The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition
: {3 L0 ?( a2 `3 ]. QRoles and Functions
1 G) h, H: M: u; {# E4 xThe Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the
& ^+ N o# f2 \8 borganization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the
: d* Y" k: j7 eoperations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has, l0 c, b+ ?) q# N% B! X4 K
the important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,
+ v H; F2 ~$ k- soperational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular! I' h$ _% ^5 m) A+ D3 h# H
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is9 Y5 ^1 ?) x8 _: l
conducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an
' F( w3 J' v y! }+ Jemployee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires$ v; f2 y& u0 ?
staff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend, s* u, O1 ~# Y7 I& w) X8 x% v
all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.

Functions and responsibilities:- t3 ^. l e1 n7 u
The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:
) F! {3 q7 A! C i0 C) D/ X: i1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the6 Y2 [8 ^+ Z8 X# C
officers of the Coalition1 K6 T! T) ~/ l
2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural2 F& M3 Z( U4 a J6 i7 K
organizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations
; |/ w7 i% {& s; q1 Land public institutions6 _5 D; P' E8 F6 m
3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through
9 C- ^% ~6 u( [% N" efunding opportunities and maintaining initiatives9 J2 x8 ^ J+ p( f8 R+ `! j
4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community8 y& k9 p2 K- H" m' R
organizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with

5. Promotes transformative leadership among formal and informal community

6. Advances the community animation process as a bridging strategy for civic5 R: Q* y; a& F0 j
participation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society

with groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically+ l0 Z* P. t+ y5 |; T+ z$ y
diverse backgrounds/ u! i5 G* }' D8 m" D
/ q; V+ R# r0 W9 J, N" U) n, q! dAdministrative responsibilities: z2 U [& f7 q* D9 y {1 C
1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its. j5 A8 z9 r' w; ]4 U, h' F& u
regular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of
3 j0 c; ^( B! o1 G% y$ Fdirectors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the
8 A2 ~6 v1 W6 N Z5 S' z: Rmembers of the Coalition’s financial condition.
8 N& y$ U( m, A7 m% z: i) W T' x2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the

All operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to* q+ y5 u# _( N8 c2 C6 l4 t3 j
implement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating
1 q$ t' o1 @- W4 x: \9 D9 X/ koperations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
8 b/ ~, I) v/ M yThe Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and( k4 {! _& }1 V: ]0 @! G& {
aims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should
9 A7 c' V) z2 O* Nbe noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership
) b+ V; a( k) q6 z% Yparticipation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and6 b. |. I$ R! F7 j, N
facilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of
+ M& F1 M6 s# A. q6 {# pdirectors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial
- C* @) S, w) o* Hstatement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all- b3 A) e: z$ i/ ?! G
matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of
& b; G9 [8 n( |( odirectors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of
: f1 q `# u" J M/ _- z; [' Bpolicies already adopted9 a7 `9 ?$ O& n1 H* h& A( l4 F

community level
