 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

to their first ministry, to reopen a church
p% X! W {/ ]6 H: Iin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
" F: f8 g; ~& ~! P( P# J+ y9 sexcited about their opportunities. When they saw * B% X. l/ G. Z) ]* X0 y3 K
their church, it was very run down and needed
2 j' R# J/ h/ e4 e/ Z4 l/ mmuch work. They set a goal to have everything - D' A9 D8 w: o; g4 V
done in time to have their first service * ?3 o; u9 S7 J! n: f6 \5 Q
on Christmas Eve. 6 ^8 f% K5 b% l9 T
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,* z; T" \( h: z$ R( z7 S' v
painting, etc, and on December 18 * m, M1 ^; M* x, T
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. " b( u) }# h( a
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
B8 ], @, f* [9 q8 Z0 Hrainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. / ^. B8 o+ E4 D" a( H) Y
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.5 O6 f8 F* ^$ f4 v
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
- ^1 V( \1 p; s) }/ K% n/ Pleaked, causing a large area of plaster about
6 k# _0 x4 F) l/ C6 U$ j20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
( z/ U+ U$ `- l6 h6 Wof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, 9 b; O6 J% n7 w& n, ~
beginning about head high. : S' U( e( Q4 ?9 s$ ?4 p
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, % p' X A. w" R2 N T9 [3 E
and not knowing what else to do but postpone 4 q8 W1 g/ a7 k; D& e" L
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
' z t+ s5 r, Z8 i& f- q8 rOn the way he noticed that a local business was # b0 R7 K1 R1 _4 F
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he , k" A, z! T' e' N6 _/ M. {% e- ?# L
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
5 I5 D" o% g! V0 X9 I, E m1 \handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
" h! w0 x& C/ L! Z8 X! Fwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
- z I! ?1 J1 `embroidered right in the center. It was just 1 k) q8 Q) @1 P$ _8 t- [
& [/ y$ j6 t7 b* {' ?
# m5 ^1 v$ H- k v2 w: U$ H 2 i8 j. q) t' Z$ w+ f$ F, d
: K9 X- x% e6 r! `# A3 p4 F, ^3 v. K W

the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
+ ~, m5 L5 ^3 v" n0 a u8 |B y this time it had started to snow. An older
3 l6 h" ^3 F2 M7 C9 p- |woman running from the opposite direction was , j9 i! q! s5 m/ v1 E8 P6 K
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor ) {% H# y3 q# l( y9 x
invited her to wait in the warm church for . T: P& @/ ^2 K$ H# z5 z) r, s
the next bus 45 minutes later.
# L" w& H# P# q3 C. E4 ^2 U- b7 L* \( ]% ~. ?. C. r
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor 1 `- I& m4 f- g$ U
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
* E# i8 ~& j8 x2 j/ @) {up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor " Y- C& E5 B: w* B$ \* U* l
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
; L- z% u" l. Y: [, m1 Y5 c+ TT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
3 X$ W$ v- |) raisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
7 J& T& R& P# t' {she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
$ P: \+ `$ `% m5 a! S+ mThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
d9 l" X4 t* a; n# nthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
; v/ }3 b7 ~ Z8 r( yit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had ) P8 i: Q1 y" k) R5 e* j# J
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
7 }. O( E0 _: j6 O$ @) W+ dT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor ! _3 O- g# W0 ?; `( s9 q9 b
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
7 O2 C+ k; @) g( k2 k, i8 awoman explained that before the war she and
; S6 H9 B: e+ l" b4 @her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . , `% B/ T- T( k& \5 |8 D! u3 y
7 a5 ]' H* v0 f$ K. iWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
' j0 V0 [; A' U% D( T% J3 N; sHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
: ?- T0 p5 V/ BHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
% a: m; K& D% f2 m+ vhusband or her home again. 4 Z: n8 B/ z B1 k* e
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;7 Z9 W9 l; Q4 v+ n
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
" e/ {0 k/ w" O7 ^# r1 mThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That) m. L3 | t5 E9 k$ u- B" }3 v
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
0 p/ P7 I# _% J, ?' B* O3 xside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
* r5 Q; P; g) p+ M! C+ L& `7 f$ w0 rfor the day for a housecleaning job.3 G/ ?$ W4 G+ l* z+ b2 b# u- p; E
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas 2 A: D. N& V) m% i% n8 p
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
2 c f1 G, i- A0 l) [spirit were great. At the end of the service, the 5 t Q8 [% r8 r( i% t2 w8 M! Y4 e7 B
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door " J7 r. C, X9 l5 W7 l T; ?, {- ]
and many said that they would return.. 2 J& \+ G) s4 D0 K/ L( M# V1 ]
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
1 D& A: R" q# k6 B- O tfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the . U4 u" {' i, N$ H. B) P) X
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
% S2 q7 S7 _# e7 iwasn't leaving. + T. M$ s9 b: D/ k1 d) m
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
6 t+ x X2 \8 l' B7 @the front wall because it was identical to one
. ^. M; G. X) wthat his wife had made years ago when o2 m0 E7 L" J4 A6 H. i
they lived in Austria before the war and how
: Y1 H. b$ q- v% ^could there be two tablecloths so much alike? $ G& M9 U: t$ b( w) W5 I
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he 6 z) P: Z9 N5 g
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was ' d* C. Q4 @( X1 z, o" B
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and0 u7 U% @" F* d; s3 e0 t, n1 P
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
3 t! P/ @& t u% L7 w/ d: Jagain all the 35 years between. ' J7 |0 ?. Y' \
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to # G" }0 X7 M) |( @9 {; }. d2 L
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
6 m8 u- T% ^+ `1 H( X ]( JIsland and to the same house where the pastor : }% u. ~. c d& \. }4 A
had taken the woman three days earlier.
7 {, j% Z: z& X" p6 ]% LHe helped the man climb the three flights of
2 q1 k j2 T' R! w" mstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
; \3 h o2 z3 b( f- lthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas + U3 x; K: T1 D2 `! X; L* v0 j
reunion he could ever imagine.+ s: e- p$ l9 v) |0 E9 r

difficult at best, just remember I'm here # E4 Q# Y* @( u1 O3 r1 S
