* u" g2 C7 Z8 O6 R! h N$ L7 Nam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,# K9 A5 c; S+ _' `
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
0 f, }: ^- w7 y% h! I- dattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
+ b/ ^+ R. m$ f# twill acquire language earlier and faster.; B1 T4 i* \( m& c
' } @' }. ?' |, C" Z) ?3 h
In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately7 d" ?1 f4 y& P0 f2 Z# G6 q- U
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop. _7 e# p7 v8 G1 ?5 A
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or h$ X2 I* W% P3 q2 P! D! v
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
/ B4 x g$ _2 }8 D3 X& w/ amay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your* v8 K1 B5 a5 w3 t; `2 H
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.
% h2 B t( _2 j% R% f
5 U3 `) R+ p& ~. D& u" @5 R8 [& r! ZAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
$ z; C2 C- q0 ?, j+ b6 M7 Y2 _behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and+ @" K5 B2 Y2 k/ k. P
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.
) i8 r! t' k/ T5 u: q# I' U) @% ~1 O7 x& u) w' x
Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously, J+ F* `. p' e
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby% I' z6 e% H, q* D' p9 G
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to6 C! u9 j7 B7 o% G+ \% p6 s. z
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

0 h) C9 H) f* N, P ~: jFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
5 t3 C) B! \* J$ Y" Pthe child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.9 [5 s: z( V& }$ X1 V+ M

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
6 P% K% e7 o5 c& M5 G) e' ^; r9 cover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she; O5 ^! x& ?0 Y) r$ B4 Q4 u
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will( n# w/ r, \( V; Y$ C; |
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate
# \8 J5 l7 O% h" H) Y% |on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.* O$ Q j" p+ V, @5 O
As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
) F6 C8 E) @$ v& `& F+ sare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
% I8 N8 h0 L% b' s9 |video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
& p( I0 T1 ~- ^, q4 I1 g. L# ^% Gin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and, E6 L. v8 {& ~7 R
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
: i9 P! g$ S$ Z+ y1 f+ wand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of* q, B8 |$ t; z/ B% v$ v2 Z8 @
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
5 e) |6 p+ b% @' ~journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child* A6 b' B3 T, D
and the parents participating in this study.
