I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I; Z9 q) g6 a) H& Z$ k
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
- A+ @0 B/ Q2 }6 Rconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and; v, }1 ^) ^: i8 Z7 k, Z
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them ^; O) ^2 F9 r& @, J
will acquire language earlier and faster.9 q4 X, g5 Z0 r" ~! ?2 h

In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately7 H, ? J- }, j" E0 @
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop) _% P: c5 {; I# t
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
# T' K( B3 r$ J y2 usimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you: r! [4 u7 E( ^3 G# a! a
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your7 d2 h6 ~) y6 Z
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.' E, y6 \: e) ?3 O" i8 w: _
8 A G" Y6 Y) N# WAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
6 i5 u! [* L. L. C4 P6 Tbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
) t+ h* z8 z" Z5 K0 e( c9 rthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously! Y$ h4 s. F6 [. a4 f
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby5 h( V$ e( Y4 t- d" G) @
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
& {$ D; r; c3 z( H; c/ i1 @ Ithose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.
! f. P+ y$ f" l* C k& e; l& h" U9 w O9 E; z. x/ H+ v, B
Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
" I" f" Z) K* W. y. | e+ f( D) Kthe child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

: Q5 Y$ p1 s0 e* o: _The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done+ U! j2 f; D" |6 D( s5 `. b+ I
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she) B3 E5 M: S2 z' `
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
7 b1 L! N& e7 N/ f% g* _take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data7 G1 O0 d/ p* G* ]* a( @2 j( f
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show5 t/ r* D' s, M5 b+ ^
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
& H, R4 d0 }+ y3 R0 x4 Jin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
6 t% f. L5 I3 U2 vdestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,+ {5 A+ y) Y1 s# s
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of9 w) U: Q9 d- d; S$ `! Y9 J
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
" W3 X7 D- ]8 K6 Bjournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
