* y2 r# w5 g6 }I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
& {6 R5 i6 Y Dam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,2 B+ _3 w- i' G$ a3 w: m3 E
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and# {3 `2 B" X: d
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them+ o/ j# P* m* O
will acquire language earlier and faster.$ U4 q. P* V) k* K$ Q0 y
3 n7 w! |0 n$ f. A; ~+ K' }9 e
In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately6 W# t! `' |% G+ G( R. q
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
8 p: m. e8 k0 c% ivideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or& n1 y% g# _! @
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
6 R2 A" A7 o1 E" U- [) \ G% Xmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
+ B. C9 z. Q/ w7 R9 Zbaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.! H+ u9 m v, D) V' M; n

At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common& b6 q) Q4 ]: T$ y( c+ W2 N, K
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and. @. E6 V4 H7 d5 ^4 _
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.4 g- D( E A& w( v* f9 _# I
$ v$ `+ ^) {* P' S( G" kStarting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously% c+ \# ~" D% \; T% b2 T
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
4 c$ _+ z' k+ b) ~ N7 Wknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
+ s' P3 m/ }7 X- c# R% c+ ]those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,2 o, ], i$ j7 O
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.4 Y. @8 P F3 w* ]7 C& Q9 ~' f
% t. N, @( U# e+ v: d, xThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
1 ?0 _' F7 Y+ h# i) Z2 D5 k7 qover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she) h; z, P; W& H5 _* o* s1 l l
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
2 R% L0 X+ \( g. f4 ptake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate5 k8 c/ l/ P3 D, C" p: L9 B" n
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
) H4 D. J7 Z$ A! D# R' gAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data0 @6 h' r! b8 {# R! g, u) V( J
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
$ l6 V" c- W' }! K! |% r# Vvideo clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
# ~) x F: j! ^in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and3 `# L6 \+ ~/ d0 F, Y f8 w
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
% s2 y# o" q. k$ ?8 rand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of8 r% }% ?8 m, B4 _; t" n3 p% p6 a: J
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
