( p8 O2 e* e; t" _$ W4 eI am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
& v B1 I. Z1 e9 ~am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
# `- K5 |" G- v/ Uconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
8 s, q% h; i" m- a H" Cattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
- C3 B( v& Y% awill acquire language earlier and faster.: D X+ ^& K0 p7 x
: S7 B& d5 `5 s3 ?( t! y: g: \" fIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
; q3 L2 {2 Z) g0 f" K) M6 F& q30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop6 P5 I, G! S; o; ^1 A
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
3 k! ?4 q- m" R; Xsimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
. L& y ~" r8 A5 {, Umay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your1 `1 s2 ]5 F. X( k ]* n9 X, I1 f$ u
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.

At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
& y' {* ^1 U* |" abehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and d. Z# b5 R) e# R; z6 E
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes., k1 E! U8 p1 ~$ O* q+ \
+ ?9 D: u# z m: z: ?1 gStarting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously# l3 l9 o% T7 k/ d5 W* W, Z
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby0 z. R+ m- n/ U! S1 D2 K
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to, f* @, w, U1 L
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

5 a. r6 q) M% g C" P* BFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,6 M8 N- q) J4 f/ c" k! O' F
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.6 p* f8 b+ w) R( x4 i" j* [/ p
& E! j8 C* }7 ?+ jThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done3 K/ f) Z3 U, u& [
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
! R P; o* ?3 mis 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
' v0 U! n, B; M2 ?, u4 \% Wtake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
! P- L$ J" ]* X6 q" fare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
9 O) @8 l% _8 H8 Pvideo clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used* @' r0 t s$ W, l) {
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
8 `/ q5 c" C9 bdestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
& h6 {) r8 M+ r- ]and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of% C" g! F( c6 E) S: O4 D' R* @
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
! Y* c# d/ N4 `journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child1 }4 y9 `8 r1 {; J7 `
and the parents participating in this study.
