Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Dear International Undergraduate Students,

# z" ]2 g! W0 eYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
news to report from that meeting.
* T  Q- U, k: f" D7 S$ X
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
, D$ g7 w* C# x+ `$ U8 S: m  hstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
8 l! ~: L" D# T. P' vAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
the differential for international graduate students.
+ ^* \0 F9 B  U) I; k% G$ Z* I
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
2 m+ x5 S7 h  u4 K# O: |6 |+ ~increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
. d  Q/ v- u" H+ o8 mwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
& [% J1 g4 }( _  h1 P! `) c; Gleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
) F2 ]% p! V, Z' ~) g( `tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
9 y3 N5 c2 Z. _) n* Fincreases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
. B5 g% B, |; k  m. i8 tinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
0 D+ J" @, ?6 i2 S  X9 Rincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
help. Thank you.
