In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community
" r% _/ q/ {/ }' pEngagement Training.6 }2 f% P6 n: I9 `" t) I$ b

We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,! N' f' U! e+ }" A
(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood
- a \& |. Z F& F. E3 j( V( qgroups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work5 j6 \0 E% L# O& d% D' y+ a+ E" Y
together across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy
9 @6 r1 c! W* c0 TCommunities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.

' A& m+ V6 y* r" {" F6 SPacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years
* }# s2 ~7 x; Sof fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter; |# f$ q- f9 L B# G
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the6 l' `; h$ A3 R' [" |8 r' q
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:9 X6 \, b- V* |1 D- t# Y' F
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
3 T1 Z X& y+ Y( m; Q: mIain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the
9 V- s- Z. c- _9 _island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed

This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their, X: e/ ]) n" i! J2 k! m* E
own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people* K+ I x$ a! D z5 q
who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV

Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems

$ N) X4 H0 Y( E$ ?: Y- p! dand music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!* Q, T( z2 z% H. p0 k0 H7 P- ]3 }

According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the; X4 w2 G5 \7 D" q
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole
8 U) K6 z/ p" P$ K, g! Zprocess, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the
1 n; f7 a2 F; ]# l) W: F, ^2 A phands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.

so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
