International tuition. Let's get it on.

1 ~. o/ h- b: Q* m  \Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

1 k; p" _- s% [4 v+ s' dYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
2 q* T" C& H6 o* _4 U* u8 P7 e  }. iCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
* }0 d+ h' a2 h+ Vnews to report from that meeting.

/ q$ ]! c8 t1 }0 J' PFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
" N* O  X+ _! w8 Lstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
) J" l- i' F+ X2 h# Otuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
/ E7 p: \, g2 M/ U' Y& z) Wthe differential for international graduate students.

Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
+ @- p5 I3 @" f! B  z: ~/ yincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
increases once they are here.

. r& O  I: T& ~2 cThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
; L3 U' s( {9 H/ y) g9 Dinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
$ \1 m" x: ?. d# x4 H" s8 Y, Zwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
help. Thank you.
