I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I) ^& t, M4 J4 f9 l: B
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,+ Z5 m+ c5 L( `4 O$ c) _# l
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
. w, ~6 ~3 O) X1 d& xattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them3 a- o6 u8 j( q; @) I
will acquire language earlier and faster.

+ K: p' \* \2 d6 Z' ZIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately1 t: s( J: [1 ~0 P
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
$ ~7 i6 `7 c/ c3 j0 b5 rvideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
: i$ r( @# K3 Z l$ {simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
6 v0 @" Z+ a. M' rmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
0 G3 ~8 E" _7 \baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.
0 ]! V2 c1 _2 X/ G8 s9 s; N- p, l( Q( D$ F1 j0 }
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
: [9 _0 |% ?& y& N5 Zbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and4 A( s. K& Y' r O
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.) O+ |. @( d& i

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
% ]3 e* W' Z0 Eproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
* U; n: |* u7 g w0 F$ r9 Qknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to/ e. X9 B. g* {, H7 Z
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.4 p- `% g( O! B) C$ w8 k' _
5 q' g4 r2 U& g- Y9 x# I% tFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
5 m8 y! L% t- Q* A! a6 [" ]. Sthe child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.1 I/ z1 |0 A+ Y' \

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
) ^/ N- m9 ]& ]- H% Eover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she0 w _! {5 J' v. x5 U2 H2 S% @
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will, Z& G) O) s0 G# U& e! e: c9 P
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate- W$ o; H7 G4 J- M
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
: g: z3 }5 \8 w& b- D( EAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
7 c5 M- E7 u- x6 h9 r6 s9 yare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
+ ^1 ?3 x5 L u# jvideo clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
+ h* ^7 Q* `$ Q) \" H: r# A5 J4 Cin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
+ }/ D' M$ q$ xdestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,4 }! G% ^; ~( I9 h& C4 H
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of0 t' h; V- h3 \, M. X6 f% J
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
0 f9 r7 w- | _journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
