1 h: v8 e# e, XWe can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,1 p1 |& |' C0 C: Y1 X8 T/ Q; S
(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood
. @2 B! {8 C: R. |1 w6 G. p5 cgroups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work& t. l4 f0 y% }: D
together across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy

Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years3 t4 M9 Q$ u* }8 R4 H% [$ k, s, Q
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter- V# ^# |( p5 q9 C* l
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the' m% w# _! f9 X0 k: j. i
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:( H2 R! i" J2 A
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter# a0 R! y0 N7 g0 Y
Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the
3 J- X' o3 a& ?" Sisland and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
$ ?$ l( `' ~" h! L& r5 g( Finternational peacekeeping operation.
% P g' L- t. M! g$ s
1 _9 |4 p; D' d1 VThis beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their
/ u" k* X+ A! _' R C, Nown story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people
3 A y, h! M# W0 A, ^! v9 awho brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV
J. n( h; [) @% V, |* xscreens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and
! C. K+ I# C+ ~& FAfghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
/ p0 A0 |( O- J l# v0 A5 K/ timprobable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs
9 I" `5 X" R `and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!8 a9 v, U8 s2 o$ K6 G4 a

According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the
& ?5 K* h/ s# Ssuccess of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole( E( m9 y% H; M& U' z
process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the3 W4 `% \: V- P* {& P
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.) P! {5 I+ p) t6 R& ^6 `3 C( T/ B- o
Also, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,/ ^- m) L" R& b, Y. F8 c9 m
