The Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers requires a fulltime Settlement Practitioner to deliver settlement services for Temporary Foreign Workers in the Edmonton region. This is a term position to March 31, 2010.% s' U" I' e9 g/ v

The project will focus on the following aspects of newcomers settlement services:

• Outreach delivery of “orientation, information and referral services”

The Settlement Practitioner will be a front line practitioner, providing settlement0 o- b0 }2 R% d9 ~, h
guidance, information, orientation and referral services for Temporary Foreign
/ \/ R0 T! h" X, l0 vWorkers, including matters of employment, housing, language, immigration and
4 h& O& P; s# g' a S" `$ M& ]1 |supportive counselling by telephone, emails and in-person.1 H/ H9 K. n. @
7 p( ^5 Q6 f2 }9 D' UThe Settlement Practitioner will also be required to deliver information and
/ S. Y$ t, s7 x0 D) }orientation workshops related to settlement needs of Temporary Foreign workers.7 A5 [) s$ l( Q& M/ N' r/ M
Workshops and group sessions will be centre-based, employer/industry based and u: U0 f4 C+ A+ l' t) @, y
community based. Some internal and outreach weekend workshop facilitation is7 `9 N% A! d2 E1 h
required. The ability to work flexible hours is essential.

Responsibilities
& g0 ]! n" m) O1 \- I7 M9 M1 o& T• Provide a detailed needs assessment of TFW’s referred from EMCN staff,other service providers, industry employers, as well as self-referrals
& c6 U) @( P- R& V8 d! X• Establish and maintain relationships between EMCN, other service providers and industries employing temporary foreign workers and promote settlement services at EMCN4 K( F" j% \4 A2 u/ U
• Maintain close relationships with the Temporary Foreign Worker Advisory Office/ f* V: U& a; S& T7 o' J7 w5 o
• Provide counselling to help temporary foreign workers adjust to Canadian life,make referrals when appropriate, develop needs assessment and action plans if required
# a( t3 d7 c+ x @% t1 Q" x• Assist people to fill in application forms, prepare for meetings or appointments relating to settlement or employment9 D! d# ]+ m" i! L; Q2 p
• Take clients to view apartments, open bank accounts, register for healthcare and become familiar with community services* [- H1 ^/ T% R
• Assess and refer individuals experiencing critical or complex immigration and employment difficulties to appropriate service provider or government agency1 K) B5 ]7 z& O9 ?
• Facilitate and coordinate delivery of workshops related to settlement of TFW 3 q; O6 c1 H. K- y' k
• Promote English language services for TFW and employers6 E2 D9 G! c% h; c
• Arrange interpretation and translation services as required3 o- Z2 v% v) O) S% g6 [
• Strengthen and build supports with community groups and volunteers! R0 C; P% l: q! w4 o
• Provide service delivery duties as required Desired skills, education and experience:
; F* u, L$ m. A• Minimum of 2 years of previous experience as a Settlement Practitioner in an intercultural/multicultural/cross-cultural context6 Y( T2 R8 \1 P3 X e! N7 }
• Relevant post-secondary education in social science or human service area
) b& Y9 J6 h, @1 S* Q* J: \• Excellent written and oral communication skills+ d) n( O! g. m' d
• Strong commitment to providing quality services to newcomers and to working in an intercultural environment with cultural competence
5 w4 ]! s* V, A' ~• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team-based workplace, demonstrating flexibility in organizing work, showing initiative,judgment, resourcefulness, good decision-making
* s- L* D9 e7 a• Proficiency in English is essential, as is fluency in other languages
