# P" T% x: m- i3 D' C9 ~2 M1 Xam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
$ k; Y' T1 J% o& z) B9 \concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and% z. D& X6 ]0 i+ C
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them2 Q- `6 c6 A* u, D6 [. [: E
will acquire language earlier and faster.3 N! N. [5 f. h+ e% E( O( k# L
* W) h: D0 i% M; M4 U* o
In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately9 h" F& G% I, }2 V
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
! p4 ]; K# K/ o8 N4 ivideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or; A5 L( T2 a+ V6 _* M
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
! b( r0 h, R% J) R# t$ B# a7 `( w" Amay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
) d9 k* ~& @ \. c% o9 Sbaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.1 S. m- ?0 d+ d% d

At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
4 D0 S' o9 X: e/ B+ s9 @4 ebehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
" M3 d/ F N1 L* u/ Q! tthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.
/ }3 y6 e M; T$ z# t) d: E3 |% W9 |" C
Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
$ y2 `# C- [9 kproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby# v( g. E: F+ F9 R! C/ \
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to; S2 c; y) `5 c$ [
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.* \2 f. g% }! h* c% [
; {" N+ R/ R1 J& O, U' qFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
" @- N& ?% l3 o d; o7 fthe child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.6 _& H. g3 w$ ]& F6 v4 S# W

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
3 J! F! O; x1 y' J% i$ {over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
: G4 z$ L4 Y9 ~& ris 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will6 a! W v- C, J7 Q5 \
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data7 h: ^7 M' i+ Q9 p; {; m
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
, V% o: y% K& Zvideo clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used* I9 g% j+ d9 D# D
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and# c9 S4 x! T9 ^! Q5 i
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,' u# C2 x* @: l R; _+ V
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
, ?# z6 H6 y- t4 J% nHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific5 w- B2 M9 c% \3 H" s
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
