" R# b, V7 e% J: l& }" II am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I- `1 m0 \3 N; k# z5 R$ U- g6 C
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,/ Q" S( A3 O F: `9 }
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
" `- W* w B: `2 n3 ~3 Pattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
$ q* _: g0 Q% k" d% d% `6 xwill acquire language earlier and faster.
- Y6 o! F3 ]8 n3 p; j6 h$ j | c- } E) j
In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately( p* t/ O( \, [; b0 {8 O- K* t+ j: d
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
# v. F0 f) Q2 P Jvideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or! U7 e; ^4 s- p2 y6 R
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you+ L& ^# m t1 }. l A
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your- p# ?" G" b: s1 r" B1 T
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.
) O3 E* B' a8 r+ ~, V5 T7 f7 L% @, x" \+ \
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
$ Q4 l7 e: W) v0 Rbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
9 \+ W% [1 u! y& A; B: a! v Uthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

8 k, D. ?" {# _Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously6 y' f; O W' z$ k
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby5 P; Y2 Z* M3 \: K. @% p
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to+ `$ V8 P9 |' _. c. ^5 m
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.! b+ W k5 C/ f L- M
4 b9 P7 B6 S7 F7 H& y: [Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,5 O8 b, ~2 D5 G( |) n! m2 O5 C
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.! y+ w+ n; o j9 v/ v
( V0 T" `- r2 sThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
0 V9 `# ]+ g8 ^$ {7 F4 cover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
& {3 @; G0 O0 E0 E; a# j# C- S4 J! ~is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
, p1 o1 d4 m$ k" R' _+ I- M+ stake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data% X2 S3 y/ w$ v/ Y% x
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show& j( ^. O3 K- O* c; d, `
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
; L6 W% N q7 ]: r3 |! p8 pin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and% c8 X |# b, M. B
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
3 M9 c2 o: b. Gand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
/ L @$ h2 z7 uHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
/ v. ?' M1 g$ S: Y1 Q5 T% l# o) h+ djournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
