I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I3 R4 c$ u; u4 h5 v; K2 {4 |& j. w
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,0 a; P2 W' Q5 e( `
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and' n* w( A2 W6 G! B. V. i! U( _
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them2 q3 x3 B* t. {6 a* j% o5 }; C& w
will acquire language earlier and faster.1 z, }: G+ T/ w2 E( V4 ]0 e! Q7 x

In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately) u7 q' } r* i& I+ o2 v4 ?4 P
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
6 ?: |1 c3 p" i. o4 P2 l( }videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
7 T3 G! e: {% N; x% ysimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
" N5 f& q" K1 d: dmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your" ?! G- M6 b: O1 q2 D' m
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.

, n' P: _) F, w7 a* |3 b2 EAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common# v/ ~' b# f! n( U( u+ Q; k; L# y x
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
3 F+ e, l8 \ tthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously+ I+ p# }' `) L. [8 D1 o! c. ^
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby$ y. H/ Q) ?: F! T- J/ B4 G9 ?
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to; y- k1 z g( J) R
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

+ q& k. {: ` S/ RFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
7 Z* b1 n; t( l! O, Sthe child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
) N0 x7 _( R' s7 T6 zover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
+ V) O% Y+ i" H/ A( zis 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will% [) g0 `: M" U# c5 x" }( |
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate
/ }8 L# I: C/ uon the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.4 J4 c# @8 j# u; Q2 f
As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data" r0 w5 c) g4 H5 s2 r* j
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show! Q% Y1 d: ~" q
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
$ h; W a) ~; ] }4 f, _% A5 |- gin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and! T& H9 Z4 Y! l( D/ P
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
2 }1 R: c9 O: A; }) N; e. Kand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of6 `0 k/ I4 p+ i) ? K' y
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
0 l+ f" I {: ?: O5 T1 E. b* n' fjournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
