Roles and Functions
+ T$ W- [; p" J2 U1 e: iThe Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the$ i2 h R4 g( i; _; S/ a
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the
, { @1 p6 x" O, `. b9 L; d" g, j: ooperations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has
/ y2 v" g: A$ Wthe important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,
+ W' G1 p8 M# xoperational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular
8 z4 j! b9 Q: F, q- eboard meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is
" Y4 |. l* R0 [. T8 }( k. {* M2 kconducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an8 z; a8 d6 ?0 F/ b k
employee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires" J! R/ _' L ]% M" u& _; v% p
staff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend' ?$ c/ S3 E2 T0 Y! @0 r
all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.% \# r0 G# |. i6 J1 x$ E: P3 r

Functions and responsibilities:

. @4 W% ]* k& x( o1 c& P1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the
5 ?1 @/ h. v1 Kofficers of the Coalition
1 @6 j( ?" u0 u: w2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural
3 f6 n8 `6 M L3 [5 t) jorganizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations( c+ H: ~9 {1 u1 J% L2 W$ ~
and public institutions
$ }7 z2 E( H' H. \, u3 ]4 \3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through$ u5 o1 }- y% X# q1 E6 V" X! h: E) x. B
funding opportunities and maintaining initiatives
+ `% y, ?: @! @' H6 S9 g4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community

Administrative responsibilities:
; L0 ~8 w+ }. C1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its
# {5 q, I+ T- H- ?) c1 s, ^/ @regular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of
" i7 s, S7 A d* I7 S- Z' Odirectors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the1 F2 B' [7 K5 F- V. _6 T) R
members of the Coalition’s financial condition.' N9 k2 x1 y. Q$ `* y$ w
2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the8 Y( O: M( k9 o
Multicultural Coalition
, q, P/ ?: i7 Z ~# fRelationship of the Coordinator to the Board
7 o. k& c, e; a! QAll operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to
' n- f# S& b1 B( g2 Rimplement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating# I+ N1 O0 r+ p/ y4 O
operations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
9 _# P. \3 o1 [- b+ r8 jThe Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and
" e f8 ^8 p% w( oaims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should
- n w6 T3 a( o6 P1 zbe noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership+ d* }/ r# s" u9 Q
participation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and( y$ l. [! u( \4 S
facilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of
. i) }& i. \0 S. r2 e% H4 l% [& g7 Jdirectors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial1 Y) [6 F. \7 z1 N v
statement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all
% ?+ @" S3 F3 _ Vmatters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of, N8 g+ ?' W" E9 E8 ~
directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of
