- t( V$ O- _) i一篇著名的小小说,很funny。盼望和能读下来的大侠求教一个问题:Who is the chief or Printer‘s boy's master?

AS it is well known that the 'wise men' in the Bible came 'from the East,' and as Mr. Touch-and-go Bullet-head came from the East,  Mr. Bullet-head was therefore a wise man; and if further proof of the matter is  needed, here we have it- Mr. B. was an editor. A bad temper was his only weakness; he did not consider  his inablility ever to changer his mind a weakness. It was, his firmly believed, his strong point.
  O( P  V  c/ ^* j2 d" n0 t   I have shown that Touch-and-go Bullet-head was a wise man; and the only occasion on which he was not wise was when, leaving the proper home for all wise men, the East, he moved to the city of Alexander-the-Great-o-nopolis, or some place of a similar title, out West.

# R* a  L" B! Y, Udreamed of taking up his residence in Alexander-the-Great-o-nopolis+ I% c& `0 G# \9 N( G/ N
had he been aware that, in Alexander-the-Great-o-nopolis, there lived  P! Z+ c, j6 }* R  K. l
a gentleman named John Smith (if I rightly remember), who for many$ n- X5 N5 w, x9 z) t. g
years had there quietly grown fat in editing and publishing the$ K8 g6 f; b. [6 k# \
'Alexander-the-Great-o-nopolis Daily News.' It was solely, therefore, on$ }) e& ]. e, Z1 P0 ]
account of having been misinformed, that Mr. Bullet-head found
( H% w0 V3 y' {1 Z9 xhimself in Alex-suppose we call it Nopolis, 'for short' -- but, as he
% A7 i2 B& F0 x. J5 i. \did find himself there, he determined to keep up his character for
9 [+ A; e  k& Z1 h) Y: `obst -- for firmness, and remain. So remain he did; and he did more;+ M) ~9 N% H( d9 k6 _% U1 e% U
he unpacked his press, type, etc., etc., rented an office exactly8 O6 p8 X/ w+ j# ~, i0 f
opposite to that of the 'Daily News,' and, on the third morning after
7 M! s. J; Y" F: D6 a$ g+ q# U4 G+ Yhis arrival, issued the first number of 'The Alexan' -- that is to
" N1 R& S8 x! H  O3 @% Zsay, of 'The Nopolis Tea-Pot' -- as nearly as I can recollect, this
  F3 Y6 _! g! g6 p# P1 M; Dwas the name of the new paper.# W0 [, V1 I& \1 W( Z0 {

The leading article, I must admit, was brilliant -- not to say+ f8 S7 N! h$ o! }3 j6 y# E5 n  i
severe. It was especially bitter about things in general -- and as
* `: }0 _' z# g: V. K4 nfor the editor of 'The Daily News,' he was torn all to pieces in' X- |! h+ y; f2 M8 ?
particular. Some of Bullethead's remarks were really so fiery that I
6 S# b) @# R' _& Whave always, since that time, been forced to look upon John Smith,4 q3 Y' P% N: G$ y# a. X
who is still alive, in the light of a salamander. I cannot pretend to# d% ?9 a1 ^3 F# I6 A
give all the 'Tea-Pot's' paragraphs verbatim, but one of them runs

' l* J. u, b0 m  K- N  L( e  Ubombshell among the hitherto peaceful citizens of Nopolis. Groups of* N, ?1 x6 J" j: x! J9 [' x
excited individuals gathered at the corners of the streets. Every one0 ]) `/ m' H- Q2 V
awaited, with heartfelt anxiety, the reply of the dignified Smith.0 k( V. @) V% j6 B1 l
Next morning it appeared as follows:

'We quote from "The Tea-Pot" of yesterday the subjoined paragraph:

nor end to him, nor to anything he says. We really do not believe the. |2 C2 u0 f: E
vagabond can write a word that hasn't an O in it. Wonder if this

The indignation of Mr. Bullet-head at these scandalous insinuations,

- u  s; X+ U0 j, n' C( ahowever, he did not seem to be so much incensed at the attack upon
! N. i6 K* e+ Y7 ahis integrity as one might have imagined. It was the sneer at his
& \% P2 R6 C+ O( v  l. [5 V; ]style that drove him to desperation. What! -- he Touch-and-go
9 Q. m* ]5 L# W2 aBullet-head! -- not able to write a word without an O in it! He would
2 O( H% v$ ~4 G& V% Dsoon let the jackanapes see that he was mistaken. Yes! he would let0 b% Q$ R6 I/ u5 a+ C
him see how much he was mistaken, the puppy! He, Touch-and-go
) e9 X" w4 d! t0 gBullet-head, of Frogpondium, would let Mr. John Smith perceive that
( {8 ?+ B) [# A6 M. Vhe, Bullet-head, could indite, if it so pleased him, a whole
5 a7 J2 {/ f$ V6 R" rparagraph -- aye! a whole article -- in which that contemptible vowel
/ `& E4 J0 n( i4 f- Vshould not once -- not even once -- make its appearance. But no; --
3 b9 g8 Z8 Z8 a: C1 O$ ^  m; X" _8 |that would be yielding a point to the said John Smith. He,
4 z. k; X0 z6 e! @% RBullet-head, would make no alteration in his style, to suit the
/ ]2 `! B' l7 M9 g  U) U8 _+ pcaprices of any Mr. Smith in Christendom. Perish so vile a thought!
. r! r% w8 m1 `  @The O forever; He would persist in the O. He would be as O-wy as O-wy  u! A6 _: a8 ~& n9 i
could be.

vowel -- the emblem of Eternity -- yet so offensive to the

In fulfilment of the awful threat thus darkly intimated rather than

midnight oil, and absorbed in the composition of the really

Tired out, of course, by so wonderful a piece of work, the great
$ s9 D4 H( v9 J4 y) eTouch-and-go could do nothing more than that night.  He handed his article to
0 N; f5 N3 s3 P  `the printer's boy who was waiting, and walked slowly home to bed.
. Y: V. _7 p$ v2 i! i* u& r' I6 b' r# W
The printer's boy to whom the article was trusted ran upstairs  in a great hurry and prepared to set the article in print.

In the first place, of course, -- as the opening word was 'So,' -- he2 K0 ?. ~. o/ X7 l* q
looked for and found a capital S. Pleased with this success, he immediately threw himself upon the box where the little-o box were kept -- but who can) k- N! h8 ~. g# t- b/ ], W7 R* p5 P, x
describe his feelings of horror when his fingers came out of it without a
* E7 I' d) t/ l+ g& R5 M7 o8 nletter in them? who can tell of his astonishment and anger when he realized that the little box was completely empty?  Not a single; S; V# T9 i6 w, D1 V5 n& H
little-o was in the little-o box; and, glancing fearfully at the
$ J* g4 k' D+ v" Z' z: s3 i  t& Zcapital-O box, he found that in exactly the same state--empty.  He ran to his master.

not to be conceived. The first definite idea entertained by the

gentleman was nowhere to be found. He had vanished, no one could tell
