 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason I/ L( H1 t/ Q' w, T4 i! H

' [$ r* ^7 l- D: L1 Z! h, yto their first ministry, to reopen a church 6 z1 x; L' U* d: p6 D7 t& r7 ?
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
9 z$ U$ W8 y7 i: `% h0 K0 n- Nexcited about their opportunities. When they saw $ O' b4 k6 L: b8 k" e5 |: [! h; B
their church, it was very run down and needed / M5 G, m" U; H
much work. They set a goal to have everything
4 H X" x5 V: ?; T1 Jdone in time to have their first service
1 d$ R+ | E qon Christmas Eve. & }, F$ t D9 v5 S
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,, y+ [# ]3 [4 i$ H' P2 p* V' t
painting, etc, and on December 18
1 ]; I7 C2 D" g( ]) mwere ahead of schedule and just about finished. ! d o$ [- I6 K+ ?4 t: q$ o
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
8 O$ M0 H; k q1 Y3 F) Jrainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. 4 \/ E% o* J, v% U0 T- f# K
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
5 D" a9 F2 R4 K8 s: @6 |8 z7 ]! xHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had/ y3 a Q Z; R8 u; I' r
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about : L! {8 B- q% B t( t O& t% q
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 9 }( R9 z9 e4 _0 W- _
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, / V5 s# f1 f! D, b0 s' X
beginning about head high.
0 s2 E5 h7 [! PT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, 0 x4 p5 g$ b3 U$ d
and not knowing what else to do but postpone 3 c% A; v& z: X4 z1 y n+ x7 ~
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. , _* \# e i3 i
On the way he noticed that a local business was 2 X. _$ |& D' ? d3 u
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
, F% h+ D4 o; p" W' f" O7 {stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
' _0 p6 d/ G1 k7 W/ N1 uhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
' t7 L+ y( R! P* K% z: twith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 0 |: o2 g% G1 v& l3 b" w
embroidered right in the center. It was just 7 j1 _' ]8 B; U# p" F9 Q
- @/ n* L/ i$ t. [' C3 R5 M
* C- g1 n/ f( h! c( q6 A }8 \
* T& \+ C! W6 `1 w2 J* \5 b, f2 d( j( B% C) X$ ^+ f
9 s" y% z% p3 g% [3 y& _
- M6 Q: o( }" v3 Z% y5 u8 bthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. $ {4 I7 t4 H0 u0 o8 [9 w( l
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
y q9 Z3 F* j# @0 A! ywoman running from the opposite direction was
4 ?2 |8 |5 N. q: ~trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor $ X" ]# j' } L. `
invited her to wait in the warm church for 6 H6 S0 X8 w& W
the next bus 45 minutes later. & H) z3 U8 l7 T

She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
$ q# T( a# N, P. U4 J% @4 F$ Zwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
+ |5 }2 u: u* r6 u( a! E2 zup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor , D; j/ t) Z2 u' k+ I( T8 }1 Q
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. 3 k% o# T3 a& l2 S9 { G
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center- O) `) N1 Z, A
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"% E L Y; M6 o& D7 x0 H
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" + B- l; @& _% \1 H' G ^& b
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check+ s1 R8 s2 u5 g5 z7 Z
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
8 r& x2 E) g! o# Q1 d& j; Y8 dit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had 9 c% p* F6 p. a$ [- r( O' Z
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . ) S1 a5 k+ f- w) f/ {
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
a. a$ V4 |$ D( K- }* {' ytold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The + b% u! c, \0 _6 m; }
woman explained that before the war she and 2 F5 x7 Z$ ^- U( C
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . 4 s9 j0 j! _2 Y$ Y3 h
5 F/ n) t @; h `When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
9 e5 y% ^* {6 N4 bHer husband was going to follow her the next week. 7 j/ U4 _1 y6 U# b, t6 R
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
; L) U1 ]! ~/ D0 r/ H( l7 K! bhusband or her home again.
) B) p! T; [% i) |T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
0 y* Y/ _4 h' x2 Y0 |7 x) }2 Obut she made the pastor keep it for the church.) i3 i, a2 x) u* s' K
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That- t: n# G, |( R+ E, B" n; u6 W+ ~
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
" V9 x0 x5 L6 D' iside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
. c0 ?/ b0 l- @; f7 ~2 z+ vfor the day for a housecleaning job.3 f1 G# Q- d9 |& a# J, ^
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas ( d6 J# r6 B: L7 U9 |1 D5 @/ k
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the " U3 |/ Q4 d3 O3 x, ]& y' f
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the 6 G; q9 }+ }% M
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
: x$ \+ s$ I6 @ g6 ?and many said that they would return.. / u. \+ N: S* S" J2 z
One older man, whom the pastor recognized , {3 X/ [$ K l+ ]
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the + I9 T8 g& E# \! B% _
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
% w4 H4 x$ c d5 Dwasn't leaving.
: k' F, g1 T$ J. z# mThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
* o- I( U" B2 t+ }the front wall because it was identical to one ; o S1 i7 R4 L
that his wife had made years ago when
: a5 y* n z- I9 a3 Zthey lived in Austria before the war and how % K- A ^4 `/ Y) I3 k E
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
) \" Y0 q ?+ ~2 l# }, wH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
7 ^6 _( S$ `7 T% Lforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
% D' P; s' h: q5 \4 usupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
p, Z: G. t. u! L- |/ w# Jput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home# d( H- W5 G9 z9 S& A3 Z
again all the 35 years between.
" j' H' G) {, I# y0 A6 X* DT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
% G8 _3 A: Q! X1 |% ~take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten - X6 \% Y- ~) D5 r
Island and to the same house where the pastor
L4 m( G& S1 C9 Y. j" ihad taken the woman three days earlier.
( Y9 M, ]! P" t6 ^. RHe helped the man climb the three flights of
( l$ ~( q8 J H' Nstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on$ @+ B' S. n: I" Y
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas ) M8 B0 ~, O. I
reunion he could ever imagine.% `9 j7 w) ^/ p
