am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,! J$ d1 w4 N) j: b( s- z$ p
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
& l( s2 J5 l: o" e( b" @" Oattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them: @6 R/ X+ J* y7 P" ]) I. ^, Z) A
will acquire language earlier and faster.
+ f$ I( U6 I, ~; a' \9 N Y Z t* z0 ^' l- J( [0 } n4 f t
In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately0 m5 y0 w$ A7 x. V2 e
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop% |/ W6 _7 g# G) T: E. w
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
9 I# c! f$ w; c4 wsimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you; V9 K4 r. j* T3 M! i" ? K9 g9 E) V/ x
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
/ F" G* o: ~9 T2 Hbaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used. i+ O% L, G9 U0 }' J( y S

At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common2 S/ _! q3 E9 H, H' {. b
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
. {0 }0 B5 C! A. V. gthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

' `5 {( N/ f7 T5 LStarting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously `4 r9 s/ J1 C+ J
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby$ n+ v% u( t0 r0 V
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to/ |4 a! M0 j7 t- F0 m
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

x! s4 V, B- [( ?Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,6 h* X. u+ F8 _6 {! x d4 M
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.4 O$ D. G& U8 a1 }

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done" ~: G+ _9 Z3 x: F
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she/ }; \- Q- L: ?7 b
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will" O4 [ \( U) w) q# u! y
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data' v1 B1 g( g% w
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show& i" D5 f }6 d: n" l6 r/ x$ _
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used5 U; V( n& U% {" ]4 ?* u; P
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and. \* {! i \+ p9 y2 m
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
9 J! }5 z9 b8 m# p9 pand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
( ~+ ~8 Y5 R h8 EHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific. o4 y) S- `- d# _( q; n$ b
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child0 O$ J( f$ Y( q# t
