my friend rented a very nice, spacious and shiny 2-bedroom apartment

While I was paying 340CAD/month for more than a year, I抦 paying / T& P: }% Z! M6 ?' o- Y7 k
600CAD/month plus utilities right now, some thing around 700CAD/month.

& V* x9 M3 [+ W1 L% zOther costs of leaving have also increased and the university
2 B7 y' E* A. p% R& q6 Aincreases the tuition fee by few percent every year and international
3 x1 ~& B1 V9 m4 u T5 adifferential fee was increased by almost 20% last year. Add to this, 5 \6 f4 o$ t% |9 q, v
the fact that the university housing has no more space for newcomers
& Q* j- j) p5 Wand most of the newly admitted students who applied for housing were
! o; n" i( G1 oasked to look for a residence on open market.
% w2 J3 I# T* ?8 v2 e% ?3 K' @# g3 V5 i _+ G r1 h# Z u: U
While the average cost of living for a typical graduate student has - X5 t& E$ K+ S' s0 J
increased by something more than 70% percent we are getting paid ( L3 Q. E0 f4 {! u
exactly for the same amount of money that we were offered in our
8 l' L' o8 R% M* T, P2 e# ladmission letter (18000 CAD + 1500 CAD for international students 3 K4 x" }) B% _. `( X4 k
=19500CAD. What I get is something around 1000CAD/month!!! after
5 H! C# Y' i3 i( E1 etuition fee and taxes). To make the argument easy to understand just
1 ` N6 [! S9 c" ~9 Pimagine that a new student gets the same amount of money that I am
/ P# o* @4 I3 hgetting now and I was getting 3 years ago but he or she (like all of ; A0 i& q* s T2 @: {
us) has to pay twice as much as I was paying for housing when I was
) [. E$ V+ f+ h% N0 ^' wadmitted and has to incur at least 70% more in average living costs.: J, N9 w4 o! w2 U

Also have in mind that Alberta is a rich province and University of ; [0 D7 F4 G! N( H; F& _
Alberta has a remarkable record in absorbing various money and grants
: P6 B2 I8 B4 T0 T+ @# x' jfrom different governmental and non governmental sources and graduate
/ o2 z9 {$ t# d1 O! h8 L5 fstudents are the main pillars of research work at the university.
, h! W# E/ I- P5 m# Y/ E7 W6 O/ b
My objective in bringing all abovementioned points in your attention ; c4 f7 r1 P3 Q2 E4 L Z
is to question the adequacy of financial aid for graduate and 6 |1 v3 R) M; N l* c
especially international students. Isn抰 it time for the GSA to take
G4 ~9 m0 t8 y" B4 y; @ " X! H3 F. u4 f, |* u" P
initiative in raising the issue of increasing financial aid for
/ J% Q3 y" I+ M! d+ xgraduate students so that the can afford this increase in costs?
