I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I [# L3 X7 b2 ^& t% n- ?/ e# D
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
7 x) L4 o3 a" |8 T5 R- Q; Hconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and" F0 Y9 |+ B4 }" z4 K& ~
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
( P2 g$ I7 x% a+ P, awill acquire language earlier and faster.( j) u8 h$ }& F `! o
) P {" S- ?0 j5 F$ t
In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
5 J, i8 v! v2 [) o$ b2 B) F30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop0 `0 y: q/ n) m
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or/ z- J: a Z6 J* K
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you0 l9 I2 z& a$ I2 f: Z2 C9 B$ w" l- A
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your( b1 ^/ O0 t/ C! M! v
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.

8 |2 v+ K$ I# P$ h s; SAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
% c/ }! J; x* T/ ^4 abehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
! q; s7 N2 v6 f% b5 @those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.
" e, R/ r$ E# T; m5 m/ P% G2 j L6 d0 @9 s9 o
Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
5 {. o; V( e3 D0 ^! Oproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby4 N) |6 u% }$ G$ v! ?& }
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to% F6 l1 o" @3 [) Z) F/ \+ _
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.8 ^. V( g8 Y+ N; {
; O- p& D! X" E c2 ^; N
Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
; \) d/ N2 O1 P* ?. y! u; wthe child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

2 l7 F1 F9 d( j/ S3 T a( I3 FThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
. y5 H* J$ u2 M& c/ N- pover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
) r; q, Q, n1 q- S, @is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will# b7 k" [8 i. O$ m5 y# Z
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate
4 \+ S8 n/ b1 s9 \; Q( oon the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.

are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
8 I* i' F# q0 Z% b- n! @" X2 [video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
# y; g, v' j3 o$ fin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
[9 S" _$ I0 l- d: A' ~destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,( {! W/ }6 U& L8 p9 s9 D* c
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
* E6 ~5 r) q% g& m6 UHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
6 K% L' O' ]2 M! G2 R, w x1 Mjournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child+ d6 G) U& G3 H( C1 p; P
and the parents participating in this study.
