You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,. w- n/ Z$ @; T2 |( b
9 @7 R1 e  _5 c* q# E) E' Z
I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
$ k0 ~7 a! ?2 R6 f" y' O) k% T
8 {3 Z/ @6 V, v2 x  d" `0 z. THis name was Kyle.
6 k. L1 C+ V2 P
- X8 v. H/ Z. BIt looked like he was carrying all of his/ G) w8 q* I3 r' T1 y' r' u
Books.
6 ^& Y3 k( z( R
3 w+ }* ^- _- i9 GI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
  \# Q# y- A% j; C  s3 s) }0 [5 A! |, D; p+ _0 y
He must really be a nerd."3 K' s* Z3 H8 f1 W
; E- V: `; `+ h2 p
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on." U) B/ N  Z* b. w' ^# _
6 G5 U7 G7 o% O
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
2 M6 B7 g/ t; D7 F8 s: H% E$ c; s
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.! q! z! e$ T" V& t' Z
3 M3 w/ {( V/ e3 u) m8 f
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
  i6 E/ U" W  j: u( d) M9 E0 `7 \0 p: X  W$ a' i
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes9 x: r6 ?* Q0 Z7 U

- i2 l% j' s% V8 \# ?My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.
# R6 Q( r3 |) }* }& Y
5 ?3 L+ o2 q& Z7 M  m1 I9 y" gAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.3 u- Z  t# V8 [# f

- r  E- e/ s$ XThey really should get lives.. U0 m3 D) t, F' E/ ]9 M
3 J$ n0 t2 ?) A1 |7 _: U
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"& p* ~% f0 j/ C9 N* r- e1 ?

+ l+ X& Y  o" `7 _There was a big smile on his face.
" C! J1 {% e$ s6 T5 K
9 i3 G3 B& [8 ]* I* [& ]It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
' P5 I6 F8 q" x. t# v8 Q& Z! d. r& U0 E4 K& m
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.
1 a+ p- F$ r% J$ O
( }) D$ K! y+ y9 b) ~# WAs it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.
' P1 R! q) C3 j/ M7 ^0 E+ |- s7 C6 P6 V" ]% N: S# o
He said he had gone to private school before now.0 q1 H; m! t' B. d+ l
! c5 ?* m9 Z) P% e/ s
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
5 G6 p& F% O- _2 r/ J/ O2 u2 t' _8 ^" P  }
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
/ g0 J0 b+ d% V6 h
, J. D$ j5 y7 q) I3 R$ M7 f- A: wHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid.. d$ O% i3 }" j" S. y

0 }1 t* p! k% r2 ~0 I) DI asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.
, l( l& S- [! M# q0 s" e/ `0 c) m2 @/ i0 m; g4 X' L. o* z
He said yes.
- W, h. b% V% J% I  C
7 `+ [/ s! ~4 D( w3 @; r* H5 XWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.5 S3 p& P; i* J& L
" t" b, E5 w3 X) }, u% q# x
Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.
- `1 O3 J4 R- M8 p. ^+ |/ b# A
+ }2 h+ Z1 E& ?6 q" R- H7 F& M6 e0 \I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!% h1 v+ J3 u: c8 c1 v9 B# @

' a" G( f% R& s4 d& l" He just laughed and handed me half the books.) p) {1 v# U% W1 N9 z$ [/ C
% P- ]' o0 M6 P2 G
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.0 \& }  p, D. E6 k# k/ _% A/ R
/ D' c( v8 c& r
When we were seniors, we began to think
$ ]  L1 b' U! r5 y" `3 bAbout college.
' @2 p" Y& L/ b+ s% v. w+ [2 X, O/ A; [2 b8 s0 j8 }7 P
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I2 U% d' J# p$ p" w1 ?
Was going to Duke.
1 p6 K2 m7 {3 S- t8 \) Q7 r0 U9 x7 s' {: ]" Z1 \2 T
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.; F1 i$ |% |- ?' k7 i. w2 o

. B$ F3 O- c( u" BHe was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.- U' ?( R! v' F8 w

; A3 H' b' k5 {9 ~. \+ QKyle was valedictorian of our class.2 c; {# y' {' o

) v% j' }' ]9 {9 x) O' ~I teased him all the time about being a nerd.3 i4 W* u" ]& a$ f

" o1 U- [( S/ r8 C- M7 bHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.
0 N  _6 w" T- {6 z4 A/ G& j3 F' k- t/ ]  T, k7 I1 O
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak$ z' H$ |$ A& t! Y, d2 C
, d' f& w8 F- _' Q% R* z; n- o; K: Y
Graduation day, I saw Kyle.: t5 k, j1 y( k2 x& w; C2 l

) y0 v5 D+ b0 j$ F, V8 [0 fHe looked great.
# H( t; d8 R; ^9 v( k3 h8 S
+ \! f4 m  O: h' [He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.3 C" [) n: O, w2 p0 M) s8 V) z
* f0 d7 y5 z6 Z% |/ V. P
He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.2 z& g* Y+ i: m! u& ?' p. ]
2 ]. R+ x+ ~5 ?
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.
+ k. R# t* t  D( |* n1 H6 {( D6 V% A% ^, `' E7 `1 M
Boy, sometimes I was jealous.! S: `7 @" Z! i$ j6 n! w# Q
, X+ v1 T) p/ S9 j$ h
Today was one of those days.
. W( P" ]2 L" Z
& [: r8 Z8 j" ^/ nI could see that he was nervous about his speech., Q* N) r0 D7 }$ K0 b
. w$ V- i* p( B3 W
So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"% U) }9 Q9 V3 I! U! t3 U

' \) d  [3 C# T/ b0 fHe looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled." E. O2 g; A( z2 q7 M# v# X

3 T4 w7 d0 J$ `9 @+ ^2 |: Y& ["Thanks," he said.

8 x0 W2 \; H( [) `As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
* J9 d- @5 h! U' `* \% V, I" n# g& s8 l* W! K( N! r
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.: V) T! S0 W' F4 c4 J5 l7 a
0 N" p" y8 v2 d8 H0 q/ S, W# b
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...2 b  L1 }8 C/ m

4 _1 _  ^  T3 J6 U7 u; G6 ?I am here to tell all of you that being a
% K3 a# E* m" d. s/ F7 T# mFriend to someone is the best gift you can give them.
4 ^" q$ g- ^4 x; t: t; J: G3 g. c, O" m/ L7 v! o) `8 S" v" x* u# P
I am going to tell you a story."  G  e' \! |: ]; J. i. R. G1 ]

1 B, _" u" y3 oI just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.# W4 B- R, ^7 F4 K- I& q4 f; |. z

7 [, _" l  U* y* dHe had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
. j, A  m. w* z8 D6 A" X, {! y$ d5 ?. V" u" V
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
0 F; u  K' F% ^4 Q" \* K$ d- N) L: T- k& i7 X
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.: ]. t& h0 X; W2 y1 v' N

. U0 v9 O" r  T, p& z, \"Thankfully, I was saved.
1 V1 [$ J1 i/ h& s) N" b' D" ]4 C, y
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
; S4 |; T) r" q  R) f" e5 z6 ^( m
0 [* G7 e4 x7 M+ W  uI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
! b7 v5 Q3 u/ q3 J" k
0 c. f8 ~$ y6 b' @I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.: f; r; \0 k6 Z, L

7 I; W* y* W$ [- [3 ONot until that moment did I realize it's depth.6 \: c! s9 \' f+ l" w  |
" ?* y: r, I# \6 u
Never underestimate the power of your actions.
8 L5 Q! D+ |/ [6 F1 Y. w
. E7 [8 k$ J- R7 sWith one small gesture you can change a person's life./ l3 m& r+ v: O1 Y6 ^  |1 p; z7 [% G

, I; T4 a& Q% X. `, N4 \" jFor better or for worse.8 ]7 N  b" z% \4 l1 F- b
4 ^  y" _" I5 ?6 F' Y5 H
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.4 F8 A; |& y  y) X

Look for God in others.

0 ?/ Z" ^) K4 y: ]1 a: G% x# g8 TAs you can see, I took choice number 1.6 `- V  p+ e" _+ S
"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."

; s2 X- g2 D3 X2 dThere is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.
