am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,3 r5 `/ z# L: [" [" b+ U' M: A
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
2 Q. _1 \- |0 K' e4 b) R% gattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
7 N C5 p5 a' o( owill acquire language earlier and faster.; Q9 [+ `( l1 L3 [+ U9 b3 ~

In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
( x4 R& e8 P8 s/ ? N30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
9 h* T( X& Y% m) Kvideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
2 O6 a7 s2 q! U: Y! h8 vsimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
& S& a. O& K4 d( s' Dmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your: F9 [- ? b% q
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.# a. {+ c4 @( U6 ?- j: O8 W
3 x) ?5 g$ g! B6 k0 J3 t
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
# |! ^6 S& h: q0 zbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and7 v' W" k9 v9 g. ~
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

1 d- i* z% F6 {Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously# w* |. Z {$ C. T, j1 V0 J
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
: D! L) t$ a6 g* ^4 \knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
. `* [( T% l$ r2 F1 ~* Y' ^; [those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.2 x z; |; m3 e

Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,

+ J0 y5 |: O, v n: |The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
4 P& j$ {1 R- P& w: |over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
3 e8 ]7 d0 h. |, R. H) j& cis 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
' j) A7 J' o' n2 ztake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate
/ K$ k1 R Y5 S! c" ]+ _$ z8 uon the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
) H3 \7 n+ D4 H( s* w, G6 @As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data& A9 f) T5 T2 }8 R0 ^
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show2 x, i; ?" U4 Q) D; q: {
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
* N3 b* \8 [& x$ sin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and, b0 ] z* e4 B
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
6 j! Z0 r! X# G. R: ]and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
; ^* g, P. ?2 tHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
