Master Composter/Recycler Program / Free!

7 {! E+ R+ M8 e& U$ aDear colleague: once a year, the Waste Management Branch hosts the
, B% U- j8 A7 K2 A; \% |Master Composter-Recycler Program. Over a 3 weeks course schedule( V. ?. `- {% B( j- _- x# r2 S/ r$ W
(Tues./Thursday evenings and Saturday) volunteers will learn about
O3 Z; Q/ ]+ R$ x. D4 menvironmental stewardship in our city, such as: history of waste
( Y; s7 P) m1 ?' n& H5 ^0 C7 d, kmanagement; home composting; household hazardous waste; \' A! ?- t* k
vermin-composting and residential recycling.3 ~0 R* {% t: c3 ^2 O
( J! t/ f& v5 y8 n
This course offers in-class instruction as well as several field trips; [! J9 [4 {/ ?* R$ X( G
to various City facilities. After finishing the course, graduates
! p. ?9 A N+ c1 M& Dcomplete 35 hours of volunteer activity promoting the four R's:
" Y# b& D4 R5 j0 C9 q" Ereduce, reuse, recycle and recover. Graduates become important, A; [, A2 m- J; A2 R
resources in their communities as they broaden awareness about the
9 ]$ w5 _; S& t: a F- _importance of composting and recycling.
# p0 @0 w! r$ {# q! y7 g3 t( d g, } e. y3 t) I# p) U8 m% V
Examples of volunteer activities include: help with Reuse Fairs & the
5 f5 L9 x8 x5 w; ]Reuse Centre; helping friends/neighbours with composting problems;7 a `' Z+ J/ [/ J6 D) P& T
public education display booths; assisting with programs and" A- \+ }8 V8 }1 J1 X' J, N
maintenance at the City Compost Education Centres; assisting at
) p) M0 R6 ?( A9 w0 d1 j& Ovarious demonstration gardens and general public and school
! f: P' r# E6 zpresentations.% F5 i$ F3 i; K6 a- Y6 m% N- g7 p& B
: V9 Q9 A: ?* l) N m& v6 FThere are many other opportunities for volunteers to contribute and/ g& L9 s" {& E D% w$ [, M# j0 t4 |, k
volunteers are able to choose the opportunities that interest them the
W' m; n$ X; X( t0 J( Tmost. Curious about recycling and composting and sharing your
% k4 B$ w; q) h6 L, }knowledge with others, then apply to become a Master. G) l' W+ U/ A" ?, @( K6 q) [

Course Dates: April 14 - May 2nd, 2009 -Tuesday and Thursday evenings
