Today I was volunteering at a post office. A man in an old jacket with uncombed hair came to the counter. He had a wallet in his hand, and put it on the counter. He told me:
' X& |! X& r- y7 E"I am going to send it back". 1 U7 I5 }. |& s% }8 e* o8 N8 ~8 v
I did not understand what he meant by "it", because usually people would send a letter or a parcel back to the sender, and I did not see he had any of those. So I asked him:9 g2 h R& i; W! o
"I am sorry, what are you sending back?"
+ t4 e$ T p D! X5 ^( tHe said, "the Wallet, I am sending back the wallet." Then he added: "I am going to pay the postage."
+ F2 \, E- L( h. U"Oh, you found a wallet, and you are going to send it back to the person who lost it?"
( o' X! p: K! S& {6 Z8 q6 R* B"Yes, I did."
5 V1 W9 e C. B' l4 PFinally I understood: this dishevelled man found a wallet, and he was going to return it to the owner by post. 7 \: R i& }, s4 t$ ~
He took the ID card from the wallet, and showed me the address of the loser of the wallet. I saw there were several one-hundred bills in the wallet. & x3 ^) X$ p1 B
"Are you going to take some money from the wallet to pay the postage?": y( w% i/ P' b" Z0 X
"No, I am not. I do not do those things."
, M6 h$ T- ~- \* bHe took out his wallet, which was nearly worn-out, small, and almost empty. There were some coins inside. " d. B9 D' e3 S' j" e7 T* m5 |
I gave him a bubbled envelope, and instructed him where to write the addresses. He wrote the owner's address, but stopped at writing a return address. He asked:2 Y- s5 ^! A5 {' c8 C
"Is it okay that I do not write this part?"8 a3 S: c8 y' ?% Z
"Yes, you may." I thought he must want to be a nameless hero. But he said:

I was surprised: "oh, where do you live?"

0 ^' T+ }) c& U% Z& ^% f/ nMy heart had a sudden jump. I realized that this is a homeless man who found money but was sending it back to the person who lost it.
