Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are7 h$ ^1 w5 b% d# O! _2 I+ n/ c
an increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving/ s" \: }+ p0 W. K
innovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops
( M0 b) o( Q5 R2 k6 RCanada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look
" B7 E# Y$ P5 C' k9 I# Zcarefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be
+ O& Z! m* X3 P0 |guided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and- H$ M6 X5 \$ d6 G, m
investment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing/ j8 j3 A U2 K: m8 C1 x. F
market forces to prevail.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has% x$ i5 {0 u2 E
chosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large
- m& j- W! o% u4 B5 nnumber of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at

When the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the! \$ o4 ?9 @3 b2 @: g
government will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in
4 k& G6 F) W5 {# c9 }line with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages u$ W; `7 y5 h* y. G* w
competition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that
( ]8 w) i1 b8 _& t7 fany decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.5 k0 H# ]* k& q3 i" [8 f9 j: j
