4 X% o4 e+ R5 @* }Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties 3 b; x% d) J2 A1 ]; g- Z
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad ; S; C8 ]6 P! K2 B4 }# o& r1 U9 s
news to report from that meeting.' n7 P: q. F: U0 w% S
( K$ T( S7 h( K) B3 m& T$ `* Z) I
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
. E, Q5 j/ e% X3 Yundergraduate international students from the increase to the % j1 d! D3 H }5 S' }# S
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
6 P! B& o7 ?+ Q* I( ?" Kstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base . t8 l1 M6 z! F( g+ W, i
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). % x6 W- ]/ T' r2 E& b
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
3 X6 f3 ?! m- `4 ~) ]the differential for international graduate students.
8 }7 [! ~0 s$ o$ K8 w6 U$ _+ G, J9 c0 V& I5 \. S* [
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
' S6 M5 G- N m% D3 T4 ^) oincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to 6 V; h9 Q* x- G
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 8 ~' R) h! I' w% B' V/ O
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At $ \$ e: x! \- O. d1 N3 a6 B
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
2 Y' F, E* b9 Z8 Otuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected 2 t! g* j# C9 f# Z8 j/ [6 X6 E9 ?& g
increases once they are here.: U% T* l3 i2 [" K& k" Q

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the # l+ L* H$ y% t" A8 G4 Q3 |
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I

# ]" q! B/ {" x* l0 D* Ohave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
