I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
; b$ O2 e" @2 L* X4 S" aam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,( [) _9 f B& |" \' x# @3 `
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and4 C% _8 T% f4 c- g
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them+ g& M j5 F! G' j$ D7 A
will acquire language earlier and faster.

In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately

videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or/ z" V& N; K6 o2 I! K4 [
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
# b7 w( t4 F- ? ^4 m- }2 Ymay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your+ W0 {9 r. q! q, U7 p2 u+ o. R
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.

At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common

those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
