CALGARY — Screams filled the air after a 17-year-old teen was killed after being struck in the head with a pickaxe at a house party.

( ~# a/ J% e/ t, }: sNeighbours said about 100 teens were at a house in southeast Calgary when the attack happened in a detached garage about 11:50 p.m. Saturday.

Lisa Poole, who lives two doors down from where the teen died, rushed outside when she heard a lot of screaming. " A- O5 {3 v# B: h( z5 f

3 a# c& ? g3 r# p7 N, sI saw one boy laying there with a pickaxe stuck through the front of his head and some blood on the ground ... I haven’t slept at all and I can’t get that picture out of my head.”

! h" v* M4 f4 M) ?“I was standing out back having a cigarette then I heard a kid screaming, ‘They killed him,’ then they all scattered,” said Jeff, who didn’t want to give his last name.

Jeff said two high school-aged girls live at the house with their mother. He said large parties are common at the residence.

Friends identified the dead teen as Matt McKay, 17.

$ E3 H, P. u* I8 KChris Briggs, who grew up in the same neighbourhood and was friends with McKay, described him as nice guy and avid athlete.

O" G' y! j0 z: m& zStaff Sgt. Kevin Forsen said police are currently interviewing more than 40 witnesses to the attack.

“We’re talking to a bunch of people who were there to find out what happened,” he said. 1 B1 ^' p) p P
