When arrived to Edmonton to start my graduate studies on 2004, me and

in one of the Boardwalk's high rise buildings (Galbraith House) for
3 z# R1 f' x( }5 J- ]. Y680 CAD(everything was included), believe it or not the same apartment

is more than 1300 CAD now.(I still have a copy of the contract and for" e" p1 {% n O# w

Other costs of leaving have also increased and the university & _# J) ^; o" t {
increases the tuition fee by few percent every year and international
, o9 v) y, Q$ b* i: D# wdifferential fee was increased by almost 20% last year. Add to this,
" b* D; D! |4 D$ `% y. I/ C5 Q! x. j. Dthe fact that the university housing has no more space for newcomers & j4 C& w) R. l
and most of the newly admitted students who applied for housing were
& K& y3 ?1 l! l! t* X' Y: F. A% Uasked to look for a residence on open market.

/ e1 K0 k/ t5 ?6 |While the average cost of living for a typical graduate student has 3 X7 z! j8 Z( b8 t
increased by something more than 70% percent we are getting paid 7 ^, u) J1 g- n# N" f1 h
exactly for the same amount of money that we were offered in our
4 J5 ?0 Q/ [( w3 {/ {admission letter (18000 CAD + 1500 CAD for international students
; N2 d2 z" n& Y# d3 Q+ F5 U- P5 |+ t4 _=19500CAD. What I get is something around 1000CAD/month!!! after
% J/ V& Y( }: f L1 _tuition fee and taxes). To make the argument easy to understand just
/ \8 A! B/ k5 S W. z, v9 J6 @imagine that a new student gets the same amount of money that I am , Z8 Z. X, g; Y3 o5 v; J3 N9 z2 U
getting now and I was getting 3 years ago but he or she (like all of 0 Z+ V2 A) M& B2 V: o
us) has to pay twice as much as I was paying for housing when I was

from different governmental and non governmental sources and graduate
7 b3 t4 r4 V6 J2 `! O1 v5 ostudents are the main pillars of research work at the university.

My objective in bringing all abovementioned points in your attention
9 k" H0 X7 p7 Y, w, gis to question the adequacy of financial aid for graduate and
5 ^1 d, M8 t) x5 @! Wespecially international students. Isn抰 it time for the GSA to take' U" @" j7 s, [/ Q2 P; N+ O
0 R# H: x3 l( u& T2 v# Ginitiative in raising the issue of increasing financial aid for & n+ V! W z% v5 p# A
graduate students so that the can afford this increase in costs?
