+ ^4 n0 V+ l7 Iam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,, W, P# z+ t: E# [) H* D
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
+ A1 @% s9 e$ [attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them- S7 ]+ a5 {* o7 }0 Z: U0 ?* U5 C# G
will acquire language earlier and faster.

4 S: E8 C! Q' O. m7 N! dIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately1 k# q- h0 ~( y8 i. K6 o+ F
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop6 B6 W4 o0 Q$ [0 D5 |
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
8 F7 R Z' k' }. R) [simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
" R( a2 f' |5 I4 E+ ]9 }/ M; Emay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your8 E1 ^+ K2 A1 Y. c4 D; X* B
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.# V9 V+ S5 T& Q6 b& h% A
) u5 M) d. Q& O y4 tAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common. L. ~% L" v. u& c+ Z! O- h5 x$ O* Z
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
/ ]+ O; J* }7 @' ~! n4 x6 l$ ethose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously: u# [* k3 N% U- j+ O) J; M; ^
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby4 |7 L+ ^7 u8 v# v* q
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
$ |; K5 T/ h y) F- ]those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

' f; B; U- ]6 h$ \; iFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,/ {+ j& ]$ w' Q( s8 g$ _
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
7 I3 K t3 m" @0 s3 qover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
/ C D' ?" {4 {) I% M, T( i) ois 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will- M' \; q" h; p
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate0 S3 H2 w( j! G7 b0 L3 K3 u0 `5 W
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.7 n, x8 a2 E3 G1 T
As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
* H8 a4 j5 t2 T3 `# ~8 Oare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show

, i- z. m$ M! H$ ?1 edestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,$ a( k7 n3 I* Q6 |
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
3 m# E$ \) L& p0 _/ zHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific

and the parents participating in this study.
