on the issues that matter. Prime Minister Harper and I have been clear
( S; o3 U) {6 E' W/ Z& zthat we cannot support imposing a UBB business model on wholesale Internet# l0 }/ [. Y- x4 M, a* {2 i
service providers.7 s7 B: |; S I' Z2 m
2 P, A" l) ^2 @8 j S/ D) aOur government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are$ H, e2 O z- f- c0 E! ~- s
an increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving% |4 s3 u! C5 Z& |/ }3 K. P
innovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops7 b1 \: K" t1 L2 {% _4 q: P
Canada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look
: t% e1 h* m; Z/ o5 qcarefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be, E) P+ D- `: m, i' }: d
guided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and
7 i$ b G6 j4 b; [; Binvestment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing& Q# h- L, W6 \9 u' [ [
market forces to prevail.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has
* y8 p6 f4 K7 I. W# j) ~chosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large
9 C: I. g3 D% t2 h/ L' Lnumber of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at

When the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the. B* t8 b2 E" K3 s- U7 M- j' w) M7 W
government will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in4 S s; \# ^3 X( [
line with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages
7 c8 D3 m8 N4 U: @" A. B5 Qcompetition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that
. \- L# p$ D/ x5 ] L/ c( e fany decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.# i- Q% o+ q/ A
