The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition
$ C2 {. o* V) S' d+ y9 j# b, w2 `Roles and Functions
7 a& \; S$ s+ V$ GThe Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the
b# ?; E3 c& W: b; ]organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the7 | |/ Q3 A7 w) A3 [- s2 q; s
operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has
# J; y8 U! f' i/ a9 J2 j4 H* p- ]the important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,
& {' t2 P Q, b7 u r8 Y, g# ooperational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular
9 Q; I4 ]; q3 F6 v! Oboard meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is
: Y# v/ u7 d2 t4 H: w+ Wconducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an
' r; u$ B* B, v; M4 i! b0 Nemployee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires
+ Q/ f1 i$ [( G; A$ G! N2 `( kstaff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend. q& U! i- J$ y; D
all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.' T' E& v. E8 p, e, W& s# t1 b2 j4 x

The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:
% ]: a0 y& \" ], O3 f7 X1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the" A2 y6 X' V5 m
officers of the Coalition
_9 l* l1 G& `$ i9 p2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural
/ t6 z/ [1 C1 ?" ]1 M1 horganizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations
5 J) |! g) R* C# r1 [and public institutions5 R9 G0 ]3 E1 y6 R$ A; ]8 s) K. P% I
3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through
" m c+ g' U, A/ \funding opportunities and maintaining initiatives+ g; L6 p, c }+ G
4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community# a- a& p6 M( S8 o/ v# m; o, J1 H4 U
organizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with

1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its* Y+ ]( r4 b. q- J, O# i# \1 e
regular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of
; k7 {1 D* E1 u% Bdirectors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the7 L+ N: \4 z. E, H" l4 t6 z. V8 }
members of the Coalition’s financial condition.1 |( c2 V2 z% q0 h2 e% }
2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the4 G. j" `/ r7 ?- L" c3 \

. Z6 [3 p) a/ F1 qAll operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to
% A& O; O3 l2 V( y7 M: c5 vimplement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating' H9 Y8 M+ {& t& h+ `# _7 h
operations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.9 z) B$ {) m3 o
The Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and
( W B0 g$ q: e5 T5 {, saims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should2 j6 Y" L+ u3 x2 G
be noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership
. Q# N# R7 B. U: lparticipation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and# g/ ~* i! w3 u/ y4 C
facilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of
. A& Y" A' C; @+ ^9 y+ Idirectors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial
; V+ {) D4 F) V! H, W) |: wstatement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all
" L7 N" p1 w5 N N/ [' m$ Wmatters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of4 Q8 {( a& r( u( F
directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of3 w4 @8 K! k; X( @$ D2 l
policies already adopted

1. Intercultural sensitivity, flexibility and an understanding or appreciation
