# ?! ^2 @4 l: h! H; J. B ^+ uEDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.: C9 d/ s( z- W1 \8 {0 |8 x
"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.
- O8 G$ b' [" P7 I' i' zThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.

, G# @9 O1 n5 D) ]3 ^"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said. , b* |: d5 T }' X
Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that./ C" Z2 o) l) {& h1 E
This year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
