The YOUCAN VERTO Project is a Government of Canada funded project that will
1 V" K+ y9 n& ~. Ybring 12 (per intake) at-risk youth together into a unique 20 week group-based
( ^3 a" }" K; |employability skills program entitled “The VERTO Project”; 16 weeks of day
- G7 J" R0 Z+ s# }/ o' F! nprogram and 4 weeks of employment exposure. YOUCAN is an acronym that; a& f6 T. f1 Y8 @
stands for Youth Organizing to Understand Conflict and Advocate Non-Violence.- q; x: ?9 ]' I% d, w/ \7 I' w4 d1 [
YOUCAN has served youth in the Edmonton area for almost six years and our% d" R7 j5 A1 a K: ~, e* H) Y: w
mission is to equip youth to engage and inspire others to peacefully resolve
& S5 b4 j5 }3 V$ b6 M* \% F0 `conflicts and develop healthy relationships in their communities. The goal of the1 {1 k2 Q" l9 ?3 e5 e
VERTO Program is to assist participants in obtaining and maintaining the skills
6 Q: W( t; t/ Tnecessary to bring success into their lives. The program is designed to serve
; ~2 F8 v6 \* A+ q C. P: qyouth who have been involved in the justice system. The program will expose
; |4 u# k5 i0 wparticipants to a wide range of components focusing on: employment
( \9 t" |" Q i0 k Q. ?development, personal wellness, technology learning, conflict resolution and9 @- [* c* \0 E( T! l T
exposure courses. Additionally, we will incorporate topics around health and
- A$ N& t6 y* o4 J" r; P3 Mwellness, volunteerism and leadership courses. The youth will be provided with a
2 E2 S$ ^: [7 Y* G) w# t& V0 ~6-month employment follow-up once the program is completed.
6 g$ B" Q. L: O7 O* NThe project will run from 9:30-4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday at the Central/ B5 r- g$ s! t: J) a
YOUCAN office, located at 8718-112 Avenue in Edmonton, Alberta.5 a) ]' {/ ]9 N- }1 q& i; f
The following position is a one-year contract with the possibility of/ e+ q. H% w# N4 s; X0 a4 \

; B' ?+ R d3 N5 n: Y• Responsible for building relationships with employers within the
" W, m7 L6 { {# vcommunity to partner with YOUCAN to ensure there are employers that are
# ]( G E7 n0 e& v7 y& j: O1 Ewilling to expose youth to the current employment opportunities+ l- ?- p; ~# \7 o; Y. A2 l9 T7 Y
• Ensure the youth action plans are reflecting the employment goals as
& b6 j3 O$ n6 M" ubeing realistic to each youth participant9 j9 j+ Z* }( y! M0 D, Q6 _" E: q: e
• Work with the youth to find the appropriate training needed to equip the( i0 F/ w4 K! t1 v6 I1 @
youth with the necessary skills needed to find the employment suitable to
X( A! u8 r' g$ X* [, Ceach participant5 k7 M( q; x7 T, Z3 Y1 G
• Assist youth with employment development including the development of! D/ e6 b- f m6 k- j0 ?
cover letters and resumes etc.! ]/ k1 c! }, P4 G; ?) [
• Coordinate the employment exposure component and on site work
" G0 b, W" h R+ V* s8 r' u* bexperience of the project, and monitor the progress of each youth at the
$ y s0 t! ~) k7 W/ c B6 K: Tplacements
" `( b! D& E; g) z5 A• Conduct the 6 month follow up process for each of the youth, evaluating& {* m( e' |: t2 j0 _2 P3 ^
the process, and supporting the youth where needed8 m) V8 u& e+ Q
• Work closely with staff of the Verto Project to ensure the holistic approach
% ~& }( h) g( V; p6 j5 Y* Tis being fulfilled for each youth
6 D) n, D9 y+ b• Administrative tasks, such as phone, fax, filing, copying, etc. that are: T1 E, O2 D# N6 Z4 R" ?5 n
related to YOUCAN’s Verto Project

Experience Required: Employment Developer
1 K+ G% s2 f* T3 C Post-secondary education or 3 years related experience accepted
# S' t9 g% c3 ]0 D! D+ r+ B A minimum of three years relevant experience is required.
# O# \& ^! k* n9 \, Z z' R' p6 ]2 O Enthusiastic and energetic innovator who is process-oriented and committed

 Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.* N8 p5 U$ \0 s- q+ A: q
 Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, organizational and

# R6 x: m: R, @7 ~9 Q Strong connections with industry, or the ability to make those connections) w) l0 Y0 q M3 _4 g

 Strong skills in building relationships with industry and youth
( _2 q- P: w$ K8 P0 Q# ` Experience working with youth at risk, and able to assess the needs of youth
