Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall
6 ]+ y7 N" ^- n0 }' [7 rnot do any of the following:
, h, @% D6 q) L9 B(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
* A7 B# l. \* fvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;2 M4 H$ n, N8 y" E3 u
(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor$ w3 p$ F* `. h4 S. r, N: E
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
1 ^8 K$ f+ M1 D(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,9 N, K3 n3 w1 L' t) D5 S' B% M
permit another person$ R0 n: g* ~$ A3 k! m
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or5 d) t# R \: {8 }# d4 f; X
(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,& R: |7 o5 T* W1 S: A7 w
unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;5 g( \4 L: o$ f7 X$ P: b( v
(d) give or lend a financial
B# Z7 {/ |+ D9 G1 xresponsibility card or a copy of it& A1 M: Z7 F, r. K5 ^ y0 {7 E
to a person not entitled to have that financial* _1 Y- L$ f( b* d6 @6 h0 ^
responsibility card or copy.

; C+ ?# _, T( n$ v- VIf a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
. {5 d& Y8 h* e1 y& _without the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of0 [6 ` a: ]5 {! _! ]: C* r
the vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection
% l# T& t- P% K; s% Q) a! h( p(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is# w" n- V/ v+ I) O8 f, S8 Y
not an insured motor vehicle.

) l- v1 N D" @8 w! EIf the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this: t. a/ M' Z+ e) X
Act, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this

! E2 K/ L9 `. n8 K3 R) dSubsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a4 w1 b [# X/ Q# R7 K. X9 U. L
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the
5 ^ i/ a: C. x0 [/ c, V' m2 Z8 e, fInsurance Act8 F8 L3 Q. U# p2 ~
by an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy* s, z# \) l( I2 E A9 {/ _; q
outside Alberta.
9 c3 c2 P! d. w(4)$ }4 l, _6 \ o7 a/ _ F- \
A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection
7 E! n* u# W/ y z$ Q(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
2 u+ b) F1 s. N5 s/ L8 P8 F(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500) h$ t4 F% ?, {0 i' s8 J+ o
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to2 e6 p) ?! B% h; f7 [( t. B) w
imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
: c* U, [0 P0 ~+ ~5 w+ Amore than 6 months

; i- X: R" Q: o% t- }* LMinimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
