1 k- m2 J" S# |( G# v+ WEDMONTON - Prices for new homes in Edmonton fell 5.3 per cent in July compared to the same month last year, marking the biggest year-over-year drop in 23 years, said Statistics Canada today.

2 `, R% w! W5 B3 o/ ^; kEdmonton's cooling market showed the biggest year-over-year drop of any Canadian city.

& i5 T( l; i# \# F [Compared to June, Edmonton new home prices nudged downward 0.2 per cent.

+ D$ ~4 \$ u- i ~Calgary saw a 0.3 per cent slide compared to July of last year.

6 \' Y4 D; n6 j# K- e7 fEven heated Saskatoon posted a slower annual increase of 13.1 per cent, "further confirmation of a trend of deceleration in this city. Many builders reported increased prices as a result of higher material and labour costs," the agency said.

0 c& }- p, j8 K4 {7 {! mThe fastest pace was in Regina, which saw a year-over-year price increase of 29.6 per cent, down from its record rise of 34 per cent in April.6 `9 I) Q1 j3 K+ M+ L
) h% [ l, A6 Y) y$ eAs the market continued to cool in Western Canada, prices for new homes rose nationally at a slower pace in July for the sixth consecutive month.

Prices were up 2.7 per cent in July from a year earlier, down from June's annual pace of 3.5 per cent. On a monthly basis, prices edged up 0.1 per cent between June and July.
