The Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers requires a fulltime Settlement Practitioner to deliver settlement services for Temporary Foreign Workers in the Edmonton region. This is a term position to March 31, 2010.

The project will focus on the following aspects of newcomers settlement services:5 w# e- }" c* f, k

• Outreach delivery of “orientation, information and referral services”

Workers, including matters of employment, housing, language, immigration and
( ?% I% V( G) [5 hsupportive counselling by telephone, emails and in-person.

The Settlement Practitioner will also be required to deliver information and; P& F! V6 [6 U$ {( O2 I
orientation workshops related to settlement needs of Temporary Foreign workers.

Responsibilities
: ~4 o/ J, e. S1 t• Provide a detailed needs assessment of TFW’s referred from EMCN staff,other service providers, industry employers, as well as self-referrals0 B9 |, t7 a+ }6 x! I
• Establish and maintain relationships between EMCN, other service providers and industries employing temporary foreign workers and promote settlement services at EMCN
: V, A$ t- _' M; m M1 M& v• Maintain close relationships with the Temporary Foreign Worker Advisory Office% `! Y( I2 ]+ Q( h/ P" B" R& @
• Provide counselling to help temporary foreign workers adjust to Canadian life,make referrals when appropriate, develop needs assessment and action plans if required- D" k4 D1 Y( L9 G) S t
• Assist people to fill in application forms, prepare for meetings or appointments relating to settlement or employment* ]& \4 S ^4 ]- C% b/ w
• Take clients to view apartments, open bank accounts, register for healthcare and become familiar with community services
% N/ X9 U# G2 ~! _4 O7 n, _• Assess and refer individuals experiencing critical or complex immigration and employment difficulties to appropriate service provider or government agency
* {# v' d' F3 H$ x+ Q6 t* }• Facilitate and coordinate delivery of workshops related to settlement of TFW
+ B- D( c9 ? [3 ^% M! ]- b: v& \- Z• Promote English language services for TFW and employers
- H" ? w! \+ M• Arrange interpretation and translation services as required# h0 Q! v. L, h9 _2 X
• Strengthen and build supports with community groups and volunteers, x0 U' o2 }$ L# ?
• Provide service delivery duties as required Desired skills, education and experience:
, R9 A" U/ e+ g; s5 Y$ |& Q! [• Minimum of 2 years of previous experience as a Settlement Practitioner in an intercultural/multicultural/cross-cultural context- u* n5 A4 a; W; b5 a9 C, x# x; J# m
• Relevant post-secondary education in social science or human service area
" X, R/ w9 F# T• Excellent written and oral communication skills
- l; j( o/ p! _( B. W/ w• Strong commitment to providing quality services to newcomers and to working in an intercultural environment with cultural competence/ T& u, x& m( `% v7 F
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team-based workplace, demonstrating flexibility in organizing work, showing initiative,judgment, resourcefulness, good decision-making

• Spanish language proficiency is an asset
