! D4 Y: s. ~0 }/ Y/ m$ D3 M  T+ HGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
( L$ w2 i( i9 SCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
, _% Q" i' n# Inews to report from that meeting.
. N# A  [9 u5 N1 j
2 c, r, m7 i  m4 R$ y( g1 V. |First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
6 a# C8 u0 m0 Zstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
2 J: `9 X0 l/ E% M9 \tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
5 n; J/ L2 |) s8 M" v6 a; k- y. Qthe differential for international graduate students.

Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
0 {& Y2 m, z% l2 }% [$ ]: q- jwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
9 D) G5 _1 v, s8 mincreases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
- z" c) s: {+ a( A1 @& \0 Dinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
# S0 q' O! r& k+ ?4 R; pwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
, E1 R. U" v; }" M  jincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
help. Thank you.
