i2 P5 U. I! r) T, o* NThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
5 \& F4 _2 h z; nover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
! p& z% {9 b# b! ~is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will/ u' z) Q# v8 d& l1 ]4 M! r
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate& f& T4 H7 t0 g5 F
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.7 q- G4 g* w" Y
As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data" U" D/ k$ k7 A
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show' S- y; \+ a+ J9 X
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
+ t2 c- m, ^' ]% a0 Xin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
) |' }2 _0 A7 N4 `. D9 d5 udestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,- [8 r' ~4 U7 L5 H8 ?" v" Q6 i
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
& V j) x! f/ C$ k! iHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
( m% [3 ?% z' `# hjournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child0 T+ p8 I+ W6 M
