# i s# @9 e3 TI am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
- G- D0 {% f) H9 F, O3 Pam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,, y) w+ j, Z7 I5 H& ` }0 x
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and( C. q+ `2 c0 S# M+ U
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
- v7 o; T- H6 e0 Lwill acquire language earlier and faster.
# C" D3 z( t: O& f: X
; Y% m* ~6 Z5 C; @) FIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately6 u8 n+ _2 ?3 t* y# J6 S
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop: a# `/ F5 w: O
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
% i' C7 l0 n8 T4 h; \simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you7 g# p5 w5 d; w( B, h ?5 }" f# N$ Z
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your0 s' }( d7 ^: c b" b
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.3 \' J) v+ U! s; g6 Y
% x. Z4 |# q( B5 i% p s' G- ^* {0 T
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common ^+ ]9 {7 w8 V- ~2 I" w. ^
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and8 f: i. q% c4 j" M
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.# }1 y) w. P) r! ~& h
7 a) {4 k. m9 K* m( B S. oStarting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
/ F4 B( H7 o4 I* A/ j2 Q* X, n7 X$ Dproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
7 ]. {. k% `# |; h) Mknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to* a& N N- _5 ~* l) `; k* l) w
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.+ Z0 T S: D1 p$ v% ?, j
3 q& |/ J' S3 u( QFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,7 N1 a) J+ l. Z9 \
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

: Q. \1 s, T3 m/ c, c* } u' S8 SThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done+ h8 b0 p2 |: q3 s3 ^- W; \
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
# P0 G0 L- K/ c$ l, ^. |; Dis 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will( c0 s4 o5 c, H: W; b
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate% @5 ~( H! r# ~- O% _' X
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.2 l% E: V& e! j7 h8 |6 _0 V7 j2 [
As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data+ \# O& ?, g2 G- j; P% |7 l
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show) r, V3 t5 l& C1 W
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
0 [5 K, F$ c6 {) Din the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
+ m! k, [, B! B1 w2 L/ Fdestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
* B9 c" a1 }4 M, iand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of* A, u5 W% c3 N
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
, @# @7 @1 t- f1 o# i8 |- yjournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child7 [6 j9 ?/ v2 z& s
and the parents participating in this study.
