The Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers requires a fulltime Settlement Practitioner to deliver settlement services for Temporary Foreign Workers in the Edmonton region. This is a term position to March 31, 2010.3 L/ \/ \ p1 I2 z$ R q( M) b

• Centre-based delivery of “orientation, information and referral services”

Position Description:
! a I/ o& n6 u1 q' `, lThe Settlement Practitioner will be a front line practitioner, providing settlement/ F+ l# I4 W. k0 y# r0 x
guidance, information, orientation and referral services for Temporary Foreign; {; f% [. x$ H* M5 P) O7 K
Workers, including matters of employment, housing, language, immigration and
3 e2 f& g' u- x& H0 W& f; q* jsupportive counselling by telephone, emails and in-person.( P( X) w6 o! _# c% t6 n

The Settlement Practitioner will also be required to deliver information and9 c% w9 s' R5 u2 z& s" h2 P
orientation workshops related to settlement needs of Temporary Foreign workers.
& M' ~# _1 d# \, |+ F6 PWorkshops and group sessions will be centre-based, employer/industry based and& z; d& E- W" o1 r0 a F, s# Z/ T
community based. Some internal and outreach weekend workshop facilitation is

This position involves working as part of a team to provide services, create an

maintaining all information and records required by the program guidelines.

Responsibilities' \# ]2 W, i3 G& R' }4 O
• Provide a detailed needs assessment of TFW’s referred from EMCN staff,other service providers, industry employers, as well as self-referrals/ n9 a3 z W1 z" f/ p0 w& k
• Establish and maintain relationships between EMCN, other service providers and industries employing temporary foreign workers and promote settlement services at EMCN- v) ]& V; q& O+ o1 v
• Maintain close relationships with the Temporary Foreign Worker Advisory Office( R5 \$ s! y% {4 v
• Provide counselling to help temporary foreign workers adjust to Canadian life,make referrals when appropriate, develop needs assessment and action plans if required; j8 a- o, q ~' n% m) V
• Assist people to fill in application forms, prepare for meetings or appointments relating to settlement or employment
7 m" w% v, n; \8 a3 g• Take clients to view apartments, open bank accounts, register for healthcare and become familiar with community services
( a2 `" y( o! K9 H3 K• Assess and refer individuals experiencing critical or complex immigration and employment difficulties to appropriate service provider or government agency. z* V3 L9 W2 q( h# w" ]
• Facilitate and coordinate delivery of workshops related to settlement of TFW : Z3 Q! [! Q0 P1 @, ^7 }
• Promote English language services for TFW and employers0 h4 y& p% |) g T
• Arrange interpretation and translation services as required3 N% e8 {, r% O* O/ l
• Strengthen and build supports with community groups and volunteers
" u" b# N& s& _2 S e• Provide service delivery duties as required Desired skills, education and experience:! p& v4 I; h3 w' O0 ]3 v
• Minimum of 2 years of previous experience as a Settlement Practitioner in an intercultural/multicultural/cross-cultural context
: N+ W2 M+ L3 R$ k b• Relevant post-secondary education in social science or human service area# m" y r1 d, R( h/ X- `: R: ?, B- p
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
+ r) o, V4 `4 c7 w9 I; p9 W8 |• Strong commitment to providing quality services to newcomers and to working in an intercultural environment with cultural competence- [' X8 l/ N, W) o/ r5 K) c D% k8 m" z5 J; Z
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team-based workplace, demonstrating flexibility in organizing work, showing initiative,judgment, resourcefulness, good decision-making
