6 m* y* Z* p" HGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. - C6 V+ x) t( y4 k

9 ^ |( U# @ u0 {8 J+ x, `Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties " {- [( V3 ~& e" ~) L
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad $ J: [+ F0 O5 G: k
news to report from that meeting.7 V5 m: ~. {& F* \
# ^2 P# u. a& I5 H+ F3 g) y2 TFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
% `' V$ F% H5 M4 t2 wundergraduate international students from the increase to the + E% P/ S; o6 ~8 D
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
, f2 N6 j3 l% mstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
% r0 Q2 N1 o( S I" M9 t _0 L& [% }tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). 1 a# b# c- N! s& O! o: Q
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase ) c+ |! ]) Y- n5 H6 j
the differential for international graduate students.' r9 `9 G3 B2 I
3 h. ?7 w4 Q9 `7 z
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
# {0 a" {) P( W/ H) sincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to 2 Y: b3 I: b! Y3 T
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
6 D: }( a# A; `1 n& C# ~will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At 5 N" ^; T# q: n2 [6 V' _
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in 9 a. X& }$ P. N- Z3 o$ \
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected v4 H! O' n: v5 c M
increases once they are here.

/ T1 M: [/ }# f" QThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
+ Q+ F# t C$ D ]; T) q- q& C3 F: p$ f7 ^international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I # x& x: Y' C! S) C0 }. C0 o! i
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
