3 Q9 Y- B" l P( nI am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I# M2 d, y" ^$ p! y7 R7 _% u
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,. N: k; }( e4 O1 q: E9 K* U
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and0 L5 k- @. D( w8 N+ E
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
* p9 m7 y1 H5 C$ [0 y, Pwill acquire language earlier and faster." D2 a* g! _' N0 J9 n/ z; e
! ~0 B1 X [7 G/ j! U) l* X, v: \In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
9 ]: ^) c) K* W30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
5 f' v$ h! Q) C5 E8 V1 b% j! Cvideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
* [3 Y }. ?2 jsimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you+ Y4 X: T- J! W4 f# T4 M) H
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your/ D$ B) P- h; t3 l& w! v
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.: {% Y' z7 ] d' R- z" t
! \8 _ r$ A3 }2 V- e0 Y8 u
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common( t9 A' a0 l- I% n) G- S
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and4 ]8 w1 J' t, S* ~- [8 r% _' e! s8 X
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

- @0 B8 i8 J# k5 L! @+ XStarting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously3 c) r1 d; A" _& Z: |* |
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby: q5 g# f+ J. o9 ^5 C6 ^/ p* w
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to+ u6 _( J( B! u6 f6 \. g( S- ~3 b
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes." |* c9 ~% {! o) z9 Z0 w9 f
' Y4 }* k0 `9 J, @/ q* ]; u3 oFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,

* C9 u) v" s. `" ]% t# O) C' |The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done) e, e- i6 w8 S2 Y2 }
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she5 J! u* @: d! F- H
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will5 N7 t/ e, B6 B( T \; v& j2 B
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
& u; b1 b1 K3 B2 ? Yare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show1 M* `3 X8 M8 O' i q/ ?
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used6 E: M& C9 j6 ~/ W
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
: J9 C0 |6 }- n( adestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,# `2 }$ U9 x3 f L5 K- m( a
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of+ {1 G' E& K; ^. w8 L* |) n
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific* i- v" G5 R4 ?' `" [) z
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child1 O' c7 g7 d! g- S7 l/ k" s
