I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I8 U3 u, h4 j( N% W; E, i0 [
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,0 g. l% V M. y
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
3 U6 H: E! J% V+ Zattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them) v0 z0 O: [( ~+ x
will acquire language earlier and faster.
; t% \7 @8 a/ o- N) M" z3 @
2 e8 B% U% A! e2 ZIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
) U# Z5 t* S5 K; i0 _# d* B30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
3 t+ K6 \% K6 c5 Z/ \( ~videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or- I: X9 Z8 `, Y! T) y- \
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you* u1 b. W- H' {$ L2 o
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your4 w: U/ o; n) Y9 s6 Q! N5 u# S6 t# v9 i
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.

0 P! f4 [5 k( h: |% B8 U* A0 sAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common$ y0 f/ [! a. e
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
8 {) q r! }4 ]those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.% f" `+ i# R: V# G
/ Q+ `3 q3 A* c$ e$ y7 A' c) v
Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
8 H! M* ?1 f E6 k6 Mproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby2 P6 A2 }( ~# h5 j
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
& l7 Y5 x5 `0 K8 s( Othose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

4 R' |, M! e o0 f! U0 rFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,5 v! U- l; ?5 n2 B ? e) j
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

0 z0 Q$ W* c3 K+ {2 R6 b8 q! SThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done5 {6 I0 J, y, P
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she8 v, T2 T: _ u
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will' U+ ]) P7 L* y6 U
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate, r# L& Q# a7 ] ~$ F
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
S9 I& F1 S- JAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data J% g. T5 X% y. A8 W" B6 _
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show, a% p! T% B8 U" g( t
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
5 ]2 p9 `/ v7 L. }# _6 ein the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
- }- H1 B4 }6 l. d0 H6 s, Bdestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,' G; V4 z+ _) z, q8 m6 q
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of2 d0 k- u! t" R* W& c* f0 w" z
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific" Y0 d* q \0 M6 d9 Z
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
