Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are8 [7 g1 }/ Y: _5 s0 A
an increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving
3 H7 H, ?6 Z3 U X" ginnovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops/ y# Y/ S% E: l2 T
Canada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look
' Y8 f; p& M4 V5 l& ~& P1 Tcarefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be
, y# t/ A$ D. B, W* F. u9 F3 Lguided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and5 L r8 x# e4 q$ R+ m
investment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing
0 H, u7 X1 A6 [market forces to prevail. - b7 D+ Q [# b5 G
% d% R J+ o6 b! a% X9 Q
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has+ b8 X6 k8 `0 ]7 J3 c. n$ I3 R3 U" \
chosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large9 R1 N" s; h2 R" |8 U6 x

When the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the
! H/ m% n( i7 x0 [government will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in+ ^0 I% T; ~% {; e/ f! J0 j
line with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages
+ @6 c. `" b; }% i, a- j+ t) W1 D* Tcompetition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that! ]3 J1 o& d, Z3 H4 _- E
any decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.! P6 o* X7 L( s' \- p _. d
