3 c1 N# x" ?# @" R8 u( | The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 8 F, U9 m; r/ a8 G* B
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
/ _8 S- ]; V6 Y1 pin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
- S" @# {) e7 R# f# Nexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
- q: o, ~4 Q* Z+ M3 @their church, it was very run down and needed 6 |6 g- O0 d9 l; _
much work. They set a goal to have everything - ?& |$ A! ]; p/ q% H! p: ?0 y
done in time to have their first service
7 ]% O) x# G) `: L9 Qon Christmas Eve.
* A) K+ p+ o4 I; \" N& q% FT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
% }; v, S) P: a. z# ]+ opainting, etc, and on December 18 : u# G2 Y& |4 l2 Y/ f( p P
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. Y- v1 x6 u$ P# B( y1 r1 s$ H- x
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
( a/ L' K' Y0 l" J& c! Z% b' orainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
1 m9 @ u7 _* Q O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.1 L9 G/ ]2 f" t2 ^2 l9 N) e( ^
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
% C. K* w4 a/ U9 Gleaked, causing a large area of plaster about
" l. o5 X# j6 M- x0 q20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall " c$ g3 }0 h6 [+ i* f
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, : B% t/ Q9 O& s" Q5 H! {
beginning about head high.
* g& ~6 m* \1 FT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
2 |0 }* B2 U& x9 n0 `' gand not knowing what else to do but postpone 8 e @' F' c* t1 J; T0 N
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
( A9 {$ \" z4 u: b9 B( nOn the way he noticed that a local business was
' g$ A- \( d. K+ U" V) Nhaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he 7 y! I2 z& z; @6 ?
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, ; z; X( V, k& V& S/ y0 ^
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth : G4 {' k( Y3 [' x, J9 ^; f' k3 I# \
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
6 D$ W! h1 H% [5 membroidered right in the center. It was just
( q: J7 X$ r4 [* ~, j9 K
( j9 R/ }) ?. l! u2 x/ O) N5 A5 @5 o$ h' V6 |0 a) S
* c: e7 i* k+ W2 N" f" Y' c+ Q# W
) c: t& d1 m' H( c
% Y4 Z5 _- u/ K6 I1 V
, H0 e+ Q. [+ O" \1 F# G/ Q8 vthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
3 m9 h! P( V m7 F; o. w) dB y this time it had started to snow. An older
% A f* y' w0 f' }# h: K. pwoman running from the opposite direction was ( u- k* s) @4 H/ ~
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor ! n4 \9 h' w2 _- y: L, B2 a2 A: [
invited her to wait in the warm church for
0 m3 @3 k# P2 H, R) c* Y ~5 j2 Bthe next bus 45 minutes later. 6 h' }1 k0 P5 V! l2 b' N
/ f% _ m9 B" J! @ B+ NShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
t _: I5 Q8 s- c) w1 Zwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
1 g7 w9 e& m& Y: C/ Z8 o1 Sup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
: _3 ?9 V/ x* J1 R* Vcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
; m, p+ l2 ~7 W" p+ C$ g' YT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center6 o+ p& s S( t9 w6 }0 F+ r
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"& j3 g, B' [% T4 S8 q b
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" ' k7 N2 Y! J6 G) y( F) E
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
- m/ ], W: h9 ]6 l. nthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
( d8 r. Y8 p& ?) s2 l0 [ ?* _it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had ' f1 b; S2 |- Y* d' Q, [9 N
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . ( x2 D- ~+ a% d
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor 0 b$ I8 t; }) g( o; H, q
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
, c `: P1 \+ Twoman explained that before the war she and
4 D! R6 n2 V5 C. N( Zher husband were well-to-do people in Austria . 3 S9 l1 _- `% e: d6 U8 b
5 H& Z+ a9 N0 n6 G6 b. x- h7 N5 N
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
7 n6 t) [8 f1 i: \8 B7 DHer husband was going to follow her the next week. / b1 W: _7 a( U7 U ~
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her ! Q, m7 Q$ Y3 d$ G# [7 J: }8 A4 v
husband or her home again. " ?1 B" K) F: `, A4 x" U
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;; W( x0 f* E- F( v
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.2 B* o* T% I2 h" D+ F! H$ [
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That% W: n1 a1 R& J8 u [- E
was the least he could do. She lived on the other3 y! V6 V3 Z" n# j$ l
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn 1 V5 d0 R4 f: d& C( q# B8 C
for the day for a housecleaning job.3 F; h1 L( @3 _0 ]
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas 6 Y, m* m5 x2 n: V
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the # f& W" t8 n0 z9 ^/ h/ {5 D7 `
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
3 o1 }( q) @( Spastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door ' s/ P" C* v; A
and many said that they would return..
# `+ Y5 C& _4 Y) L. }; N' n& E) QOne older man, whom the pastor recognized ' j, G) c( t4 L# m ?
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
, B2 }1 u; G3 w$ v% _# R6 B1 jpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he ; o; [7 F4 V. s. k$ J8 \
wasn't leaving. # E; i8 U; n# o4 }, S# ?" K7 x e
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 9 H4 t/ R& U& C2 ~
the front wall because it was identical to one 2 d, b6 Q1 ?& H$ a: Q, z# r6 j( g
that his wife had made years ago when
5 q+ r1 z" Z" j# {% j2 d' h( G; Y7 kthey lived in Austria before the war and how
! C) L) n( d5 I4 o, f) q- R1 ocould there be two tablecloths so much alike? $ @9 a$ d9 B. X3 \
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he 4 V8 n5 x- f7 l/ f) B
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was - S3 ] G: l! K9 K
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and9 ^) N2 }1 |5 z5 H% c: h- U
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home6 A* x* P0 T; j4 w, d2 V0 n5 ]& D/ ~
again all the 35 years between. ' |4 c- l" {; F. l8 X
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to & k7 k, K6 W. |
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
2 l% {1 f9 T' h3 _0 q0 BIsland and to the same house where the pastor
2 U; w ~$ H' k' u' \) K' Bhad taken the woman three days earlier.
" ]' t( b' ~( t9 U" _2 QHe helped the man climb the three flights of, U- b9 T; C3 P
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
0 b" x7 Q; h, Z1 N' Z2 ]# f9 Mthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas 2 }" Q, U# K+ e$ Q V0 w/ U
reunion he could ever imagine.
