EDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.( u- M3 T* B" i# X' f( E
"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.4 u; g4 [/ @8 r; M; y9 a* k
The population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.

; n2 U7 h7 S. z2 |9 g"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said.

This year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
