CALGARY — Screams filled the air after a 17-year-old teen was killed after being struck in the head with a pickaxe at a house party. + q8 g; s9 s$ X$ W4 A
8 V3 W. s, A! \7 r& F- {Neighbours said about 100 teens were at a house in southeast Calgary when the attack happened in a detached garage about 11:50 p.m. Saturday.

Lisa Poole, who lives two doors down from where the teen died, rushed outside when she heard a lot of screaming. 4 e+ e1 R) V0 M# q- L- N% f

I saw one boy laying there with a pickaxe stuck through the front of his head and some blood on the ground ... I haven’t slept at all and I can’t get that picture out of my head.” + i* G4 B/ d# s: `

) y% L, W8 |+ p7 v; o“I was standing out back having a cigarette then I heard a kid screaming, ‘They killed him,’ then they all scattered,” said Jeff, who didn’t want to give his last name.

Friends identified the dead teen as Matt McKay, 17. 5 x1 `& s) q6 H0 N( h

Chris Briggs, who grew up in the same neighbourhood and was friends with McKay, described him as nice guy and avid athlete. / V7 B, B: F0 |3 m- ~4 |* d9 _
7 e# @0 M5 Y5 q! i6 s“He was a pretty good guy,” he said. “He played hockey with my friends, he was huge into hockey.”

“We’re talking to a bunch of people who were there to find out what happened,” he said.
