I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I) H3 }% a% j8 R% B
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,4 K! }4 z" x6 `2 ?1 y" i+ E* I- n
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
2 i8 L9 e4 a$ H4 Wattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them4 _/ q H- T' @
will acquire language earlier and faster.2 k; L7 K0 W3 U. Q

In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
% _! q( i5 X1 z/ b& D- l. J' l, R, G30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop( m% O8 o/ k! i0 N% M" y" q2 Y
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or2 [' D/ U- M# y7 o
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you4 d9 N @* c! a G0 t
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
9 g, W p2 ?6 s4 O% Obaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.
$ |9 s! d% q' N, g! n5 P
. D" o5 k% s8 P fAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common3 B. W) q/ d6 m& u5 }
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and {* |3 L5 y* d; m
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
4 I7 t3 B8 a( r9 `( ]produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
8 \$ F# M6 H/ P7 b0 r$ R# uknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to: a1 q, h# V: _' T, I ]% p# \" R
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.7 e0 R3 I2 c, g+ c
& x$ `! d. \, r* {. V
Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,: q j* C7 q+ F& p4 ?- G8 H1 Y
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.) i' s! a) ]' v* f( B+ [
" _# X- P! E j2 g9 q( hThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
$ \( M$ l7 e( J0 Iover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she- y* q) I4 d/ f: k, V" w
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will' U( L4 u% Q' c2 x: f
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate" {: l& Q: Q/ R; |. L7 o

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data' f1 q! }' c: u$ m4 l
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
6 G. W2 A0 s) l8 J8 Z" ovideo clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used. k/ D' B& H/ E/ E% `4 j; N' V, `/ x
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and5 X: a$ p; w1 l& S# U
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
( {/ w3 U& j8 ~6 B8 c2 q6 cand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
5 X0 w% P/ l/ \3 RHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
0 o& z4 u' S, Rjournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child, K* H! L0 y& F5 [8 z+ K6 h
and the parents participating in this study.
