I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
6 `7 Q( S, T: G8 s/ o* mam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
' D; d, J! M! \9 b/ _+ K1 nconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and# T9 ~* P0 f6 F5 X* w/ @3 o
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
( g! t, g. ^- V/ m/ \# ]will acquire language earlier and faster.

* X, m. R8 a' O4 `5 T: r* f8 ZIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
: }% I2 ~& J/ ~* N7 o: ?30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop5 k `: g( |7 h! l
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or k- i' C: C0 C$ }8 z
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
6 \/ }4 Q# F' u; [may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your2 t9 N8 d; B& P! {: N
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.5 Y, }: [9 l2 w5 z
1 @+ [) x$ F: ]2 D! i% C/ |' sAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common& L7 [5 g$ {7 O# d9 }/ C& _; R: M
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and% F. d6 ?9 d4 s
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.% E+ x; @; d3 F1 ~# u
7 s& W: K( V" W+ T1 E+ @* E
Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
/ ^$ w. D0 T, Gproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby3 d2 R+ I: t2 I! q- l+ f
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to: T6 Y4 }/ `* g! W# e
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

4 O G+ B- ^2 H4 V! D1 v4 tFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,7 B- E9 n5 P. f$ _7 s$ f0 C
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.9 W: p& j& E; |- `. r& r
% O$ Y4 g. ?- u L1 a( e* @* l
The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
5 }& k3 g6 w6 g) t$ J1 V0 {& gover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
. V' @8 _0 X& M$ \3 Tis 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will9 k d& |! X, k7 ^ C4 m7 f4 D
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate

! `; ]' T! M( z7 g& X, JAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data/ ]) A( G0 j& ~" ^5 L! A4 J
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show% E1 p$ o! C. o7 B! G7 F s
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used4 b" R8 Q1 i; m) k0 C, Z
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
{$ e8 M) P! G3 e. hdestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,% w/ T1 T6 }. a7 g. w" f
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of/ Y8 } t7 J9 Z1 Z3 K9 d0 C! F
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific( I* ^2 ~" c/ f1 X) k0 N! r2 ]8 [
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child7 a5 b" j$ w, `1 o( t6 K
and the parents participating in this study.
