Position Profile Heavy Duty Mechanics inspect, service, and maintain diesel locomotives in accordance with federal and company regulations.

They are also responsible for other important tasks, including:

Diagnosing diesel engine malfunctions and making indicated repairs
! q  `8 T  O, }/ OOperating machinery in a safe and effective manner
Providing daily locomotive maintenance that includes changing oil or repairing, replacing, cleaning and adjusting parts
Assembling and starting engines
5 w6 U, _# u- [/ y# PDiagnosing locomotive component malfunctions
+ g+ c- R1 e8 P  g/ ]# v/ _6 ]$ @3 @2 WPreparing inspection, work and maintenance reports
5 h0 ~# x0 d6 FPerforming other functions as assigned

Good eye-hand coordination
+ b8 S" z& a9 b% Y: ?- NFrequently lifting weights up to 50 pounds
Occasionally lifting weights up to 100 pounds
1 J& t- F1 m' CPhysical work, sometimes outdoors in extreme weather conditions
- M! \8 x3 |; ^8 ?( ?Regular exposure to dust, pollen, fumes, noise and vibrations
Working shifts, sometimes away from home

May need current, valid drivers license, CDL, and locomotive engineer certification
) Z6 L+ \" j1 ]  M, j2 OVisual acuity and hearing threshold tests are required for this position. Written pre-employment tests to become a Machinist Apprentice are required for this position. Completion of 3-year apprenticeship is required to become a Journeyman Machinist. This position is subject to night, weekend and holiday work hours when needed.
