Update on U of A provincial funding
" H# c; C. ^7 C% n0 X5 N5 m7 }" h0 C
As you will know from the budget speech, media reports, and government documents published late yesterday, Alberta’s post-secondary institutions have suffered the largest cuts to their budgets in more than a decade. This is a regressive decision, not only for our institution, but also for our students and the province as a whole.- C% o/ N0 Q# e9 Y+ ~8 G z
9 \5 C6 x* g% a1 t5 d+ S6 BWe have spoken to the Ministry of Enterprise and Advanced Education and can now report that the University of Alberta will receive $549,536,000 in operating funding for 2013-2014, which is a 7.2% reduction (an approximate $43 million cut) to base operating funding. This is a serious and significant loss in funding. We will not be able to avoid job losses or vertical cuts to services, units, and programs. We must face these very difficult decisions together.

; Z% w( R$ m% d9 H' FLet me repeat to you what I have said in media interviews: The government gave us no advanced indication that cuts would be this deep. We are a complex, multi-million dollar institution and we cannot be expected to turn on a dime. The ministry has extended the deadline to May 31 for the 2013 Comprehensive Institutional Plan, which includes the institutional budget for 2013-2014, but we will need more time to be able to make the best possible decisions going forward. I will continue to ask for the time we need.* D0 S, w. P) l) I& t6 w
. _0 M' S) f0 H7 R& xThe ministry has drafted mandate letters for each institution that should be delivered within the next few weeks. On April 12, the presidents of Campus Alberta Research Institutions (the CARIs) have been invited to a meeting to with government in which, I expect, we will hear more detail of governments’ expectations.

The coming days and weeks will test the mettle of our community. I will continue to fight for the resources we need and I will need your support as we move forward. I remained convinced that if we come together with the long-term vibrancy and excellence of the U of A as our shared goal, and if we are given the time to make thoughtful, strategic decisions, we will emerge from this period with our strengths intact. # I$ y; h) Q# p2 ~/ i2 U( L* T+ T
