am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
4 Z C& v% U8 ?: Mconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and+ p" W2 C8 Y" l- U% i4 `
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them& ?1 A# z. I$ I% H+ y- n
will acquire language earlier and faster.

$ U. S. x* F' r6 PIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
! T! O2 }' y6 r0 t30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop7 Z" u, @4 m7 s* o# u' `$ W
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or; z" K: S9 R5 m! M$ H6 h1 i
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
3 G3 P/ Z: D; ]# M ^( O p8 Wmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
3 M7 S3 G: U7 I4 w, N* C( v4 Ybaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.

: Y* G" h1 p( {* d$ UAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
3 T# B D, p' R; {) Hbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
! y9 N9 B& e2 O; ^9 i; [* ^those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.
3 t0 @$ m2 g3 n- b6 i) S* [$ S5 v. j; N( b Z, i7 r" P0 z
Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
$ r6 a' g* G6 v& m+ O2 oproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
, M5 u3 ~7 F) ^5 P. Hknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
5 u: v% u: _ G+ L6 T1 t' cthose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.5 n) j, ^6 A- K6 Q8 x
+ C# J% f% j9 ^) g! P; C! k' nFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,' h6 K, e p( W% s0 q1 q
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

! n _& a! b0 u! f' G4 yThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
* b+ Z6 O- x) i: L" O0 l2 Nover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
$ s( a; @ q' N! `1 tis 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
k3 U2 t( j4 d: Ktake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate; P; `: b& t4 d
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
- W+ p$ ]9 I: y0 LAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data1 @1 S1 B, ?/ D, {
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show* S6 r8 b8 t3 Q2 {. C
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used; \: z: k* c/ |) p: }4 V
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and# E! r+ m5 u; \; p. v
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,8 T4 }; M" R' k' ^, |
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
5 \+ B) R: {3 P( F. U* Z1 h( qHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific& {- b* N' U; |& o5 j: `# D1 s
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child# ?% W2 b; {6 i& ]3 j
