There are no changes in the way Albertans register for publicly-funded health care. However, as announced in the 2008 budget, health premiums have been eliminated as of January 1, 2009.

+ j, O: l, V& W! q% T3 o3 wPayment and collection of health care premiums owed prior to January 1, 2009 will continue under these guidelines:

~/ ]9 k& c5 b) B, y 1. All Albertans are responsible to pay premiums unless they qualify for premium assistance, government-sponsored income support programs, or are senior citizens.1 k- A0 K& k8 \6 O7 `4 {$ U
2. Employers and benefit administrators who register and pay premiums on behalf of their employees will continue to do so.
; Z; @1 ~: J' }$ C 3. Alberta Health and Wellness will continue to pursue collections from those who fail to pay premiums.
/ D$ ^7 c; J6 ]1 ] 4. Contributors to Alberta Blue Cross or other supplementary insurance plans that provide prescription drug, dental, and other extended coverage, will still pay those premiums, as they have not been eliminated.# f2 g! H0 p, n6 M, _+ {# B
5. New Albertans must register for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan within three months of their arrival. |
