6 m* y* Z* p" HGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Dear International Undergraduate Students,
# ^6 G% q- j- n& h! I
9 ^  |( U# @  u0 {8 J+ x, `Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
news to report from that meeting.

# ^2 P# u. a& I5 H+ F3 g) y2 TFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
% `' V$ F% H5 M4 t2 wundergraduate international students from the increase to the
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
, f2 N6 j3 l% mstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
% r0 Q2 N1 o( S  I" M9 t  _0 L& [% }tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
the differential for international graduate students.

Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
# {0 a" {) P( W/ H) sincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
6 D: }( a# A; `1 n& C# ~will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
increases once they are here.
" P3 h& P" L8 h$ T7 K0 f
/ T1 M: [/ }# f" QThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
+ Q+ F# t  C$ D  ]; T) q- q& C3 F: p$ f7 ^international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
- L1 J1 t$ R9 X9 o% Ihave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
0 q# m9 _7 O7 U4 h) D- ]increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
help. Thank you.
