Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
) @) |8 Y; w% z( G3 M6 YCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
0 K6 c8 B0 e& Onews to report from that meeting.
E% ~; T& O, e0 p( w! x9 K9 ?$ p. ~: U6 H5 x7 R' O
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
1 w% M2 X0 J$ q0 h0 Hundergraduate international students from the increase to the , V. I6 I0 v5 Y1 M$ v
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
1 J) Z0 q- M- y9 xstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
5 i8 _. U2 s+ h% j) vtuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
* R2 v$ k9 ?( L8 K" IAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase 5 x. b# M7 F% X5 o
the differential for international graduate students.
! ^( G: w4 P! D4 t4 Q8 m7 O8 C: u7 N7 q% J3 e
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
# Q% _8 t& G4 Z: U; ]1 ~increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to ; D0 D6 X0 z: E8 o9 {" T) H
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students , l1 G# t3 O u1 N; G' M
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
! E1 o8 Q2 e# {# \' A9 qleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in ]& F# X7 N0 Y7 h! r
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
$ t5 W6 Q ~: H6 }2 m4 Z/ Eincreases once they are here.1 f% W$ z: Q& Q% I) \7 h
) L5 ^5 j2 X- a7 R$ [( v6 c
The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the 7 c4 R+ |; j: G0 Z! v
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I

8 ~( G& J# o. Khave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
