You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
/ X/ {/ B- s7 Q& a, _# Z
% S4 Z' A# X; V* ?+ y0 a8 [% wI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
& l, \3 N! H- v3 u. S& Z$ V9 j0 e1 F
His name was Kyle.
# c- ~  }; [( o+ f3 N) c! W6 o8 W" x& p1 x! \
It looked like he was carrying all of his3 ]; _& Y5 U2 ~/ p. q
Books.
  E; N( m; v4 U. {3 ]& L5 C  ?" z: i* n$ W- |! k$ w4 W
I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?( j' b6 o9 c1 v- a( u6 e4 Z, d3 Y. a
/ I5 `" t. E2 ]
He must really be a nerd."
9 g- c. Q1 t+ Y" `
+ {( O6 V7 T9 U! AI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.
' W. y( N5 S0 \' f$ S" j+ j, p2 N" S7 G
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.! D8 V/ [8 i! G4 ~
  u+ ^" A9 ?, L. b( o. J
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.% b9 J: f5 q2 t9 ^6 s5 v
) `7 X. H! e! F) P! {' C
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.% [7 d; G; D* @3 U4 V
+ Q# H/ J: W6 D5 k( Z$ A7 F3 R
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes* d7 U$ c5 p$ y/ E. |9 z! q0 n: n
0 N9 a( M9 p8 u. V3 e' X3 r. L8 @2 `
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.& e. O% l1 I1 V+ [1 i3 @: G+ r
# {6 E; E7 q- D" d' K: D+ P1 ?4 ~; c
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.  R; ]4 p$ K/ d0 c
3 Y: x" M# }* K2 u) \
They really should get lives.+ L2 g: z; |9 f) W$ \5 B
0 Y- D) }+ k* I( S& H$ k
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!") d5 U! G8 }7 _7 Q' Z
  d9 v. C1 B9 O" ^$ q. W# O
There was a big smile on his face.+ D+ L7 Z; y; u% {
( d$ J& e9 p/ O+ K+ D7 {' H# a
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.! R1 k  q  q8 Y

1 n5 P4 `2 ^1 m- LI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.0 ~* q. m- \+ b- `
) u0 \* C4 |# L+ b, D
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.+ G% R/ v5 T1 D

& x3 Q- \( e5 f3 s( j* P/ f& L. QHe said he had gone to private school before now.
: r: s" ?+ F# H3 v! R+ }
, Z2 p( l% T# DI would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
) Y: i7 @, ~2 d& f2 Y
7 B2 l8 j6 g2 s9 |) XWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books., ?' M+ y! T7 F
' I7 ]. a, Z- [: [4 }2 z' q0 P+ q( U
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.
! t! ~6 |2 g1 m* \; S3 `4 `; F3 g7 A
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.
) r6 c. F+ q0 E. ?+ L3 j; d5 ~' `8 S6 k# `; u
He said yes.5 O: M' P$ ~) K/ |* f# g3 t; }
0 e0 C1 z) X( {# U0 u( R+ }$ u  w/ m
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.* T! E1 y; x; H3 W+ y

' D0 J: t7 R# z4 c8 D8 aMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.
: p6 k+ N& X4 U( T, B& R
- O. \5 ?! M9 i1 [* P3 BI stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!7 g! b% x8 |9 |2 W) T4 \1 f) S
1 Y: i4 V' l6 _2 M6 O5 n+ ]
" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
' C& c; R2 t7 x# }, e2 p5 \: n+ b* h) b
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.7 Z5 p8 O0 @" E! p2 G
# {/ m; s9 G8 ~) K- p; Q# t. e$ L
When we were seniors, we began to think
% \7 ~1 U7 l& ?) ]1 A# v/ _0 ~/ FAbout college.
9 e9 }8 h- k0 }/ S- I6 ]2 C% u* `0 h* L6 I% w
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I
8 c) W* U# R- EWas going to Duke.* }+ \5 ^4 c6 u6 F

8 ?% a  j' d; T$ H4 O% ]& ?I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem./ N( J  b: f* I; K# u$ `
, v. }& L) v' N' m0 Q# l) h- X
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.
( b8 |" R) S# p- Q5 b8 \
& v. _) k1 k+ Q; Y/ L1 H! Y; o6 xKyle was valedictorian of our class.9 [# ~. h6 c) v

& Z! j' T, T1 l! ]( R; ?I teased him all the time about being a nerd.
  w" Z( A8 \7 ~8 v( s0 Q& u' L
( `$ G% g4 B; p3 tHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.5 ^5 F, k) K! p
, e3 M7 @6 X% Z
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
+ U0 H5 `) I6 E& P3 Z% l& t
! T4 }; O8 G. C4 R, GGraduation day, I saw Kyle.
  N! n" i" p! p5 A3 j5 y# u) Y$ b5 D- P! y* F
He looked great.
+ H9 P8 E! C# R# k; k$ N' |# O! g" \5 q) Z# A8 _
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.) t0 L. l3 D/ g2 H. Y4 y

" n: B! T5 S! w# Q2 m- @$ g8 J( @He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.
# C! u6 d- o( U( o0 T- B/ @( T9 ~; ?5 O! b) E8 ^
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.
# ?3 P3 S, T; Y* h' {3 P! `1 ?* a! O2 u" @+ S* _9 T$ W
Boy, sometimes I was jealous./ W% H* n, O/ M
& w, |$ E& W2 k
Today was one of those days.7 Z0 F/ j% p- ?
( r. ?3 b# l+ G) L. X) R! m" y& u
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.& k4 t1 X* v, K

' M& M% k$ d. e9 J9 QSo, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
, X6 e& g2 U6 m8 }( s' j! B: A) m5 n) x$ z4 Z0 V' s
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
1 @) @7 g: d8 g/ l$ a1 R: h: Y' _; z: J0 E8 R2 ]) C' c  T
"Thanks," he said.
9 k* t; K8 u/ d; q6 S' H: R2 F4 j1 I- B* n* F4 s/ m' K9 j/ a
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
9 i9 v4 p3 W% d* y, f5 }( H+ ?1 K. B6 U. A5 ~( `8 ], q7 @- I8 j1 s
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.9 Q* a* D1 y# Y6 u1 N

) E' G- F' l2 JYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...
% J8 I; Y9 |8 p% I  H) ^! C/ O  q2 H% o: ~! R
I am here to tell all of you that being a
" X2 N. L# D9 `Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.
1 r: k# d) a$ d2 J" @) ~9 z; w
5 j1 x8 y+ b' J6 f! k( qI am going to tell you a story."
3 k8 m8 F5 Q  a) I/ A1 G& X) ^* F! B. x4 C7 W$ N
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.9 p6 \( m$ N  i2 j
: Y' `: l( H1 B6 m, d8 }& k
He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
! a" z7 t5 U% R* T
: J9 k( i: M% L3 `( `2 ~( s& b% h. ~He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.8 P: f! U9 ]+ V, p! O. |3 e
9 Y: n# @0 j" E
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.4 k+ n* o: I3 A
  m* E( X0 P1 e  V: j# L
"Thankfully, I was saved.
7 Z4 r8 k: C0 c
  w7 |, k& g; r* \" g( WMy friend saved me from doing the unspeakable.", S" ~+ p% j8 [0 J
# i% y3 i' c- v3 I
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.0 C# }* Q5 l8 t) \. f

% ?. T6 l- R: h2 _. Q& P5 n8 UI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.0 e6 Q8 K5 s1 n0 ^6 i
2 v7 ^+ |9 G/ A$ A: g( x
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.+ K# w. E7 T# t& g8 [- p
: I' p  C9 S) Y8 d0 z4 G* B0 A
Never underestimate the power of your actions.! o% T1 z6 C7 p; Z/ F1 X

2 q" L7 R2 y7 x: G/ v; _) hWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.
. c$ M6 K! O. Y/ ^5 n) _, b
& l4 q) H- F, LFor better or for worse.' v! u$ ~4 w- s3 s3 E" G% ?7 N

. [& ~, p$ x! @- HGod puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.

2 M4 G! y. U( R4 a& JLook for God in others.0 `* b3 g4 q& n) ]' A) k
( \6 \" Y2 J- \% \
You now have two choices, you can:8 n1 B1 Z6 T& c. @
0 ]1 p* M" O! h7 R
1) Pass this on to your friends or
# n( _: |" u: E7 [$ b9 a9 b0 q
7 }3 z4 ]8 ^0 W2 Z% w$ V) L- u2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.

8 v0 _4 j! l( AAs you can see, I took choice number 1.- D( t. Y9 N) @! U5 g
"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."

6 \# T: N1 {, `There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.
