" ?5 H/ r5 m9 vam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
7 P' u0 }! Y9 r9 F* |/ u6 Z1 v* ]! econcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and0 h3 y7 R1 C [' D3 {/ r) e
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
+ |, |& T$ J! q/ L& I! f/ l: hwill acquire language earlier and faster.

; I0 R: [9 k, e( H2 G# @+ p, dIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
1 D. W7 ?7 a/ a30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop' O/ @( Z6 H! O2 [* v3 J; H, h$ A
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or h) n7 o+ `( |' ^+ z c$ ~
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you4 E& t0 i: o8 L' m
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
$ l; e/ G% h, E5 [4 P: y& wbaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.

At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
& n2 \+ f) |# r0 w, {. Hbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
2 ?6 p$ i7 ?/ Vthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

0 o& h" {* o) Q0 R; k1 ]$ ?0 kStarting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
" {! U' y- D2 s! f# Hproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
9 t6 q1 m! |( l0 e* xknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
! M1 \" {0 | }# D; Wthose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.
) w" s- R. q! @/ B5 ]) \/ n& |' C+ y; r x$ f" R2 s8 t$ y
Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this," z2 b U% A( d, M+ B6 d' _) b6 U( e* `
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.+ ~3 G4 a5 c! y+ Y7 T% J) R
; r4 y) A+ G1 e/ c* wThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done$ \& m' y( `7 r7 I
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she# C$ K4 a4 ]. e: B; \
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
; Y0 p/ W8 l# F9 W( q+ M. t' Otake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate
# {( b2 ^; d0 Z( non the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.

are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show0 ~! _1 q% j5 a. \$ b0 p
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
# D' m( C! u4 Y3 i( M( O8 C2 Din the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and4 s( ]# b5 J, X+ P/ n
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,2 s; _% }; U$ S5 w3 d
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of! ~& f4 c5 B- x$ K9 A
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific4 p3 S( W' g Q$ @) H
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child; @) F8 n1 D: F, Z6 @, S
