Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

" u) O& I7 ~; ]/ A! JYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties % B' d( f; w7 c$ h: s- q! A, d! {, Q
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
% \+ _/ z0 [- Unews to report from that meeting.7 k& s* g4 |1 ~6 G$ ~5 r

First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current 5 w( G, V7 q* y. C
undergraduate international students from the increase to the & C$ T+ @. G8 z
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international . A0 y. n# X% i' `2 {
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base 3 T7 D$ W+ p0 s; @% Q
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). 1 h1 d' w( f2 a" d0 a6 ?
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase : R% I8 k- N i- r A& x* R
the differential for international graduate students.
- A' U9 H1 L/ i3 J" g4 M% J; F/ K
n9 X) k) e7 e! P' DNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
+ V- i: w$ X! {" s6 }3 kincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to 6 B8 N& a7 E" m1 e# m& P
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
1 l6 T& ~3 w5 b7 F( Z) t ?will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At 4 X3 y2 \1 J( V g7 p: i7 d& T: p2 X
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in 5 x w# T; W0 t- i4 }8 A8 C
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
% J3 X' W' v6 p) i8 F! Tincreases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the ; X' |8 w7 P' m, m0 `* {; I
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I

% f: e4 |; }2 O( o7 ?9 R. Dhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 5 \6 m7 w5 s1 H/ a9 U+ I
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your 0 G- i6 @& }( m$ N7 Z8 T
