& L! q* V) w- xIn phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community
3 P- _0 }# K+ iEngagement Training.8 f: r0 o3 Y" d( P# L$ ^& R4 G. D
# r: v$ [0 v5 _( p. R& G: y+ IWe can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,6 R( p) u0 ?8 |5 ^$ ~8 I
(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood
5 j7 i; ^7 S+ m# j7 q) `4 zgroups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
6 ~0 r% p9 [/ A$ Q' V/ b1 }, Ytogether across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy7 N6 ~3 M! L9 }) [5 E0 c2 f
Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.! L1 I/ l9 |9 s. p

Set on the remote Papua New Guinea Island of Bougainville in the South
- U) a- @, P3 c$ r$ w) OPacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years$ n- X# S+ L/ n9 B- w9 \
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter- w6 K* T9 n3 |
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the
- U9 l# @+ L3 J+ K1 Tinternational community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:1 C3 t& g% r$ O' r3 F _6 k
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
: g* j7 C% w, [2 ~9 _% l) hIain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the6 a, z! d# E8 t5 R* i
island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
; C0 w- p! [, T9 [! V+ binternational peacekeeping operation.( p4 F. n- p) Y$ u ]9 `
. x3 l; i9 F4 g% B% FThis beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their2 |+ }8 }# F3 e) G$ w
own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people1 M( Y3 g l* r: l/ j
who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV! J! g3 ?6 @; k6 d: s" w3 y& {
screens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and
2 N3 H. n) d4 A- @( kAfghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
Q+ I5 U. F, e0 ^0 @improbable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs5 |+ @, ?$ f) b' Z% Z; f
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!9 A( W: z, _: _1 F$ F2 p
- K, z5 i: \) U NAccording to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the7 t' {! q1 s3 M3 Z& c1 q/ `9 e
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole
8 T; y: h& d$ z* u. O$ Fprocess, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the
0 q% ?2 f0 P/ w( k0 \7 m; K: Xhands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
* ]7 c D* G: y/ f3 OAlso, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,
; }; k, A! b" k" j) D$ O! w1 hso we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
