Today I was volunteering at a post office. A man in an old jacket with uncombed hair came to the counter. He had a wallet in his hand, and put it on the counter. He told me:
3 o) e1 C" ]* J- E: I"I am going to send it back". 2 B; K& ^6 o# }6 H: i/ V7 h" A
I did not understand what he meant by "it", because usually people would send a letter or a parcel back to the sender, and I did not see he had any of those. So I asked him:
, m: `( K* D, J' S6 P "I am sorry, what are you sending back?"
* L/ \: U7 w- U; X y! g0 THe said, "the Wallet, I am sending back the wallet." Then he added: "I am going to pay the postage." ) |: K8 ?1 ~' n" e
"Oh, you found a wallet, and you are going to send it back to the person who lost it?" " e& \9 _" [1 ~. h, F
"Yes, I did."2 m3 F2 u: o! u# Z0 ]# e
Finally I understood: this dishevelled man found a wallet, and he was going to return it to the owner by post.
- a" q, r4 S7 g# M1 }5 tHe took the ID card from the wallet, and showed me the address of the loser of the wallet. I saw there were several one-hundred bills in the wallet. & D ?; d& F. ?( A4 T) r
"Are you going to take some money from the wallet to pay the postage?"3 f8 u8 f% z5 O* F4 G4 P5 X
"No, I am not. I do not do those things."
( ]; W# [" J4 u# f& t; S4 pHe took out his wallet, which was nearly worn-out, small, and almost empty. There were some coins inside. ! [3 \* m* L9 G+ R8 V
I gave him a bubbled envelope, and instructed him where to write the addresses. He wrote the owner's address, but stopped at writing a return address. He asked:
! ], m2 S9 J- c8 C"Is it okay that I do not write this part?"
' G) v. v2 W2 b0 q8 _9 b: K"Yes, you may." I thought he must want to be a nameless hero. But he said:8 t) h, {6 \2 H3 [/ f$ `
"I do not have an address."
7 u8 h1 M# r \; V2 II was surprised: "oh, where do you live?"+ T( Q, D1 t7 t6 n* y. @
He did not look up, and said: "I do not have a home."' x; G: L4 f7 S, ~
My heart had a sudden jump. I realized that this is a homeless man who found money but was sending it back to the person who lost it. 1 {" z9 j8 n, p3 O8 G( J" Y
He did not a posses a home, but he had a big heart. He had the precious fortune of being a man of integrity.
