on the issues that matter. Prime Minister Harper and I have been clear
! f3 z" V' H4 ~1 C. \# J5 ithat we cannot support imposing a UBB business model on wholesale Internet( @ i7 [: N1 h; u) s$ D! \
service providers.

Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are
" r y$ \( q; M6 [) r! Zan increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving
% f: C' z) S W4 r7 ~% Zinnovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops: G, s: L3 W) n4 X* [+ n5 P' [/ Y
Canada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look
a" E1 S9 B4 l7 x: ^7 s3 ^( Ecarefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be' x3 p# ?7 V' J% l) P/ N0 A7 }" X$ S
guided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and% f4 b- T2 }# T$ _1 W1 F9 h @5 W" M
investment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing
* i* o9 E' g' x. n, _$ {( Fmarket forces to prevail.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has+ |9 g) Q2 p% H' t
chosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large3 y7 Z. ]- D( x
number of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at

When the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the
$ w; ]& U+ e- g' G |government will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in$ ?! a5 s! p' }4 g+ r8 O% y
line with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages
: V6 z" I/ V. Rcompetition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that
1 d- J" V; s* I, g. Y8 q9 W9 U0 Zany decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed. E2 V- ]# x* s
