am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
6 C" q6 q6 \ P2 J: n" e! A: r9 Jconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
# F: _$ g# j# [7 S/ V( Cattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them, d# {% Q% [% p
will acquire language earlier and faster.
$ z' R p8 T* M4 |( ^4 }4 z3 `7 [+ T& _; }9 }. G8 { V* v z9 Q, Z
In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
$ [5 x/ B. z" e5 N7 K" X( E30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
- g4 G! ]7 F/ ?+ {videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
6 ^' n) D3 Q0 Wsimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
) Y* e, v8 z8 }2 X1 emay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your1 c" m. X1 }; G R1 P" @# j
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.

At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
2 e$ Y( i. e4 b, wbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and3 {/ p' Q; W) g; R0 p+ ~- e1 T
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.
+ f) P& f2 U( d* z6 N
) B* f0 [' E* z, G3 ~% b! ~Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
# w7 H; E0 P8 M$ \, b& gproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
, g/ h7 G' ?( F5 { P z1 u+ Bknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to) ^0 s7 x3 C" u/ m4 O+ C" s
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.1 | {3 w6 w+ O' y2 o; ]
4 v/ J$ i& s; R2 s5 y( C LFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
1 J0 @1 V, Y3 L+ a* lthe child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done3 D( j% |* ]" @9 V2 X% o! k
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she" e& E6 [$ \4 K+ L! s# O
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will9 a6 o! |8 C9 K& V9 S6 _- L' N
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate
- x0 w# t* ?4 z: Y, ?2 `" }on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
; S f3 e( M5 X- F' TAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data# y9 J/ S3 u0 m2 q
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show" f9 T& w& i3 J, o* j7 ~$ g' q7 P
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
, I& t7 U8 }. I! ?% | yin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and8 W2 {: r. M( l$ q. @
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,5 f8 ^* h1 @$ g( x( _
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of# b2 \: |4 u( R/ \% H
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific" w2 r7 n5 _. h) g! L |# Y% z1 Z, u
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child6 P3 X- K; H2 _5 i$ t
and the parents participating in this study.
