CALGARY — Screams filled the air after a 17-year-old teen was killed after being struck in the head with a pickaxe at a house party.

: P+ _, }+ l+ b9 M& A( u+ ANeighbours said about 100 teens were at a house in southeast Calgary when the attack happened in a detached garage about 11:50 p.m. Saturday.

Lisa Poole, who lives two doors down from where the teen died, rushed outside when she heard a lot of screaming.
“
+ y3 M4 n" G$ l$ ^+ aI saw one boy laying there with a pickaxe stuck through the front of his head and some blood on the ground ... I haven’t slept at all and I can’t get that picture out of my head.”

* M4 _  Y5 ^# h“I was standing out back having a cigarette then I heard a kid screaming, ‘They killed him,’ then they all scattered,” said Jeff, who didn’t want to give his last name.

" h# t( U7 k5 b) x. f% LJeff said two high school-aged girls live at the house with their mother. He said large parties are common at the residence.

& @8 ^! ?% V) cFriends identified the dead teen as Matt McKay, 17.

Chris Briggs, who grew up in the same neighbourhood and was friends with McKay, described him as nice guy and avid athlete.

“He was a pretty good guy,” he said. “He played hockey with my friends, he was huge into hockey.”

3 f8 a( R" e# m7 bStaff Sgt. Kevin Forsen said police are currently interviewing more than 40 witnesses to the attack.

“We’re talking to a bunch of people who were there to find out what happened,” he said.

“The kids have been fairly co-operative and forthright.”

$ S7 q' O! u! k0 V" `Forsen said an autopsy is scheduled for today.
