I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
6 ]( Z; v2 `1 @! {2 a# P7 }am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,1 ^3 C- v1 f& f! D9 }
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and0 P/ b( j1 s. X& Z6 j ?
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
2 s, R8 D* I0 bwill acquire language earlier and faster.
+ D! w9 g$ \. L3 ]9 M$ v
/ u* R7 F9 Y* ^, [8 m- w/ Q0 MIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
1 b2 M* s; M( L) {: `8 R30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
8 R# D% Y6 x: w+ [# Evideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or# P% ? O5 t7 {5 B
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
' G2 L" g7 C+ f5 e Gmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your) J% K7 E) g# x8 \% M
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.
* U% c' R5 R# X/ U. _8 {, ~3 W u2 r- y' W( T( T+ T
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common1 w2 D1 B' h! b! E) n5 N& ]* b
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and5 [% p Q4 _7 X9 `* h9 |" U2 g
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.# r0 b# H a3 }
$ t) s7 I& l! H) ~7 ^/ Y! Z0 F$ q8 ~Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously% A) d0 w- V' L% Y" R5 ] }
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby3 Q m: U$ [4 m3 w+ e( @
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to' F) c. R* |3 D$ q; U$ @# e D
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes., x. F6 R" e0 w1 p! A& L+ J
& Y1 u) j' ]( n8 M" xFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,8 C1 @* M6 k! \( h3 g
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

2 F o1 D$ R6 U0 O1 A& u' IThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
: u3 C: n- p! l! ]over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
& I* v, q8 R; J* L! q! N, w) yis 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will5 a) w, f: }0 M# [8 c
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate
/ w+ Q( _5 c! B" X- O6 g' ^- Zon the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
F p. Z$ X. K8 q$ H3 ZAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
. K* n U6 V' @+ h) Kare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
7 t# n: S) P; O( c% N6 p; r* ]7 @3 Svideo clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used* o. l1 z7 |4 B
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
! ~( N T% H+ a' Z5 E+ Qdestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
6 F7 B: j/ N, I6 l3 R$ q0 _and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
, V2 c' c0 o6 [0 Y# \$ ], M8 K/ MHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific

and the parents participating in this study.
