I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I o. T }9 E# y2 w( j
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,0 I* s' {: u: p. x
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and% s" }) `; E: r1 {3 I) _3 j1 z
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them/ _9 n% t# R5 k
will acquire language earlier and faster.; d; Q! t6 i# Q+ |! i
- l- I8 M* i# w7 u2 iIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
" N4 h* m0 |. ` W5 P" m j30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop& [- m6 w, \+ ^3 H w2 [
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
8 C7 S E) U6 I; X8 Q( ?simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
3 v& j! O; W r( G5 hmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your$ M* G* A. C! H: P8 F3 x I3 G
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.* b4 S' W# p- ]! u) M
+ w2 r* G1 E3 Z+ S# E5 _At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
" B \+ c' Z7 h+ l& abehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
! \, ~8 |' d( _5 C6 lthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

$ f" Z/ s1 c1 f; SStarting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
# Q$ ?: U: \$ U0 K5 R2 xproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
% U) |' s! u! S$ Z. O& wknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to9 E3 z: b- @- p+ ?9 C) e
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.2 U2 F. c1 U# R
( w7 W! R9 r1 o, l: u& w+ U
Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,- t) c1 c9 M% {' {6 H; q( V' C
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects./ f% Z4 h' ?3 _$ R3 N& s
# ]+ @# C; R) C, H) K# HThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done) v7 C; W9 v! V+ q \6 b
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
, S5 l) D! c5 P' O5 @is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
, S2 `/ a7 o- X* K( Q8 Dtake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate* [. P9 v/ k" E
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
( O% M( v1 m" \- n4 PAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
$ e" O4 k k5 j! z3 M2 ~% B! V$ tare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show3 E- s+ Y# _3 \ C
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
' ?/ }9 B- _0 j8 Din the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
5 e; ~6 k9 w0 S- W5 O4 jdestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
) g+ T b0 h' z- I3 E+ T: F7 @$ Aand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
: l( _4 z* s! ]* |: G2 j9 N: K& mHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific/ U% X: J6 x5 G* ^
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
