Edmonton's population grows by 30,0008 @: ~7 h0 X4 R& I+ @8 X

EDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning./ u4 H: }# v9 a; F2 b
"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.
) P5 t3 N; I$ a2 F1 }* [The population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.' g. Q" k W4 t7 { N
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.
. @4 s9 C* c$ B( p7 }" l7 Y2 g# P"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said.
* K! W9 A g. b8 yEdmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.
( B, I& Q* V, cThis year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
