Dear Parent or Guardian,3 J) y) T; E3 M, \
I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
6 ]+ D- i4 \; j4 s0 `2 }am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,7 e$ I D+ C. ]7 Y# d7 R! H. ~
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
8 o8 {9 V7 L! ^4 H5 R* j+ tattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them- B3 H$ h4 [: K8 O
will acquire language earlier and faster.2 Y9 w# j3 l: B* v( A% _* y
7 G0 M3 a% {, F) ]# M; t* }In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
( c6 n" k9 D, y$ S30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop4 p2 h% x# o! R5 R! Q
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or" z; t" d9 ^' p. `- C- }8 T8 d/ P& E
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
1 n5 Q! H& Z* d' `' |6 V2 Smay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your

V& a& U7 W0 rAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
