% F/ @* H Y/ B$ G" L& C3 Q Sam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
* h1 h6 ~2 N0 @- Xconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and% ]' P( ^+ C$ R7 F+ y+ B
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
; y- s, Q F+ uwill acquire language earlier and faster.

: H S* {3 @* I( ~In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately" F3 s1 p, O+ j
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
9 v W' g, N' f$ t: X2 n; ~videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
, ~' t" P$ O9 k/ U8 F' [simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you9 I7 Q! n( m9 j. W1 I1 n
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
) {4 a( W. c7 U* i" |baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.$ g! T7 \: e9 D" Y) M3 Q- w: B5 H5 D
" D7 s# Z$ W9 r5 OAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
# n; x/ m8 N9 D I/ ybehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and/ _$ l$ r% ]$ g1 ?9 h
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously1 x* I6 P0 g. U5 }
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
, X0 Z: P; f9 w. R- ~knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
: ~/ \9 m9 i5 J, a$ d' Pthose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
. u6 _: W& _* _$ n( mthe child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects. j5 B6 S5 r. m
' A: X s* A0 {& |% oThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done) N( \& X y1 @4 U; a( e
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
1 S6 H# T, {/ u* ]is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will, W) I m9 D$ K. z+ U5 { i/ G
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate2 H5 n5 H2 a* d% m$ A' a8 N
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.

, Y1 S" ~: _, _# D; lare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show# v& g- s1 T4 h6 i, s8 O
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
9 s- T" c( T9 J% T, c, k$ fin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and! C! A& @ H4 P4 {) Z2 s- {$ O
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
) b7 m+ q n+ L, \" \- \& eand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of/ D) J% {) b! r6 h" g
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific* t; O7 T9 ^+ }9 a, [( `% U
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
