谈英语俚语

谈英语俚语
5 p) a- m# f6 A; C* S/ K* _; c' R5 u2 }

( b  V$ e! B# e) Q* \在中文报章杂志上,常看到一些英语俚语(口语)的中文翻译。诸如「黑羊」、「踢水桶」、「阿奇里斯% N" g0 W2 M8 P
之踝」等等。其实这些译文都是来自英语「black sheep」、「kick the bucket」和「Achille's heel」。* M( [0 ?* X0 }: n6 [
若是这些译文不附加原文予以解释,恐怕「迷惑」的读者,不在少数。这不是影响了语文的沟通目的吗?为此,介绍一些这类的英语俚语(在此称之为「特别字眼」),也许对某些读者会有点助益!+ \% A' Q$ A- H& ^

; ~, ~, F0 \) J4 C  y1 A% V(1) empty suit:% ]. h3 J' K4 f" C$ ^. W& {7 M. E' B" g/ d
指不重要的人或假冒者 ( an unimportant person or a phony) 多半用在商业上,当名词用。
- [7 {9 `# O5 m1 x(这本是business term,指虽然穿著整齐全套的 business suit,却不能干、没有能力,不受尊敬的人。)
" X6 I% l- F% S4 Z- [3 z! c例如:# T0 H9 z3 j0 \
An empty suit generally gets no attention from the public.7 ?# ~& ?$ m* A( s
(一位虚伪不实的人,通常不会受到大众的注意。)
9 ~& ?, Y  i. t" L& NMr. Lee acts like a big shot, but he is just an empty suit.
% [& B* G0 p3 _$ l  f; K; ~7 e$ s(李先生装著像位大人物,但他只是不重要的人。)
; q* g3 k) ~# j2 G1 w; s& h虽然这句话,多半只用单数,但有时也用复数:
6 p: i) I: f' k+ q/ mThe company is filled with a lot of empty suits.. ~! t3 z7 [- v9 V0 X6 G
(这公司有许多虚伪不重要的人)
( i3 h, U% h' W2 u5 b  w(2) fair-haired boy:0 Z/ C2 H5 F: X8 r
指得宠的人,也就是宠儿,多半指男人(a fa-vorite person usually referring to a man)1 s1 d2 n6 S5 D1 b! X
(通常用单数,当名词用)$ }; ~' ~: f% H4 b$ B0 D: h
例如:
9 M" ]6 W. {6 r' q5 CMr. Cheney has become a fair-haired boy to the presi-dent.  p& p0 @2 O% _% O& n, K
( Cheney 先生变成总统的宠儿。)
0 f' C% k3 A' ~; `Not being a fair-haired boy, Mr. Wong never gets pay-raises and promotions.0 o" |6 q) b' t: S2 t6 j. F- q
(王先生不得宠,从未得到加薪和升级。)+ K: p7 C4 F& a! C; _7 b' {7 t
有时也可用复数:
* j! ~# k0 ^) }$ HMr. Bush selected two former fair-haired boys for his cabinet.) r7 K+ |) v2 l9 P" T
(Bush 先生为他的内阁选用两位过去的宠儿。)
  E3 ^5 a. |/ G: Q! M' \Fair-haired boys tend to receive special treatment by their bosses.
1 n  O/ z5 T- M3 e( v(得宠的人,较会受到他们上司的特别待遇。)
5 o6 V- q* F! C(但没有 fair-haired girl 的说法)4 ?5 m* [5 e4 P9 Q' f( c/ M
(3) fishing expedition:
1 _$ ?! L. a  v, k8 `为了搜罗新闻材料而进行盘问或调查(Try to ask questions to get more useful information)
* f1 D. A7 M* X! u7 f(这句话本是 legal term,当名词用,多半用单数)
! T. U( q7 q; O! |& r6 {* t0 k: M例如:
+ t# c. Q! K* B# _: s9 F+ N7 UThe judge said the prosecutor was on a fishing expedi-tion and stopped him.6 `5 Z5 Q9 f: A2 e0 ?. Z
(法官说原告为搜罗罪证而进行调查,要他停止。)
% N5 }) _$ N1 C( |$ A1 D6 cThe police are on a fishing expedition in order to solve(或 resolve)the murder case.5 d/ @- u2 E: m  }: x! a: h5 L
(警察进行调查盘问,以便侦破谋杀案。)
" j/ ~# E2 f. }! S(注:solve 和 resolve 都有「解决」的意思,但通常solve用在「问题上」,resolve 用在「争执」上。solve the problem 而 resolve the conflict)
% h- P4 l! ], y( Z! XThe reporter went on a fishing expedition about the president's involvement in the Iraq War.% r1 q# g! e  q3 L
(记者搜罗有关总统卷入伊拉克战争的新闻资料。)7 b' p' A7 R6 h; B. L
偶尔也有人用复数:" U' U# z0 O- b* ^8 O/ I
Several fishing expeditions have been made before he decides to run for office.
4 Y" M( D, T  E( L5 B" p0 c(在他决定竞选之前,他做了数次的收集资料调查。)
6 N$ I' w5 h' s! U(4) filthy rich:8 h, {9 H8 p( k5 E1 H- A
意思是很富有,很有钱。(very wealthy)
; f7 D8 ]- L( ~" B# c6 A(未必是不义之财或肮脏钱)" u3 m+ [2 T% F: A+ u( W+ _
多半当形容词用。例如:
0 d9 G; V3 W6 P% s. h0 [7 tWith a beautiful mansion and an expensive car, Mr. B must be filthy rich.2 B% A% B+ O5 T9 N3 d5 `5 y) Z
( B先生住著富丽堂皇的大厦,开著昂贵的汽车,他一定很有钱。)
, d; k" w2 _7 A4 eDespite being filthy rich, Mr. C is still leading his life in a frugal way.
/ b5 h4 D8 F+ e(尽管 C 先生很富有,他仍然过著简朴的生活。)
. x1 W1 F# W+ RA filthy rich person tends to have a superiority complex toward others.) w% S- {" ]# L. v" N
(有钱者对他人有优越感的倾向。)  D' Q0 P4 ~! I- V/ j
Filthy rich people are not necessarily well-respected unless they possess noble characters.7 P  w- A5 m" O( {
(有钱人未必受人尊敬,除非有高尚的品格。)3 u$ @; C- g& I9 u' `* t
(注:但没有 cleanly rich 的说法), V) s4 n" A& Y9 j8 r4 n- w
(5) fairy godmother:; [  `" h3 j1 }6 C
指及时慷慨提供帮助的人(someone who unex-pectedly gives generous assistance)
$ b2 `: D0 r1 P1 B8 `(多半指有钱的女人)
" k5 d. w4 H" a# v(这是来自 fairy tale, 指女人有 magical power;因为童话故事里没有男人,故不说 fairy godfather。当名词用。例如:- z5 @2 p: f9 }" z2 E
Mr. A has a fairy godmother who gave him fifty thou-sand dollars.
+ I+ B- X- B) e: b- ?(一位有钱的女人,帮助A先生五万元。)
( {. M4 e( c0 R1 `3 XAfter lifelong savings, Mrs. B donated all her money to a charity organization like a fairy godmother.; C  G, r9 f1 k% E% ~  ~
(B 太太将一生的积蓄全部捐给慈善机构。). p% u$ ]  p: E4 a6 D& r- l
有时也用复数:$ c6 e3 E/ C5 F4 r* R
Only business women can act as fairy godmothers.% E( P3 t: d2 m0 z0 w: k
(只有商场上的女人才能提供金钱帮助他人。)
9 {9 u# y0 B  |+ g9 ~8 V& QIn Chinese society very few fairy godmothers can be discovered.
' t& m# l9 {6 P; ~7 c& B# R& S(在中国社会里,很少有钱的女人慷慨捐助。)/ @) z7 X1 C' E# [- u4 b8 T; c
+ l* d& O0 ^/ ]9 n+ U0 Z
# g1 Z) f2 |. T
6)eye opener:
  w; V3 P/ i; v指令人瞠目的事物或使人恍然大悟的发现。也就是惊人的新发现或启示(shocking news or revela-tion), Y# q3 n- G, q3 r
(当名词用;通常只用单数)# Y) f2 l1 s5 T& s" }# x+ n% U* H3 r
例如:
3 w% |, u1 D$ P8 x5 o5 tYour wonderful article on marriage was certainly an eye opener to many youngsters.
! ~4 ]+ M+ i  l* l( o# n2 {& r(你那篇有关婚姻的好文章,使许多年轻人获得启示。)" r* \1 R$ M/ b$ w3 ?9 ^9 ~
Mr. Wong's speech about U.S./ China policy seemed to be an eye opener.! J" @" y  h  o' m( @# p+ r+ o
(王先生的中美政策讲演使人恍然大悟。)
4 t" F+ J! t8 T3 A% Q2 Q; T" ]The popular World Journal in North America is an eye opener for many Chinese immigrants.
0 r) M3 N; Z/ u(大名鼎鼎的世界日报是北美许多中国移民惊喜的新发现。)3 F0 Z8 d+ C' v" ?/ G# ^- k' ~& |
Some American customs and ways of thinking can be an eye opener to many Chinese people.
% f) @3 V2 Q' ?9 C( O' J(美国一些的风俗习惯和想法,让许多老中感到惊奇。)3 y$ H& a8 m* J1 x4 f2 j2 y6 f
(7) hot dog:
# \  m8 T& i7 r, j2 ~& f' t指喜欢卖弄冒险的举动,或爱出锋头的惊险动作。(one who performs showy or dangerous stunts ; a show off) ( 可当名词或动词用)4 k% F. A" x3 m0 ?/ b& r
例如:
5 N& u; I2 G: c  |2 f/ K. ?. R1 ISome young people are hot dogs behind the wheel, speeding all the time.  C8 @" p8 |  B7 r
(一些年轻人开车时,常做些超速的惊险动作。)
( o8 ~0 e5 f/ A/ m(这里的 hot dogs = hot doggers)3 |1 I/ a2 g, ~  A
In front of his girlfriend, the teenager was trying to hot dog.
0 x( o8 S! F. J1 w* ?3 H(在女友面前,年轻人做出一些卖弄技巧的花招。)
, }$ G1 W, x. Y9 F( v(动词时态是:hot dogged, hot dogging)/ l. |7 ~0 `5 I
During the air force show, one of the pilots was a dan-gerous hot dogging flyer.
$ s8 u+ Q- v+ F1 |. K% V(在空军表演时,一位飞行员做惊险的飞行动作。)( _5 P( Z& G: {, H0 ]: ?
也指真正的热狗食物:
, x$ _8 B1 l5 X( h8 }1 K1 o+ V/ F4 LThe hot dog is one of the favorite fast food in the U.S.7 s( p* @5 B: H$ l8 p1 N: e6 d
(在美国热狗是一种受欢迎的快餐。)
% \2 b" r- d( e  N: f7 w1 E$ R- t: j也可表达欣赏的心情:$ t4 y5 N" W+ i1 `! y* o
Hot dog ! What great news for me.
- h! B2 Z9 k/ I3 b5 K- k# ~(真棒!对我来说是好消息。)
* c  ]8 I' V6 x+ ?" r  ^/ x(8)eager beaver:' q) d8 _/ \7 z. g; o/ w" f
指做事非常卖力的人,也许为了给人良好的印象。(one who likes to work harder in order to impress others)
! D- d% S7 G6 a0 G; E! c(这句话是来自二次世界大战,新兵为了讨好长官而卖力工作。)
. C5 ?( Z4 _# w(当名词用,可指男女)1 n: f& R$ h! Y: Y
例如:8 t( a' C9 |$ }
John seems an eager beaver because he always comes early and leaves late.
% m/ E* I- Y7 s" [(John 似乎是十分卖力的人,因为他总是来得早,走得晚。)
, v8 f/ k/ b- m3 F3 D5 o6 F0 sBeing an eager beaver, he sometimes is not well-liked by his colleagues.
* l9 S/ a0 T! t; _9 u0 K* S(他做事异常卖力,有时不受同事喜欢。)
: ^8 r6 v) t- o6 ~1 K; P- A! L. q$ DDoes Mr. B have a long-lasting attitude as an eager beaver?
' U5 ^. X5 R& ^- A. W: B' c(B 先生做事非常卖力,那是长久以来的态度吗?)
0 d% Z6 a# Q7 ]4 {You may find some eager beavers in any organizations.) b. c3 u3 K: t1 g' i& a' n
(在任何机关里,你总会发现一些对上司竭力讨好的人。). C7 @( p  ~0 s7 }3 F0 H8 }- g
(9)doubting Thomas:6 Z1 t4 v$ }3 j  Z; ?
这是指不信任所有的人,几乎是一种怀疑主义者。(one who is always doubtful toward others)
; L4 C  m: n$ i(这原出于圣经,因耶稣门徒 Thomas 不信基督的复活)6 o. b4 _/ m& Z6 T: Z; ?
(当名词用)+ e7 w# n+ y' M0 z( j' Q# O
例如:
# [9 X7 B; n# Z1 n. v) YI am not trying to be a doubting Thomas about Mr. Wong's keeping promise.
4 ^" O* {5 F$ L+ G  w- {6 C(我不怀疑王先生的承诺。)4 Y6 v* T  T% P  [3 T; `4 C0 x
There must have been some unpleasant experiences for Mr. B to become a doubting Thomas.1 \( T: t, C! X! K1 e
(B 先生不信任他人,也许因为有不愉快的经验所致。)* _; {3 \7 @' k1 t" O8 n+ G
也可用复数:
. g7 {9 J0 n& A0 d# ]- @) bMy friends are doubting Thomases toward many Chi-nese business people.: U' N4 U4 E5 l
(我朋友对许多中国商人不信任。)
8 v: s; y, O# s  MIf there are too many doubting Thomases in our society, people will lose confidence with one another.
3 X5 p3 N! W# K. G(假如社会上有太多的怀疑主义者,那么人与人之间的信心就会丧失。)/ l  X! Q" O9 Z( \
(10)dragon lady:* X1 f: }- L+ I- r( U: i8 r
指生气、不友善或凶险的女人。(angry, un-friendly or dangerous woman)(当名词用)( h* y  s8 |7 {& K2 ^" h& r, D  U
例如:
; Z) _  F9 E. j) oThe chairman's secretary is so snoffy and nasty that she is considered a dragon lady.1 X* y+ n5 b- k5 P+ V7 B
(主席的秘书,很自大,脾气差,她被视为凶恶的女人。)  L/ W: f2 v7 k2 v
I am sure no woman likes to be called a dragon lady.
) o/ a! M, v' s4 O(我相信没有女人喜欢被称为凶恶的女人。), w" c, A6 m" [# f! ?
Should your girlfriend happens to be a dragon lady, are you going to breakup with her?
! A! x( l# @# E9 [/ t(假如你的女友成了凶恶的女人,你要与她分手吗?)
. W) y4 F2 c. r0 @0 H0 G也可用复数:- o1 ]# q& R! U5 E/ t
There may be many dragon ladies in our community.6 u, J- E7 U1 g! d8 i/ |, t7 b5 D
(在我们社区里也许有不少凶女人。); Q3 L; z; u# U2 d0 [' A( `
注:老外指凶恶男人,不用 dragon gentleman,利用英国侦探小说里的中国恶棍傅满洲(Fu Manchu)为代表
