Statistics Canada reported Wednesday that Alberta's population increased at twice the national average, while results of the 2011 federal census showed the Edmonton area's population grew at a faster rate than any other metro region in Canada from 2006 to 2011, with the exception of Calgary.

Edmonton alone added nearly 82,000 people in that time, bringing the population to 812,200. Originally, the city's chief economist John Rose thought Edmonton might see a slight slowdown from the impressive 9.6-per-cent growth it reported in the 2006 census. Instead, he said, strong job numbers in the past year helped push it to 11.2 per cent.6 F5 s2 m" b( @5 z. J/ ?9 X' @6 `
