I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
3 C8 Y0 _1 _0 z3 q7 G; T4 Kam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
* ^/ q2 w5 s4 Q/ f! ~9 Fconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and* b# J) _# _8 J5 W. t' @. z, S, m
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them( e/ b' R4 ^6 `0 F# X/ T9 |& H) B: J& J
will acquire language earlier and faster.
& G' e5 M" y3 a5 o5 [* k* y4 [; z, l; z: a( C. n
In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
; D# t$ y5 m& y4 }% B1 ^$ o30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop' u+ X9 s, }, h* b
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
# ?3 f- H7 s% `7 Esimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
/ f: ]# \# L- p8 Tmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your) h/ W2 l, A, y+ Q1 X
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.# {9 N- `' \$ }4 _% H2 Y+ x
, ?5 J" }5 Y) q3 W( Q( f, ]- G/ X
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
" v$ r4 V( H; h: ^behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and, d# W9 Q2 t( S# e) e
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.8 |- [1 u/ R+ L7 m4 O
3 {4 c) r6 `& l+ Q C: R6 rStarting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously1 x+ J4 N# @% Y9 B
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby* L0 h6 S; E- H
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
$ ^% M- e- q0 p; A- E1 othose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.
0 U8 V$ }! w5 p, ^3 O' b: ^! e/ j. b& z+ d' n, \8 v9 h
Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
$ Z# p- {) ^7 a- i+ mthe child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.! @1 F! Z9 [' @- d" N

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done; p$ Q0 L& Q, W: _
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
' p* ?$ ]! N; f$ X3 J% ais 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
* w) W: k7 z {+ ttake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
7 M; L$ d) X @7 Aare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
1 i4 O' R9 h! o9 M% j/ cvideo clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
, h7 B- V) F! U' e; F. H) Fin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
- x2 W3 Q! |- @; U: \destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
* E) i W' I Q3 H- l+ o0 e. B& Hand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
' A, j1 ?' y9 dHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
# U5 D* w9 U& o. }/ }6 k q" Jjournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
