I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I; L# i: `6 ]5 q; v. A
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,0 R' ~! c8 Q m3 ~- L* b$ m
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
1 @- Q6 j2 I2 n Mattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
. G, `. l: }; F5 z) u: Hwill acquire language earlier and faster.

7 h. L! O5 w' L/ B0 H& `) DIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately+ D- w! `* }/ c$ H+ @! g* g
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop; g' _) ?# o; t8 F% z6 J+ N
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
$ {2 x( z, X/ R& g$ jsimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
& X) M' ^$ a7 \9 Q# r9 O# }may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your) k. D. Z' p# U- q3 W3 J
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.% ]& [8 m! b( a3 \% \
8 d; U* L3 _ E6 TAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common/ ^; e% D; }1 a3 `1 b
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
' b& i! N. r8 P, W! Kthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously3 W* }! s" M5 \' t* J8 s' |
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
; d- L' n# x1 h" ^% ]4 jknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to" Q( b/ c1 |) v; w" L
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.+ P2 ]4 p, f, @& \

Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,! u! u, X# W6 L1 k) t+ _2 e. m
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

5 l. ]6 u6 ~5 B$ L$ ZThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done3 M8 p5 [7 e8 M( G
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she" N- x8 E0 B j \% _0 x2 S
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will- Q; N% @" |9 _9 ^, y/ |: c
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate

' R! l+ _7 ~2 cAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data: @% H1 p+ P7 `4 G/ V; I( w2 N
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
* s5 a* c( f/ v6 S7 Dvideo clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used7 ?0 U3 r. R. d2 V1 ~+ T7 f9 \
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
) F( G6 W P0 z6 A# udestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,4 U$ t% ]5 ?6 W1 N' a" q
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of* L i, b3 p5 [# e1 L( E; r
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific6 G. ?( j1 t: _/ x
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
; e( x" h3 j# h( s6 i& _and the parents participating in this study.8 P( n w, G( Q
