Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. 3 |* ^" o4 K6 v/ c' |' h0 i, @* t% s

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties ( A% d5 n' F& ]' I
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad 1 b) f* `. z1 C6 B' y2 p I
news to report from that meeting.; j- n: P p6 R6 D: |, r& b' A
( Q, `! t Z0 q5 e! }" b/ B8 pFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current 1 e9 w7 U& ]# q2 W8 U$ O6 X& Z
undergraduate international students from the increase to the % C7 j" ^! l# t
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
9 ?2 B. w7 [* d7 I# U- Bstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base " J9 Y- l ^6 I, ]/ G- y
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). $ c' p4 R1 L+ e8 }8 Q/ T
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase ( G | o& y* {5 C. j
the differential for international graduate students.! ~& l6 S& B) j- O1 b% q, S4 a
9 k: F6 z& a- G' s& |0 wNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an : j) E, ]- I% a/ ]' J# x8 v
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to 2 s, W0 S7 D1 d0 P% p P3 S! N9 y
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 0 H0 P% I6 T2 T
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
2 l! d: z, d5 r! @$ m! ^least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
" N3 }% g5 P6 `( R6 S+ Z1 R% t. Stuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
5 [' Q, G- E5 r5 r+ g Aincreases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
/ Q* T" `5 H9 Ninternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
& y0 X8 j% a' @! }0 hwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that + N, a @# J7 K0 Q$ L0 ?
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
2 ]% u R+ Z. l! ]9 I" }increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your ( m! J; {8 y! K
