International student Shaoping Shi, from Longkou in Yantai City,
, i1 ?- F* d" Y5 E, |China, is a proud graduate from the Accounting and Strategic; S% S6 a* r8 T5 H5 w# T- i
Measurement program. Her hard work has paid off; in July 2008 she
3 x8 V# F: e" h3 b+ Y$ I: raccepted a position in the MacEwan Financial Services department.
9 c# c2 W0 d- f2 UIt is an outcome she could never have predicted in 2003 when she5 @5 a: k( ]( Y% u0 e& `) @
came to Grant MacEwan as an exchange student from Heze Medical
# N! ]9 h$ Q1 H0 Z! c7 gCollege to continue her nursing studies. She came as a top student- M1 s! t7 r v5 v6 R& B+ s
and vice-president of her student activities association, but when she O% m5 D3 r X4 p' k" o2 v
got here, everything changed. Two years later she found herself struggling,$ Z D" L( L W7 G1 N; H2 I
barely keeping up with her program and on the verge of commencing
7 G& M+ k7 ^2 r oher clinical practicum. “I asked myself, ‘What’s my goal? Do/ o9 r' ?8 B2 h$ c7 @3 R9 |
I want to stay in nursing my whole life?”1 e! k9 C+ _$ @: V* S0 K$ ~
She turned to Katherine Hildebrand at the Student Resource" x p: m" N3 I! f* G/ {6 ^; ^
Centre. “I noticed that Katherine was a good friend to many, and as
% K& U8 h4 h4 K6 M7 k2 Han international student I have learned that you have to speak out,3 T. N- n/ C d' {7 ~
talk to someone. You cannot be struggling by yourself. Even if you
, N3 ]3 B, [! e/ u5 c# efind a way forward, it’s going to take you so long. They are going to
) \# R, C* M! ]+ Y0 jgive you the help that you need.”! w$ j9 I+ d) q* V' K5 v
“Katherine asked me, ‘What are you interested in?’” I was interested1 [' O& h |6 q4 s: C+ i' M: R
in numbers, so I tried a few basic accounting courses, and I did really
h2 M8 k+ {/ f0 Qwell. I got As, and I was so satisfied. Then Katherine helped me apply( a) s, |' R u1 j( ^5 |
to the program.” That, however, was just the beginning of a long haul.
/ Z- W" P' O- E8 X2 t“It was a really, really big challenge. It was a good thing I was in the
: i2 t7 n" r9 u5 hco-op program. I was able to practice and get paid. It really helped
0 I' e% ]) q$ _4 fout.” Shaoping believes that nothing is impossible. “My favourite' x8 K7 T0 {: c7 ^+ w3 o- `
feeling is enjoying a small success after working hard on a challenge.”
& ^' V4 L g( ]* N0 ?Throughout this period Shaoping relied on a large circle of friends
: P4 |' Y- v& Z% pand staff at Grant MacEwan, and high among them, Katherine.$ ?! Z2 T' b4 }5 L- J c# r' L
“Katherine is like one of my parents. I trust her and could tell her- G! e( q# ^( [ ]; g* W
anything from my heart. She always has my best interests in mind.”4 C- x9 @$ V+ w; Y
With such support and a new job, she has decided to stay in
: D( G; y! L7 q$ v7 ^8 ^Edmonton for now, “I feel Grant MacEwan is my home here.” With
\! f0 x; h0 ]' d' D+ zdiploma in hand, Shaoping is looking forward to a trip back to China' g. R1 l4 D) W5 _1 B) v' U+ M4 q
in February 2009 for Chinese New Year. |
