Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Dear International Undergraduate Students,

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
& q& T7 m+ Q2 o4 t8 VCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
news to report from that meeting.

$ r/ a0 i" a# c0 xFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
( C7 c) v+ k; w* Dstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
; J8 D. Q& W3 r+ b/ N, ntuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
: _( Z& c5 w- H! U; q4 D+ @6 k; Uthe differential for international graduate students.

, p8 f3 c9 M3 m  P0 l0 rNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
; i/ x% F) ^# b" o; b  |least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
5 Q- y* A! b  _tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
. M5 P+ b, X1 {! k/ x; w0 `6 `increases once they are here.

+ h# O: f& q0 PThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
- H/ f2 n6 j# S/ W! khave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
4 ~  m8 B$ q  }- rincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
4 z' H) N3 _) y* k+ V% Jhelp. Thank you.
