Position Profile Heavy Duty Mechanics inspect, service, and maintain diesel locomotives in accordance with federal and company regulations.

They are also responsible for other important tasks, including:

Diagnosing diesel engine malfunctions and making indicated repairs
* Q/ w! t8 W# pOperating machinery in a safe and effective manner
Providing daily locomotive maintenance that includes changing oil or repairing, replacing, cleaning and adjusting parts
Assembling and starting engines
; t- y5 U6 s: l$ bDiagnosing locomotive component malfunctions
2 q9 j! @4 {6 w, e6 x; tPreparing inspection, work and maintenance reports
Performing other functions as assigned

Frequently lifting weights up to 50 pounds

2 P- S/ N! T' d9 iPhysical work, sometimes outdoors in extreme weather conditions
Regular exposure to dust, pollen, fumes, noise and vibrations
! l6 V2 m* a0 ?+ t' `9 [1 f% MWorking shifts, sometimes away from home
4 l3 p2 X2 Z# ~Basic technical knowledge of diesel
Welding skills
" t$ D: x' B& xUsing measuring devices and understanding visual displays
: H2 W2 N, R& O% L1 A) HMay need current, valid drivers license, CDL, and locomotive engineer certification
( {* o/ G- x6 f2 @Visual acuity and hearing threshold tests are required for this position. Written pre-employment tests to become a Machinist Apprentice are required for this position. Completion of 3-year apprenticeship is required to become a Journeyman Machinist. This position is subject to night, weekend and holiday work hours when needed.
