 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned ( h& B: R2 Y8 m) S- r4 u
to their first ministry, to reopen a church 8 C' R! F( @: M* }) L+ B! C5 i
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
x& L- C! B7 o* uexcited about their opportunities. When they saw 5 B4 ?" e7 s! f9 `9 o
their church, it was very run down and needed $ p7 V% |, q4 H# g0 y: s
much work. They set a goal to have everything
+ W+ P' `4 n0 E* R" O# O3 y1 Zdone in time to have their first service ) m' d" E4 N( R7 |0 n) D
on Christmas Eve.
5 {6 Z8 l7 X, J1 e* d! i# JT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
# w2 o) \ F) D, H% \- zpainting, etc, and on December 18 ) b9 Y" v" L6 I+ F. W1 w4 U' W
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. % a7 z- B! _. @' w! x
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving " l6 o% Y5 U$ Y
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
& R* a0 O: t8 z- o4 `5 Y O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.) p3 a4 {6 B1 o; [! o( X* y
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had# \8 j, `6 G+ t5 |
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about " J) ~! U& J. F$ U1 ~! W8 u& Z
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall * l# R+ h1 W# v8 f$ Q
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
4 Q6 P1 i3 D5 j* Z# s: Kbeginning about head high.
( x9 h+ q( b. Y0 wT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
* @. e( O7 m( U& iand not knowing what else to do but postpone
' ^1 u6 `$ g3 f8 q e" i8 N) z, Jthe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
: P+ _3 J- y( A) Z9 P6 LOn the way he noticed that a local business was
! C/ R3 `% m) }having a flea market type sale for charity, so he 8 }5 a; u4 x! ]6 w8 B/ i
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, 8 X8 |+ s% r" n( T; U5 m/ _# |
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth 8 _& k* w [( c4 E+ l3 d
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross . K; @2 P- I4 |) a* P+ z' v" @. Z
embroidered right in the center. It was just
]4 k1 n: R$ ^5 {( x. N0 x
' E' x; \0 |8 }2 F' _) M8 |8 z* H; F- H
7 u" i. E$ M3 G! M* W
" o* c# _$ G4 d5 `: n7 m 9 b" C7 v2 [ {9 X; i
7 t* X0 D$ b+ E9 D/ V6 l
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
/ g' b4 j, ~# g% X$ ~6 g8 C! pB y this time it had started to snow. An older 3 Z; O6 \+ Y) L; p
woman running from the opposite direction was
6 Z. z/ ~$ Z, A& Ptrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
9 b _' r0 i, z9 finvited her to wait in the warm church for . }, Y# f5 f9 ?' ~0 v- F* o _# ~8 g
the next bus 45 minutes later. & {$ u$ ^- U9 M( `( O. B6 y: g6 x
# L" p, d) V+ z. f* u& D
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
! S( E$ t+ G# u" Z7 iwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
/ t2 B! P! |2 jup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor 4 ~* g1 B( g' W
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
6 z/ ^6 Z8 C; c. O X* DT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
2 }+ `4 U& L: m- ?$ Naisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
1 \1 E9 E+ i/ T6 j. E) G3 n% eshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
+ f; \( O9 V1 ^0 ]0 A: aThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check+ ?0 ?4 U ?+ v7 o* l9 }
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into; D& X5 a8 M) V/ e3 b2 ^
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
4 V1 ~) W4 Y* N, c' ^) kmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
9 w4 F0 L1 e8 ?2 d/ r5 bT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
i' f# _# @4 _. R6 u6 ctold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
' a) U8 _- Y% e, c$ }woman explained that before the war she and
. U" b' Y( p: @' x$ w# L2 w# h" |her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . $ J# d( K( E! x7 E) a$ x' V
, k$ d/ v* H8 u* a2 V; q6 {When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
2 ~# m& I& ^' J4 Q! }7 `, SHer husband was going to follow her the next week. # S+ B- o$ E5 @$ @2 ]% K
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
" Q- ~' Q3 d2 _2 ^8 F3 bhusband or her home again.
0 q. C* V1 G% @4 f8 RT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
4 g$ \& M* G5 v) Gbut she made the pastor keep it for the church./ P* c& m6 z5 D3 u9 ?
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
! h: r, T. N6 p: I* B: Rwas the least he could do. She lived on the other
. h5 e k, ^! Z. gside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn 8 U* N5 a) h; x V W+ I" \* k: a( x4 Y
for the day for a housecleaning job.
: Z( |$ o+ B, z; _6 vW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
! _0 J; T* Z6 l+ e/ e+ o9 R5 i0 ?Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
% _. U2 i! i q# d5 `- T; X" A* c" ?spirit were great. At the end of the service, the 5 o8 P( `# F( j; L5 U! ^, F
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
$ b5 N( J' u7 w6 T5 {8 eand many said that they would return.. 4 R7 [3 N" ~, ]* j" N; c& f
One older man, whom the pastor recognized : N# U, R& B0 m& y2 n1 |# y# J* Y
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
I' I) j' A# J* spews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
# [5 L/ Y6 e% E% t+ swasn't leaving.
9 X' z5 e# @+ k% t, @; ?) _0 U4 IThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
& M- ~9 p, K/ ?5 uthe front wall because it was identical to one * z; U# J; j; p9 Q4 N
that his wife had made years ago when
* w0 E, g% m; c8 w0 tthey lived in Austria before the war and how ! [9 i) ]: M" H, \ G8 X; ^# j
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? ) c8 k6 L! ~, t4 U0 q; C
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he . k$ w/ }5 }, ?, v& l
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
, D5 p, o9 n* d7 b* R; Zsupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and7 z5 o3 l4 P4 \+ y0 H3 o p! i4 y
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home9 I9 f: T5 ^& ~+ f! a: f& {
again all the 35 years between. * X% Y. }8 ]7 s
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
/ o S! K. F! R: _' ?7 Ctake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
: J* Z5 u/ D( ~- W1 J* d6 ?) jIsland and to the same house where the pastor
1 l) p4 L! m9 Chad taken the woman three days earlier.
. p) M- x3 t, Q7 }+ i) H4 xHe helped the man climb the three flights of
3 _# b) N( X) ]0 X$ B2 Rstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on+ S% f1 n8 h1 G
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
9 ?; S/ j; Q7 N, F, kreunion he could ever imagine.

cares we know He will see us through.
