May 9 2008 - Statistics Canada reports that the unemployment rate rose to 6.1% in April even though employment increased by an estimated 19,000 over the month as more people entered the job market. Calculated in the U.S. manner, the participation rate reached 64.5% in April. . c! Y+ z/ e* b& P% F0 [* W
- T# k) R$ i6 c3 B/ s0 cOnly Manitoba registered significant jobs growth during the month. Overall, the decline in manufacturing jobs continues as a major trend with 112,000 factory jobs lost since April 2007. % v! s2 \& @, s, ]! R$ f, N1 f# [
Seasonally adjusted, unemployment rates vary from 13.2% (Newfoundland and Labrador) to 3.3% (Alberta). ( P0 ]! J4 @, P0 j7 k' b8 i* h
