I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
+ [* A( Y2 T$ f0 u# a1 w: I7 oam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,% x7 f! d, d$ F+ i, G4 p4 [
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and' N9 L# F3 f3 O) d" m! T: s; l
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
! }3 T: M) F6 ^8 _will acquire language earlier and faster.
; t6 h5 S; F8 c/ Q5 ~) a
$ W; \1 P( y9 h8 f3 T- lIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately- Q5 L7 q; X! f# D' t. ?4 F% x
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
; r6 K$ \2 |7 ^" rvideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or% d8 t) L2 O0 w! P' x
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you( k6 D+ c0 v4 H) |+ M4 k
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your, S& L( I7 |7 e# ^; g R
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.
( p3 X% T0 E0 T4 ~ e
( N7 l& z! ]: Z) rAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common, v9 i# o& ]) ]6 q) ?& s8 F
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
5 d- q/ j5 Z- e4 c* I2 ?% qthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

+ ?5 W) E- R3 I( M2 V( [Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
: y; t( N/ }9 {2 O+ v6 iproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby2 N# \# v0 s9 { i2 b
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to$ z2 [" Y+ _: z+ a4 f! L
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.. `3 q; m: o0 v
- G. p* a4 e" g4 S- qFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,0 y. d+ {/ o3 i8 h% Q4 ?( Q5 m H
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
. p! s! ?6 G' H4 H0 {over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
1 c+ u( U, }! ]& ^# U+ s, d/ `, iis 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will" {6 v( y3 b9 N7 [% D4 `$ p6 C7 s
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
- c, v1 @% f7 G, m7 Z. G8 dare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show* h9 B6 N; w7 H, T7 C; N. P) R; \, q
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used5 f l R9 W/ X' s6 Z
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
4 T. x+ X D; w! U3 Wdestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations, W& @. R# P( C/ B5 S3 \
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
4 G# e: ^: D1 NHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
5 V5 {5 c& U3 U& Z: Vjournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child% e( ]3 H# Z+ E3 M
and the parents participating in this study.
