( X1 _: ^. Y7 P/ N# n$ z' K& L% Fam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”, s3 R' A# Z8 q
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and" M2 O R( S ?
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them: M" G v1 O0 W* Z$ g% n
will acquire language earlier and faster.& ^/ b) R; E8 M U! ~' f# `
c! O) h. ^& W3 W" }& K9 F
In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
+ o( G$ a# @* y0 `30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop- c6 ]* b: t5 f' _9 b3 ~; z. N4 L
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
4 [" I/ R0 ?% Tsimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
, D& k7 W1 f, Z0 c+ K2 d# ]6 E' Imay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
) F0 a7 C2 s) D2 B) R2 W* Wbaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.
+ o# x/ G; d3 F; [# O3 e
) r& h4 T1 V2 x, U4 O: @At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
* k) s4 d; v( V$ N* B3 i# Wbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and' c/ ~+ X P9 i1 y0 J
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

0 P0 g" [% F4 e$ }Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously5 _/ c2 \+ t: z- ?
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
6 {: M: U6 t+ Y5 Xknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to1 o' l& g6 u% |0 Y& c, ~
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes., A3 W# \3 S# [# n5 H2 f6 @. K* k r; ]
. k+ n9 h4 F Y: ZFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
' c1 I) t2 [, Xthe child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done0 g3 g' W- |6 M, ^2 L' G/ m' w
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she0 k+ l- {* O* z1 W$ [6 |
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
8 o: B/ ]6 H9 b0 Q8 N5 Q: gtake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate' l1 m8 r& r: F: V" d: C( U

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
# [0 A: d8 W, r( Z0 `! e" i$ R- Pare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
& R3 N# m& R! I) {& O( s4 Bvideo clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
' R: W' C" ~7 z& b$ B9 P* f3 din the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and( E$ F, a, O3 z' J* e9 y3 v
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,, Q% B. @& M) k* i6 w3 G0 X
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
6 s5 f1 p# Q6 NHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
