I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I+ e* {/ k; h* c
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
; D7 D1 T8 G! d. J8 ?# R3 f* pconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
2 U- x' F# B0 \0 l5 o4 Tattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them% A9 q N$ v3 {
will acquire language earlier and faster.& a2 H- W; U9 }$ F% x" U
) @% j8 O5 Z* s7 wIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
4 c, P" n, j' s+ R30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop/ z" i0 V. K0 M8 I X
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
% A# X& W& C" M' Ksimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
7 `; J* Y3 h$ l8 N) l. Y4 amay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your, H3 N& h+ {4 T
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.2 ~( b' E) V) o4 ^5 L
( f5 Y o8 V0 F
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously, X# q5 ^4 k1 E3 B( K. v( w
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby s. A4 [" V5 h& y! `
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to

the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
