I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
2 _+ K8 ~6 ^- L9 `; r; H! n' e/ g4 ram conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
8 R$ ]4 S1 [4 O" ^6 Bconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
/ {7 k) j9 |2 k, w% F& Y4 `0 l5 Y; `2 fattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them1 y0 N% u* q0 \! {3 d# p5 f! l( {
will acquire language earlier and faster." n7 L8 U' }8 i9 V
; q5 A7 @) c8 C5 V# C' jIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately% `7 M$ h$ l, g1 L( ^' \
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
1 [2 t6 s) d( r& e$ cvideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or! C6 F) c; C7 W0 A* N2 K" W; x
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
8 `, f7 u' _! i2 p) l- I( rmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
' t, i1 o' a. J- p6 U+ z( mbaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.

; p/ R8 f4 F" U. X' rAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
) Q3 O" w4 U0 t7 |: r4 ]! O; Fbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
! ^4 f# g" V, R5 ^) s5 R) `those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

6 @0 {' O. @9 V; }Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
" g1 {3 F Y4 f) O/ b1 H8 Y8 Rproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
9 ~# G; {! x+ |& ]' xknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
7 y9 b0 Q; V& E/ ^1 bthose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

+ x8 x2 J5 K; Z% I, nFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
) T5 n B# d0 `8 xthe child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.. D: S7 K: X% }2 p7 X

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
. ~* {5 m+ H ~. `( Wover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she8 ?$ w) r( B% h, P& A* l T
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
# m8 l. b% V4 f3 b0 ?take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate+ D2 D8 o% L0 a- d u6 A
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.

$ a9 ^( K. d0 I- T! Lare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show. ?" a/ ^" X& q% F% n$ H. w
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
: R) {) k$ i/ r" r# bin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
$ b1 k2 L' P/ s; V; N Cdestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
5 X6 m5 W6 T. ~4 \- hand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
+ C7 j' K3 D/ S; _Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
6 N" E) f4 p+ y* Yjournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
