圣诞节快到了,爱城各种迎接圣诞的活动的确是精彩纷呈。0 v0 h% ]- s9 Z# c! t

Already feeling the inexorable pull of the holiday season? That's because Christmas has somehow now spread to include the month preceding it, which is why we at The Journal have compiled a list of upcoming holiday concerts in the middle of November. You certainly can't question this city's commitment to the holiday. Barely a day will go by from the end of this month onward that won't have a concert or event attached to it. And many of them are quite reasonably priced, sometimes even free, so there's no excuse for not checking out a festive few. Keep in mind that this is just the tip of the iceberg:

. w2 w9 `. v6 u) t; y7 x- Festival Place in Sherwood Park hosts the Sandro Dominelli Trio and their Very Jazzy Christmas on Friday, Nov. 27 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $26 to $30, available at 780-449-3378.

[- It's an Edmonton tradition, and therefore an essential event: Friday, Nov. 27 starts the run of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol at the Citadel's Maclab Theatre that continues through Wednesday, Dec. 23. - The Royal Canadian Artillery Band boasts a program of big band, bagpipes and seasonal music with A Christmas Wish at the Winspear. It's on Saturday, Nov. 28 at 2 p.m., with tickets priced between $5 and $10, available at the Winspear box office.

- The Ariose Women's Choir boasts a program of traditional and contemporary seasonal works on Saturday, Nov. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 10037 84th Ave., including Michael Haydn's Vesperae pro Festo Sancti Innocentium. : f  y0 v: a3 q  N' j& P- Also on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 29 at 3 p.m., McDougall United Church at 10025 101st St. hosts the Concordia Concert Choir, Community Chorus, Ringers, High School choir and the Bella Voce Women's Choir for a Christmas concert and audience carolling. ) X0 ]% |$ c9 l7 L5 r- Monday, Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m. the Winspear hosts the University of Alberta Mixed Chorus, U of A Faculty of Education Handbell Ringers, plus organists Marnie Giesbrecht and Joachim Seggar for the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, a benefit performance for the U of A campus Food Bank. Tickets are $10, available at the Winspear box office.

- Handel's Messiah on Friday, Dec. 4, and Saturday, Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the Winspear is very much an Edmonton tradition. This year, Jean-Marie Zeitouni is the conductor, with special guests soprano Helene Guilmette, mezzo-soprano Daniela Mack, mezzo-soprano-tenor Colin Balzer, bass Stephen Hegedus, the University of Alberta Madrigal Singers and i Coristi Chamber Choir. - If a singalong Messiah is your cup of tea, the Robert Tegler Student Centre on 73rd Street and 112th Avenue has Concordia Symphony Orchestra providing the musical accompaniment for it, also Sunday, Dec. 6 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $10 for the honour, available at the door or from Tix on the Square.

9 t  n: ~# G' ]* N" s) `- The action-packed Sunday also sees the Da Camera Singers performing at 3p.m. and 7:30 p.m. for their Music for a Festive Season at Robertson-Wesley United Church, 10209 123rd St. They'll join with the Alberta Baroque Ensemble on Haydn's Little Organ Mass and the Advent Cantata Wachet Auf by J.S. Bach. Tickets are $18 to $23, available at the Gramophone, Tix on the Square, at the door, or by phone, 780-467-6531.

- It just wouldn't be Christmas without The Nutcracker, which takes starts at the Jubilee Auditorium that Thursday. Dec. 10 and ends Sunday, Dec. 13. Now in its 13th year, the Christmas Carol Project at the Winspear still packs them in for a unique take on the Dickens classic. Local musicians Bill Bourne and Maria Dunn are still mainstays for the show, which runs on Saturday, Dec. 12 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $27 in advance, $32 at the door.! x" o# N* n# K  P, K* u  W

On Sunday, Dec. 13, conductor and artistic director Richard Sparks will be taking Pro Coro through A Pro Coro Christmas, including a hotly anticipated new work by composer Allan Bevans. It takes place at 2:30 p.m. at the Winspear. Tickets are $29 to $49, available at the Winspear box office.

7 Q# I+ ?" Z# X4 o! H$ W, N6 IThe ESO's Lightly Classical Christmas program on Thursday, Dec. 17 at 8 p.m. sees the orchestra tackling Tchaikovsky, Vaughan Williams and Handel. Steven Reineke is conducting, baritone Nathan Berg and the Richard Eaton Singers are guests. That takes place at their headquarters in the Winspear; tickets are $20 to $69, available at the Winspear box office.

Rockers will be pleased to know that this year's Jingle Bell Rock on Friday, Dec. 18 at the Shaw Conference Centre, 9797 Jasper Ave., will be hosting AFI and Cage the Elephant. It starts at 7 p.m., with the $40 tickets available at Ticketmaster.- ^8 m9 o$ X; X0 x

If you're looking for a lunchtime treat downtown on Friday, Dec. 18, the Winspear is hosting 16 choirs for the Christmas Bureau Carol Singalong at noon. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.
