Changes to health care premiums January 1, 2009

There are no changes in the way Albertans register for publicly-funded health care. However, as announced in the 2008 budget, health premiums have been eliminated as of January 1, 2009.

6 L; x2 D9 [* D0 uPayment and collection of health care premiums owed prior to January 1, 2009 will continue under these guidelines:

   1. All Albertans are responsible to pay premiums unless they qualify for premium assistance, government-sponsored income support programs, or are senior citizens.
5 t! L9 K/ u6 W& I6 ]   2. Employers and benefit administrators who register and pay premiums on behalf of their employees will continue to do so.
1 y* O9 {. ~4 {' l7 ^   3. Alberta Health and Wellness will continue to pursue collections from those who fail to pay premiums.
% G2 B6 C0 a4 w# |8 O6 N   4. Contributors to Alberta Blue Cross or other supplementary insurance plans that provide prescription drug, dental, and other extended coverage, will still pay those premiums, as they have not been eliminated.
