I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
5 m+ d. |- k0 Mam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
) V# [3 u4 S) G& i: H. s: s J& Aconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
7 ]% d8 r, V" ?; w% T" ~! rattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
- |6 j N, x% }0 E( n( U Fwill acquire language earlier and faster.1 y; E. y% F# ^& D. I( [
' V: X* t; i$ P3 G" [0 H+ D5 \In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately# Y; G& }2 ]: J; _
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop4 u/ ]' `% J: p
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or5 X) W! R6 D/ j6 w: g
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
; w* E$ @6 t; Gmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
+ \; b' H0 y# g) Y( \ Jbaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.

, Q4 U: o# W& z/ OAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
# u/ } E' ]2 V1 V+ @. Y1 C; Mbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and1 Y* w+ q y( K1 D. n8 W
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

5 u/ b \ Z+ {6 r9 }9 SStarting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
! u; o% h+ W O2 I. M2 Pproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby' a* h4 }( y" B: P5 ~
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
" I C% ~* h, xthose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

6 J/ g; M- q. U; E: F0 `: TFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
" q- J7 H3 l' [: Athe child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.# P) N2 \ t) \) _' e+ }
. `7 r! M& C6 y) R) PThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
' x, N4 Q2 N& i! lover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she& Y4 F2 H- Y- P, w
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
5 J; x' K, X) o/ e% otake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate0 _) q" s- i4 F( x0 o5 |8 b
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
8 h+ d3 e) g P2 LAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data' b3 k: l) O) H E; p) T9 w
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show* s5 Q7 \$ e2 A2 D
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
1 S1 i7 J! ?7 H$ J' H' q5 oin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and# p, {9 N2 w& ~2 {; r( C8 L( \7 ?! o
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
* L8 U( o) U. Jand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of9 U, Y7 v3 [# U
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
6 s7 e) Z# F x: k- xjournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child. M4 k+ @0 x; ]( `
and the parents participating in this study.
