! E1 ^- D J |- v4 v* N4 u& Xam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”," n. _" u- } t5 ~
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and; P4 `$ N8 [% Y+ y7 q: L$ t" W
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them0 [+ t& L) P4 L4 V4 A8 q* u
will acquire language earlier and faster.3 M- W- e+ v% `+ Q$ R6 a
: ~6 p" U F* x# XIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately4 ?6 l: y4 Y- c* X
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop: m( h6 z* w3 A) e0 \
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or& I6 i1 @' C( |/ t0 o: x
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you* Q$ Z$ [1 ~+ F: ~
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
3 Q# Z/ g% e" I2 p3 e7 s1 Tbaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.

At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common: o7 D: M8 K! P6 K0 V& a
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and" F: I: R3 w" [" ^3 A: a
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.# W; l6 ~! t1 @6 k# K: N
% F6 O! u0 T. K6 r5 QStarting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
( [, _# a# s& p j5 M: Mproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby& T( o3 M& @) T: E! k$ r2 @
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to8 {6 U1 ^+ d9 q! d' o, D r
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

! I& H5 v0 w9 }2 O1 O( f g9 s- kFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
8 L1 ^: ^: s4 a* }/ z+ E6 ethe child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.) o# j: u C3 D; p6 E

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
, _, ~, _" @5 [3 Z9 ] r; _2 Yover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
9 b. I; R( f3 x0 \is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will" N" k$ L( R6 ~' i \7 B
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate! A6 }6 I% F% \' G/ q, u
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
* e0 b* H# N- h( O- W- W) Z7 wAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
% y6 b2 c, u N: g1 e: care stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show4 j. K4 C0 d: ?. m( Y
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
[4 t O' d2 `& cin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and; A) h) c* @+ j5 w
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
; r+ Z U6 a" N) O( B4 A; pand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of& x: Y% P7 Y5 |7 @; j) g& O
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
# @: _- O. Q, Y" hjournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
