I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I" b" u9 Y( f: r5 a* ]9 K" t: X
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,0 h) @* ]7 h: u% C- n* H8 }
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
2 e2 Z0 F% [3 T# S: Z) E Y, Oattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them; @. ?2 x0 d" \" d* `
will acquire language earlier and faster.
0 L8 P) s H( i5 G3 `% ]- ]' j- q2 D; G6 D* w* H
In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
) M; J9 R! o; Z5 y30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
, K! o% T) s" C7 @" ]videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
: b7 P, A2 z! U3 Q( \% K3 T; \simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you0 G+ m( h4 U; Z6 h& a
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your# N$ g& @6 s3 V0 E1 X
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.5 @$ _: X% U' | i4 n0 a# I
+ U- u3 A. D! i8 }7 _
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
4 v, d0 J1 s4 jbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and' A: M' p6 x# L& a
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.
$ {; v; W# H `9 I* h. B. C5 H9 B( i: b0 O8 P; d' c/ a+ N: g) f
Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously! q: ~: T" q# `. y- B1 \8 b
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby1 |1 w0 m6 W u' A, d0 z! L, {
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
- e; I8 D% R+ z$ g# [, z0 @those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

5 `' K* i1 _ }1 d7 c- z8 mFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
# s6 L+ O9 K7 m* u$ l8 D4 Othe child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

+ S' z ]# @; v- c6 rThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done7 H Z! M" A+ n# d; N7 z
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
1 J9 l. M: Q* `9 fis 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
+ w* K. B: _& Z8 N. ntake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate0 R1 y6 f6 f# {( O. L1 O
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.6 h# R2 i* s; s9 I
As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data6 v, A: x( F' a% v. O2 y! K: J6 Y
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
/ c+ L+ j8 ?: ~9 _video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used5 U7 e# `; W z4 Q' `2 ?0 W
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
5 s! {1 Z6 |6 I( J0 gdestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
( X. y% }! c0 W* Z# l a q. Xand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
( x, w: ~0 d2 c8 F# v% qHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
! U1 l3 ?8 ?, c4 p- r0 i2 ujournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child# s8 E. [+ o. a& y& O
