The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 6 M e! s" c- v! A
to their first ministry, to reopen a church 5 j& T( c, n. ]7 h
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October ( U# [2 Z; ?! @$ N; Y' X3 k" c! m
excited about their opportunities. When they saw 7 `0 x. t7 \7 W% U" x. T5 p
their church, it was very run down and needed ) V/ G8 K; e7 i5 p& e; y# m. ]* t
much work. They set a goal to have everything
) _; s- `) D9 |$ c9 Bdone in time to have their first service ) X- l8 ]4 r# D& p, o3 D2 e
on Christmas Eve.
7 l! K. o3 u i& r* D: ~+ HT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,5 d+ ?4 T: o" I/ E- \) O
painting, etc, and on December 18 $ @$ \2 R# X8 ~* Q. M
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
( ]9 n% W7 F! C& D4 r- ^O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
* O% |5 i: X$ P) Drainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. ) `: Z( {! d0 I- F
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
8 I0 p1 J$ ?( B. s7 i- Z1 F/ N ~His heart sank when he saw that the roof had1 h! }/ T# r' t0 O
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
: [, {2 @, g6 D20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
$ h" m& D* x0 [of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
+ g5 X; H* ^5 a9 tbeginning about head high. ! a P0 w! _9 Z/ z, K- n
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, 4 r0 k1 O: P5 Z$ I7 P
and not knowing what else to do but postpone
0 p o4 F8 F( U' G) t" Y4 @, xthe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
2 e7 `% m, `$ ?On the way he noticed that a local business was
* E% c3 t6 o" u8 ]+ o5 W. Phaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he : B0 E# `' G1 o- P) a0 ]1 U
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, - Y* J# x3 b3 U. ? F
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
8 u( K& |$ M, s4 h8 F8 p" qwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 2 \% U3 Q# E3 `6 o7 m
embroidered right in the center. It was just

& o3 n1 R( r1 I: M. [# a+ G* ^1 t6 m! y
8 J% O# V/ M' H# ?
) ~. ~+ X& O% t8 e. [ . ^8 j1 A! y$ U% m
# M7 c/ ]/ \7 ^ K% Q! Athe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. ) R7 s! ?8 o! I) m1 J% s7 W
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
4 F/ _' v& V/ p2 twoman running from the opposite direction was ) f0 i& u. U/ M ~" F. _2 ?
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
2 e- D/ G1 T4 q( I1 binvited her to wait in the warm church for
" M4 j0 F$ M2 |5 A% N. K5 `9 N) Lthe next bus 45 minutes later.

, [; b, r- [( @. t! g: t! PShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor ) f: X0 H7 L7 c# I2 @; C! p* d- i2 t
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put / k4 O; B, p* }& n9 i
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
- h4 R$ I, Q4 bcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
$ e3 j& W8 L: C$ NT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
0 J( N1 f3 ]6 ^ z* f, kaisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
4 v6 m8 {: c6 g8 lshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" : [- P# A# ~$ q, Y+ d# R: f0 k. p
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check- k7 H* u0 v& u: c, a" r' D3 r
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
& x" D. | y' L# S; J4 Z' \/ P9 mit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had 3 a- T% `! n, p6 j
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . 5 X8 Y$ R$ i# P2 v& X4 J* H5 u
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor + w, }* k; l3 ~3 v# o- |
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The 0 U; P; R" L9 `3 x$ `
woman explained that before the war she and : E8 k0 ]) N2 Y5 n8 y
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
1 m. i* g% f$ ]+ G4 B8 T: P; A5 |" h6 O* R4 E$ Z4 D6 Z5 U! d# ?
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. / q Z7 V- b- \$ W2 O W) |
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. 2 U5 e T1 t- r ]' z" H: p
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her 4 f* e" W6 S! e4 X- g5 H3 c
husband or her home again. a3 A- J+ t: w6 Y) ~0 S
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;& [- ?! t+ P- |) y" {
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.) e+ i& r! l& k% T
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That5 A" ]# H& _& a! _, `$ A0 n
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
0 \8 p5 V- G& q; r! Qside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
, n8 r% b, e$ n) w' l2 Bfor the day for a housecleaning job.
5 L4 ~% r* E6 G" r1 \W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
3 G3 r$ _! E" @) k9 n* c4 z* U+ REve. The church was almost full. The music and the + Q2 o! S9 B. m& u' z) Z
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
$ |% f- w, k2 f" d$ ipastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door # h( _5 S6 {5 u6 n) |2 D/ m. v
and many said that they would return..
* U9 T' {% Y H; jOne older man, whom the pastor recognized
% b5 m( R4 m# ofrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the 5 q) q0 q% g. }3 S N5 [2 X B
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
! j7 c2 J* ?/ j' ~& O& Dwasn't leaving. ' ?& ^) c. Z# \
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
1 O$ i, B8 c5 qthe front wall because it was identical to one . e/ }8 C& T, E+ T# q% I* N) v
that his wife had made years ago when % h* i' ?. ]) t" w
they lived in Austria before the war and how
" H. G( R. A* l7 f; I7 u( zcould there be two tablecloths so much alike?
% p) e. ]$ T, C# D( u/ N7 UH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
- X4 X+ h3 Q6 S T' |9 b% D2 E0 \! Wforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was ' ~9 l7 h) b/ Q8 Y) I% S' J, H' S1 k
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
% U' T. a. U* Q% fput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home" y2 Z1 P9 }0 O2 p; R
again all the 35 years between. 1 ~$ O. p4 G( h% w) E7 v
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to / O( n2 \' Y6 M2 _3 v
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten 7 ]1 A0 h4 s* B3 J4 l2 f. c
Island and to the same house where the pastor 7 [ p9 x' T7 j. d' G. ^. u; r
had taken the woman three days earlier.
# Z% h: l6 q. p0 v) C q# ^He helped the man climb the three flights of
, v2 J9 z4 s/ O7 B* _( tstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
' T( p# t* |; Xthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas ! G8 B7 _! ]/ P# t; e
reunion he could ever imagine.
