I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I# j8 `9 s B1 K
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
8 B/ i' A, L& p3 Y# nconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
/ e7 E/ q+ Z/ N) M% x, @8 u/ T. Battachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them# c4 T0 d9 {$ G) s" q2 u8 D& N) n
will acquire language earlier and faster.

: a* g' |' m! J* l# a! CIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately4 F- z* ]2 p6 @6 `: c
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
1 h5 h7 _, m* {videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or) u6 E" u( W7 t2 ^; g
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you/ h/ c' M" A+ d& S9 y1 d) M3 c( a
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
" L0 j Q+ P8 U+ C7 `baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.4 S* J/ T3 k* r- o+ ^

At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common1 N$ n6 n# F. @" Z- E2 {1 X
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and5 l% b# z& r3 ^& s- Y7 s
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.
+ K. G+ y0 Y& @2 P8 x# [8 \( O1 A5 O/ g) c4 S
Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
' ~+ z: p# e) R7 T+ n6 j; Bproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby+ ?- G8 J) a1 [4 P
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
, N( l! v& y; V$ |those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.' V, P' ]! m \) O& h }( H
+ O# v- m- U2 ~9 {" xFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,1 n$ e2 u6 s! v/ d9 l! G6 I
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.) v: z; I8 ~, A- f2 R$ p
0 Q) f0 r- L& l7 Q- m5 JThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done" u! N6 T) {: k0 r% l x6 D$ f
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she7 d0 G8 S" W4 ~4 J0 h' t
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
2 {, k7 Q6 R( \6 Otake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
$ W$ Y+ C U& Fare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show$ b) ^/ R G* A; x$ u3 y% k- N
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
$ }- O9 |$ V1 W/ P8 A& ?in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
+ O* L, Z$ W% k, I7 qdestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
( @$ ]# S! \, ?( s$ B. y1 E+ S0 Cand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
$ d' ^3 b; E. d' }Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific& Y+ R; K9 U( `( ]/ z! y( Q
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
