Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. ( P6 S0 v x6 o8 n5 h% l' z" P( Z

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties 7 Y/ T. l6 p0 p: U B
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad 5 ~8 j/ p1 X) [
news to report from that meeting.

* h, ]% i: V; k+ l3 l: F3 [, VFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current ! L- V1 E H+ z
undergraduate international students from the increase to the ' J1 ?, y$ b' c+ U) ~3 d. E/ N, n8 D6 W
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
- x3 Z. d2 F" I# x5 I/ h4 Xstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base 4 n' ~3 \ Z- s+ w
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
- t8 T4 N/ x$ w# pAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
+ ?3 S6 ?! g. Z% Nthe differential for international graduate students.8 A) @7 n) S# Z9 @
& W% P$ S9 X& H5 G& ENow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an ( I' j. P) _% D* B
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
* ^$ @7 a; L6 R3 ?220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 9 X0 `# f ~: _/ _! L) d$ i
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
9 ^2 t+ T4 }6 K7 M, p9 Rleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
% z Q) n0 U/ Z) z, H) f: `tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
0 G9 `0 i5 u G- oincreases once they are here.

, d7 ~! v" N( A6 N, a" n2 eThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
' z) b" V, T% _# P+ H- d/ Iinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I

have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
' e. n5 T f* z6 O. H- [4 O1 ?increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your L5 C+ K. g4 v) Z3 ^
help. Thank you.
