) g$ e2 v8 _$ L9 V! tam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,$ z$ u' P/ n5 Z' I
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and- e6 I! k* r& w9 b6 N1 X6 M0 Q$ y
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
( W8 S& L, R! kwill acquire language earlier and faster.0 \& _4 U1 ?$ |6 I! G

In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately5 Q) n: @+ J; |0 B% @1 w
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop3 u3 G- |6 p6 I& S+ I
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
5 K" @0 o9 z* e% Vsimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
. j0 [1 H; g; ^) \' P/ Vmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
7 M6 ~# [0 _; ?) `& t5 gbaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.

n$ f7 X: o2 K1 l P- W- _At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
# I6 }5 @( V2 Y9 b, a7 A1 |behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and; o8 t) E# P f
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
, [& I& [6 I5 j# Fproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby' F0 D- r Y3 N2 h, l- k# B+ \
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to, R2 a& |. l e3 b& Y- v0 H
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,3 g3 [4 k4 e, t% @
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects., t$ T' y$ s$ F+ H' j
9 C2 Q2 k% ~: H5 q& r% J: dThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
' p+ O8 |5 C/ sover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she% Y$ G& l* x) k' V
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
7 s' f$ Q" D' Q6 Rtake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate

are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show& m3 ?# U0 N' j4 d! [. j0 b
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used, V) D5 F6 X' f3 i1 P
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and" a5 B" R( w6 Q, u6 Y0 [! r5 b# f
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations, Z8 M5 K' w; ~- U6 E& @ X
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
: M/ F3 ], F4 RHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
9 O7 q5 I# a. \( y! o. Ijournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
