Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Dear International Undergraduate Students,

' P( a* d0 T9 `1 vYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
9 w/ m v: x9 B9 L" k- c8 ~& g$ ~Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
5 k' R2 v/ x$ f: `' qnews to report from that meeting.
: `" X4 E+ r$ T: b) d3 Q8 _9 ]3 P! }$ m, g
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
) X; Q! a( E) V7 Y( ^2 g. Q) ?undergraduate international students from the increase to the
5 o7 S# p% N" x; A) W" Rdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
3 Z" O2 _5 I, W( H- cstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
: k. }' G! v( F2 c2 }/ E Q* G' m( ^6 P( rtuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
6 o4 J0 m3 A, YAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase 5 B" X% |8 n. Q' h. s3 q
the differential for international graduate students.+ A( ^! ~* _. E9 C
! V; V: }6 _- P; d
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an 4 f8 @: n* l4 Y3 b9 K( ^
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
6 g) k( W. Y% c! `/ N' G1 K8 ~4 P220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 4 O/ f- u; t' v# q! O, N7 U
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
5 n5 R, f; F$ `1 c7 b; ^least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in & _7 P5 I Z* c$ l- c* f7 ~5 Q0 [
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
9 J$ d$ D" [ u7 ?( I) A# u+ zincreases once they are here.8 y/ S- P' H7 i% E" M. f. ~
( S5 O& I$ j# `- _( {The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the 1 J2 \6 y2 L: m& S' q6 f
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
- z. V4 l3 k! h8 r+ swould like to say thank you to all of the international students that $ F4 \/ V r2 p/ w" _7 K! }" T5 K
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 4 N [8 _# Y( r; X# ~5 n% n% O9 ~ Z
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your & X" z; a6 Y% |- u9 ~6 x
