Dear Parent or Guardian,
* h( j5 g: r3 q0 y1 FI am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I8 V* |$ I8 w. V3 | g5 i% D$ V
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
! B3 F2 D# o! @8 g: a0 X: oconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and2 e! e0 V) J' c D; {1 r
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
7 f% {( J* m! F9 Kwill acquire language earlier and faster./ X3 G9 K2 g+ [- W7 O6 g
" [2 T1 ~4 d6 Z4 ?2 gIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately

simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
& ~- U- i3 }$ `; Mmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your( q- V3 O2 B/ H5 O8 a
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.7 i; A+ s+ I3 J/ M6 _! f

behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously5 Z& ^! [6 q; }4 g q+ q8 L+ e
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby' x D* W A; G, W. f3 v
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
