I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I8 n/ Z/ _. Q ?' q; p7 I" H
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
, H z/ ~1 {$ wconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
: K/ w9 |& R. F/ E3 Vattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them" {0 D: X1 C. [2 }
will acquire language earlier and faster.

; {) ^ a& g) S0 p R3 M6 P, MIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
1 x3 D4 u% G( o" t) W! i& Z30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
7 e. u; Y- r; V2 q7 tvideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or: Z- ?4 k% L; B1 I) C- d6 s
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you0 K) ^, ]2 V/ o# z1 Q1 y( [) g
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your, O7 x3 `5 |7 o- \# ]9 I# `1 _; T
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used. S( I2 |8 B7 | H3 E4 _0 [
& S( W0 w/ @3 D/ o: v& k
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
: ]% z2 Q# |% y+ a7 Kbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
4 q2 q' i$ Q9 _" X+ D' [$ S! a+ _those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes." V- b. H: E+ F# g

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
_/ O6 g0 [! ]) }& k# h+ b4 B( U1 Tproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby% P1 Z, z4 }# L) H8 l2 |7 ^( t
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
' u, Z: ]0 V6 t- s$ Gthose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.6 V( X! v; ?8 e7 j5 [+ t& C% P3 T
+ F7 i! `$ B q* yFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this, Z$ p& B7 Z" V+ C- o- w! t, F
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.0 E: U, I& g4 h5 Q6 K
$ S3 d7 x4 B/ `7 S" @. @; tThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done" }5 g) d2 K) [5 S2 Y) [
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she" }0 d+ u, ~ o' P$ @0 A( |% o: q
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will; o3 f1 S9 A8 y7 N8 u4 y+ v+ V
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate9 K! N' Q3 {1 f! M1 D# B

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data( f' E0 G# r; n* A' S) R8 |! A
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show& L. ^' @$ t8 q7 \
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used) | p: D, A& x4 N
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
% p: G/ b! t5 I6 O9 C+ idestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
4 i' E8 `, P6 T2 \0 s0 Uand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
! R. @+ d, b9 P% t4 D) e, W3 e6 UHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific7 R; s/ U {: W+ D/ A$ P4 Z
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child) E* g% r& ` U7 m5 i9 H
