I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
6 q/ c, k& A9 y" bam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,' Q* J) \8 X6 R Q+ H6 W
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
8 v( i% ]3 y! z2 |+ o6 `attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them! R# c/ x9 a( v+ E- P
will acquire language earlier and faster.: Y6 n e3 c, T

In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately4 n0 j+ O5 S0 @) Z1 W
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
* ] ~6 l. S( y9 P5 Z7 A1 Uvideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or9 d0 W& }+ O0 B( I* P( n3 x4 Z1 S
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
1 ~) t. L& z6 b9 J" j2 E9 {may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
( F! K; q& o) L+ T9 Wbaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used./ f1 ?* k" D3 e8 s O' E' \
/ I, M! F3 o; s! OAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common; [' N/ w y+ G
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
/ E9 L& L$ D; W8 U1 J8 nthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.' h8 a- b# F8 S8 ?: Q. R4 N" a& `4 ^

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
9 a) ?+ ^$ i& C$ s& z5 O, R9 ]produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby9 g5 ~6 A: t3 S4 D! c
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
. c) s8 h5 w9 f- X8 Fthose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes." P3 u" P1 h* W+ Z

Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,9 w& { x: F5 s/ x& l0 ~
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

: Q! @* g' l% d1 eThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
. s1 [) h c" k* ^" B) n+ A gover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
2 O/ W, \ _1 B9 z3 j7 ris 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will8 K! o3 ~, Y& L$ {% C, D
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data6 H. D9 W( Z. D2 w/ @
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show2 Z; M4 H# H& m( c* ^" n
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
+ P/ ^" B9 s9 [* T- ]3 Oin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
\/ r" y2 ^& t Q3 C$ F/ Edestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,8 L" D7 s3 C6 c' q8 i ?) d$ [, P
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
' i$ z$ j0 M5 x- |( d: ~Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific* G- z' R9 ~2 T) [$ W
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
